Determine If Authenticated User Can Access Page Or Directory?
Oct 27, 2010
I need to check if an authenticated user is authorized to access a directory. I have done this before with a base class library method, I just cannot remember what class it's part of or what it's name was. I think the method was a static method and the class may have had the word Utility in it's name, but I just can't remember or find it on the net. BUT I KNOW I HAVE USED IT! The method definition was something like:
bool SomeTypeWithTheWordUtilityInTheNamePossibly.VerifyUserIsAuthorized(Principal user, string virtualPath)
I'm not using a roles provider in this application and I'm not planning to.

I've a default.aspx page in my application's root folder. I added a a page in the root of inetpub that redirects requests to the default page. The idea is that the user need only enter the server name to get to the default page. How can I set things up so that all users have access to the default.aspx and that they only have access to the other pages once they've been authenticated?
I am using Windows Integrated Security and the users are being challenged and authenticated properly. I want them to be able to access Default.aspx without any challenges.
(On a side note which may answer this question, when using WIS does the user *allows* have to be challenged? Isn't it possible to pass through their Windows User and ID without the prompt?)

I have Membership, Profile and Role providers setup for my .NET MVC website. I would like to say: this Role has access to that Page. How do I 'inject' this code to the RoleProvider? Or do I have to override it somehow? Any leads?(Roles are stored in the default ASP.NET SqlRoleProvider, Pages are stored in a seperate SQL database).

We have a SSO solution with ADFS for logging into our web app, we also have standard setup that uses authentication with our database. I want to setup a solution that allows for both. So now I am trying to figure out, is there any way for ASP.NET to detect if a user is authenticated with Active Directory so I could do this on the fly? If user is logged in through AD, send through ADFS, else, show login screen. I also realize that this may not work if they are setup to use forms based authentication only after the ADFS process is started.

I have created a website which has Secure folder in which i have got a form which only "admin role" users can see. Now that form will appear if login is successful and it works great, if password or username is wrong then again the loginForm will appear which works great too.
Now the problem is if the users which are not in "admin role" enter the user name and password correctly, instead of coming back to the login page and showing them the "Not Authenticated" message, it gives me an error that myWebsite/login.aspx is not found. I think this is because the name for my login page is "AdminLoginPage.aspx" and which is not found and hence it shows me the error. I dont know where to change the login Page name to "AdminLoginPage.aspx"

<asp:HyperLink
ID="hyper1"
runat="server"
NavigateUrl='<%#string.Format("~/PLayer.aspx?ID={0}&Type={1}",Eval("arrange_by_id"),Eval("value"))%>'><%# Eval("value")%></asp:HyperLink>
I've implemented this string format in my NavigateUrl to pass a dynamic querystring depending on the clicked item!
but you see the first part in the string format where it says "~/PLayer.aspx" i want the user control to automatically change this part according to where it's placed!

Im working on a website where users can log into a members area, inside this area they will be able to communicate with other members.
In order to keep an accurate list of who is online and who is not, I would need to update a IsOnline field in my database when they log on and when they exit my website..
The login part is easy, but how can I determine if someone is leaving my website to go to another, or closing the browser.

I have a web app that uses AD to authenticate the user which works great. But i received a request where a user that is outside of the Ad needs access to the application.

In C#, how do i access Active Directory to get the list of groups that a certain user belongs to?
The user details are in the form:
"MYDOMAINmyuser"
I've been following the instructions from here but they only work if i have the user details in the form:
"LDAP://sample.com/CN=MySurname MyFirstname,OU=General,OU=Accounts,DC=sample,DC=com"
So maybe what i'm asking is, how to get from the first, shorter, form to the fully qualified form below?

the Web Part for anonymous user and authenticated user is displayed differently. I faced this problem twise. First time when used Silverlight control in the Web Part and second time when used devexpress control in the Web Part. In both cases problem was with displaying for anonymous user. Silverlight control didn't display. Devexpress control lost it's styles. Both controls had properties that pointed to files. Silverlight control property pointed to the XAP file, and Devexpress control property pointed to the CSS file. It seems to me, that for anonymous user the Web Part cannot find this path or doesn't allow to link to other files.

I have a shared folder with directories on a remote server that I am trying to access with the method System.IO.Directory.GetDirectories(). This folder is based off of the credentials gotten from windows authentication. My problem is that everything works fun when I debug the Web Application in the built in IIS in VS, but when I set it up in IIS V5.1, it tells me that I have an invalid username and password. I am using Visual Studio 2005 on a Microsoft XP SP2 machine.

I am using form authentication in my website. I have a scenario wherein the user is authenticated but the session has timed out. So, i would like to initialize some session variables in Session_Start of Global.asax (First i check if Request.IsAuthenticated=True). For that i required the name of the user who authenticated. On .aspx pages we can get it using Page.User.Identity.Name but how to get it in global.asax page.

As part of my new user setup, when they sign up for an account I create want to be able to create a directory under a Documents folder for them and then write a web.config file in that folder limiting access to it to the new account. However because they are still in the process they are an unauthenticated user at that point (Forms authentication), and I get an error that they don't have rights to that folder I want to create their sub-folder in. What do I need to set the folder security at to be able to create a folder and a file in that folder from code?

I have an MVC 3 application which uses asp.net authentication. I have just created a custom errors controller and a couple of views for unknown errors and 404's. This works fine when I am logged into the application but if an internal server error happens during logon I would like to display the error/unknown view. However I just keep getting redirected back to the login as I am not authenticated.
I have added a location path for 'Views/Error' to my Web.config to allow access to all users but I am guessing it's the controller access that is causing the redirection.
Is there any way you can allow this in MVC or do I need to think of another solution? Just did not want to add a generic message to the login page as that's what my unknown error view is for.

I have a WCF service that will be using basic authentication and would like to be able identify "who" is trying to use the service. I know that the HttpContext.Current is NULL and in the WCF service, but do not know what the alternative is to get the username.
For the website, I can use:
userName = HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables["LOGON_USER"];
How do I get userName in the WCF Service?

Why can I still access files inside a forms authenticated part of my site? Any webpages say that you need to login to view them, but people can still access images by typing in the address bar. I am using forms authentication with my own database, so none of the aspnetdb services like membership roles etc. Is this a bad way to do things because I'm pretty deep into it now and it would be very difficult to change.
