I just started getting the error message "Unable to Connect to the ASP.net Development Server" when debugging a website with VWD 2008 (everything was fine in the past). My system is Windows Vista with Windows Live OneCare firewall. I have reviewed other postings related to this problem, and they indicate firewall setting problems - settings not allowing VWD internet access. However, my settings on the "Windows Live OneCare Firewall Advanced Settings" tab specifically allow VWD.

This happens with a newly created local ASP.Net project when modified to use IIS instead of Cassini (which works for debugging). It prompts to set debug="true" in the web.config and then immediately pops up the error. Nothing shows up in the Event Viewer.
I am able to attach to w3wp to debug. It works but is not as convenient as F5.
I also have a similar problem with VS2008 on the same PC. Debugging used to work for both.
I have re-registered Framework 4 (aspnet_regiis -i). I ran the VS2010 repair (this is the RTM version). I am running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 box.
I do have Resharper V5 installed.

View 5 RepliesI'm getting this problem with one of my web projects. I've looked at [URL] and other suggestions around the place, none of which apply here. The odd thing is, it's occurring with *one* of my new web site projects, but not another one. Odd again is that they're both 100% fresh sites, created with the "New Web Site" option in the File menu, within a day of each other, and nothing has been done to them, apart from a bit of "hello world" html. WebSite1 was created first, and Cassini worked when I first created it the other day. A day later, I created WebSite2 and Cassini worked (and still works) with that one.
However, when I open WebSite1, I get the above error code - again, it was working fine the other day, and WebSite2 works fine. I've compared their .sln file - so differences apart from the VWDPort number used, and of course the path to the site and various GUIDs. Everything else is identical. Same with comparing web.config files. No differences there at all. So I'm stumped - why would Cassini start up fine with WebSite2 (and subsequent sites I create) but suddenly stop working for the WebSite1 project, when it was working ok a couple of days ago?
Not too long ago I was given a new PC with windows 7 Professional on it. Before, I had vs 2008 running on win xp which worked OK. I started getting error msg (Unable to connect to ASP.NET development server) after I installed vs 2008 (version 9.0.30729.1 sp1 vs team system dev. edition) and ran one of my projects and even a simple test project. The first msg shows the syntax of webdev.webserver with an example in the bottom. I can get this error by running the project or by showing any page in the browser. I noticed that file WebDev.WebServer.EXE does not appear in the folder C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv3.5. If that's the only reason why I am having this problem than how can I fix it. I was told that .net framework 3.5 works on top of .net framework 2.0?! I just want to sort out this .net framework mess on my new machine. I am willing to uninstall all .net framework and start fresh. Another thing that I am willing to try is to get from a coworker the WebDev.WebServer.EXE (from the .net framework 3.5 folder) and see if it works.

It was working fine till yesterday[i.e., It compiled and also i could run it using the asp.net development server by pressing ctrl+f5] and today when i tried to run it says "unable to connect to asp.net development server". I tried to reinstall visual studion 2008 and even now its not working. Also when i go to websites n asp.net configuration option it say the same error "unable to connect to asp.net development server". I absolutely no idea about why this error popped up. I got my project demo. day after n how can this be set right.

I reinstalled, repaired and re registered msdbg2.dll and edited hosts file but still get this error. I need to debug an application but I can't. View 3 RepliesI'd installed newly Visual Studio 2010,and i want to create a new local website on my iis server and i follow these steps:
1-from my iis i create a virtual directory
2-in command promt i execute these commands:
aspnet_regiis -i
aspnet_regiis -ga aspnet
3-i go to VS2010 and create a new website (HTTP) and choose my created Virtual Directory has been built in previous step
Now if i do step 3 with framework 4 i don't have any problem but with framework 3.5 my website hasn't been run and says me : "Unable to start debugging on the web server.The web server is not configured correctly. See help for common configuration errors. Running the web page outside of the debugger may provide further information."
I am getting this error, without any further details, when attempting to debug my ASP.Net project in VS2010. There are other developers using the same tools and code who are not having this problem therefore I know the problem is not in the web.config file. I have found several suggestions when googling the issue and tried them all to no avail. I uninstalled and re-installed VS2010 along with the .Net 4 framework. I made sure Anonymous as well as Windows authentication is enabled in IIS. I uninstalled and reinstalled IIS. I am at a loss. I can attach to the process and debug the ASP.Net code that way, but what I really need to be working on is a Silverlight app that is called from the ASP.Net and the breakpoints don't work in Silverlight when I attach to the process manually.

I get this error when I hit F5 in VS 2008. I have checked that Windows authentication is enabled on the site and it is. I can mannully attach the debugger to the IIS process and it works. What could be wrong? I have tried alot of things without success.

have a Visual Studio 2010 project which targets v4.0 of the .NET framework.In the project, I have a page with an ASP.NET UpdatePanel - which works perfectly within VS2010's development server.However, when deployed to an IIS 6 server, the controls in the UpdatePanel cause a full-page postback - not an async postback.The site has its own application pool.I've tried visiting the ScriptResource.axd URLs which are present in the rendered page and they all produce valid looking JavaScript files.I can't see any Javascript or other errors.

The behavior I'm getting is that if I launch the DevServer from VS2008, the first attempt to load a page takes minutes. After that, it's fine. Before the first page load, the DevServer UI responds to input normally (I can bring it up from the status area, use its context menu, and move the window around) until the first page load comes in. Then it shows the busy cursor (spinning blue ring) for 2-6 minutes before finally completing. There is no significant processor or I/O activity during this. After that, it runs normal speed, quite fast.

I am able to run the ASP.NET web site in IIS 7 without debugging just fine, but when I press F5 to debug it, I get: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Could not start ASP.NET debugging. More information may be available by starting the project without debugging. Unfortunately the help link is not helping me much and leads down a heck of a large tree of things. I checked the following:
Security requirements — I don't recall having to do anything special before. The worker process in IIS7 is w3wp.exe. It says that if it's running as ASPNET or NETWORK SERVICE I must have Administrator privileges to debug it. How do I find out if I need to change something here? Web site Property Pages > Start Options > Debuggers > ASP.NET is checked. Use custom server is set to the URL of the site (which works fine without debugging). Debugging is enabled in web.config. Application is using ASP.NET 3.5 (I want to move to 4.0 eventually but I have some migration to deal with). Application pool: Classing .NET AppPool (also tried DefaultAppPool). Surely it shouldn't be that hard to install IIS, VS, create a web site, and start testing it?
I'm getting "Cannot connect to ASP.NET development server" almost every time I stop the ASP.NET server before restarting the project in debug mode. It can take between 15 seconds and 2 minutes to get the error message, and Visual Studio is frozen.
Sometimes I get three in a row, and I have to wait 2 minutes each time, or go into Task Manager and kill to process. Then I have to start Visual Studio 2010 again, which is at least three times slower than Visual Studio 2008 to open.
It's *extremely* annoying. I know I don't have to close the server if the code has changed, but sometimes I simply want to restart my website in debug mode (there is a cache on most web service calls, so this clears the cache). A workaround is to add "foo" code to a class and restart the project.
I'm running Visual Studio 2010 Professional on Windows Server 2008. I'm running the Visual Studio Power Tools too, with the latest update.
I am having issues debugging locally within Visual Studio 2010 on Server 2008 R2 (x64) for a new ASP.Net MVC application. I am able to debug using the VS Development Server (Cassini) but when I change to use the Local IIS Web Server and Create Virtual Directory, I am unable to debug. I get the standard VS message:
"Unable to start debugging on the web server. The web server is not configured correctly. ..."
Everything looks standard in IIS. The Default Web Site is running under the ASP.NET v4.0 application pool. The virtual directory that Visual Studio created is running under the same app pool. I am running Visual Studio as the Administrator account. It feels like some security setting or something is preventing this to work but I'm at a loss to what it could be.
I was working away just fine on my ASP.NET 2.0 application (Win7 64 bit, IIS 7.5.76) when all of a sudden I get a pesky error message "Unable to start debugging on web server" when I start the app in Visual Studio. The error message (attached) is HTML text and is so long that I can't even get to the bottom of it to see what the punchline is. It happens with debug switched on and off.

I've worked on it plenty of times in the past on this machine with no issues, but for some reason now when I try to debug it I get the above error (Unable to start debugging the web server.
