.NET Application Not Logging To The Windows Event Log?
Mar 17, 2010
I have two ASP.NET MVC web applications. One of them logs unhandled exceptions to the windows event log. The other doesn't.Is there a setting in IIS or the web.config to enable event log logging? I'm really looking for avenues for investigation.

I'm using MS Enterprise Logging Application Block in an ASP.NET website.
For production launch, I will set up a log listener in one of these locations:
Sql Server database
Windows event log
Text files
Which has the least impact on performance?
NB - I can't switch to Log4Net or ELMAH at this point, so don't suggest that in your response.

I spent a day trying to make Ent Lib Logging work and log anything into database or event log. I have a web application and console application with the same Ent Lib config but only the console application is capable to log into the Event Log. I tried everything with permissions but I don't know what exactly I am doing — which services should have what. It does not work!
I read articles like this[URL] and I want to try to give the ASPNET account those permissions. I am using Windows 7 and I cannot find ASPNET user account. So where is it?
This is the config file which is automatically generated from Ent Lib utility and it works only on App.config, not on web.config:

In my windows service application (c#), I am checking if an event log exists then write to that event log, otherwise create new event log and write to it. But it always writes to the generic "Application" event log. Do I need to change some settings?

Can anyone explain why the following happens:My ASP.NET application requires access to Application event log.When I access web application initially, it returns "Security" exception (which is expected, as I haven't granted permissions to write to Application event log yet). Then I give read/write permissions to IIS_IUSRS group on the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetserviceseventlog. As a result of this action my web application starts working.Now I remove those permissions I've granted to IIS_IUSRS group. But my web application keeps working (although I'd expect "Security" exception raised again)So, why web application keeps working, although permissions to write to Application loghave been removed?

I have application that runs non stop in the background on a dedicated remote server.The application is build in .NET 4 using log4net for logging and SQL Server.I i think it would be best to use Windows Service for the main background application.I want to build a second application to manage and view the status and logs of the main application.Any recommendation on the best way to do that?How should i connect to the service to get the status or attach to log4net logging?Windows Service + Asp.net Website?Windows Service + Remote WinForms Application?On Server WinForms Application?

I'm debugging some unexpected behavior and while tracing in to the .NET framework I see a bunch of stuff like this:
if (Logging.On) {
Logging.PrintInfo(Logging.Web, this, SR.GetString(SR.net_log_n_certs_after_filtering, filteredCerts.Count));
...
}
But (as expected by default) the execution steps right over these. Is there some way to turn on the logging? Or is that just something that the framework developers can do while making special builds of the framework?

I am getting this error:
Server Application Unavailable The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is currently unavailable. hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser to retry your request.
Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this specific request failure can be found in the application event log of the web server. review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur.
However there is no error in the application event logs. So I am wondering if there's a specific setting in IIS or for the virtual site that enables logging?
Changing the customerror setting in the web.config seems to have no effect. I don't think it's even getting that far. IIS 6, Windows Server 2003

how can I enable database logging in my ASP.net application?
I am using VS2010 (ASP.net MVC2 Project) and would like to see logging that highlights database activity between the application and the database, including database connection establishment (as I do have a connection related error somewhere).

I am using asp.net membership and the login control. I would like to prevent a user from logging in with the same use rname if they are already logged in. I would like to place code in the LoggingIn or Authenticate event of the login control to check whether the user is login and prevent them from logging in again. Any ideas on the best way to do this?

I'm trying to configure the logging settings to log all events in a database and event viewer but email only errors and warnings. Database and Event Viewer part works fine except that I'm not getting any email for errors.
Note: There isn't any problem with smtp settings because I get event's emails if I add the listener to "General" and "All events" in category sources.
Here is my config: (I'm using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging 3.1.0.0)
<loggingConfiguration name="Logging Application Block" tracingEnabled="true" defaultCategory="General" logWarningsWhenNoCategoriesMatch="false">
<listeners>
<add databaseInstanceName="LOGGING_DB" writeLogStoredProcName="WriteLog"

We have a website portal hosted in Windows 2003 server. For security reasons we are using different windows Login user say (xxxx) for signin other than Administrator. Now with this user (xxxx) name I installed .net Windows Application. It was working fine. For some reasons I renamed the original windows Login user(xxxx) to different say (yyyy). Now this .net Windows Application is not working with (yyyy) and even it is not allowing me to uninstall it.

I am looking at how best to prevent a single user account logging on multiple times in a webforms application. I know that MembershipUser.IsOnline exists, but I've read a few forum and blog entries suggesting that this can be unreliable, particularly in scenarios where a user closes a browser (without logging out) and attempts to logon with a different machine or browser.I looked at implementing a last past the post type system; when a user logs on older users are simply kicked off. It seems that FormsAuthentication.Signout() only works for the current user.

something weird is happening! is a couple of days that my users are experincing a "logging out" isses, the error message is:
Event code: 4005
Event message: Forms authentication failed for the request. Reason: The ticket supplied was invalid.
Here the data:
1. the website is running on 3 server behind a load balancer
2. yes, machine key is the same all across thw websites, because the configuration is shared and all servers are pointing to the same folder on a NAS, this is the key:
<machineKey decryption="AES" decryptionKey=" ... snipped for security reasons ... " validation="SHA1" validationKey=" ... snipped for security reasons ..." />
3. I created the keys using an console app as suggested here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en us/library/ff649308.aspx#paght000007_webfarmdeploymentconsiderations
4. the form auth config is
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="SignIn.aspx" timeout="525960" />
</authentication>
5. the time on the servers is in sync

I'm experiencing a to me mysterious error when sending e-mails through a SMTP-server from an ASP.NET web application. I get the famous error "unable to relay for xxx@yyy.zzz". What's mysterious to me is that when I cut and paste the exact same code that sends the e-mail into an usual .NET Windows Forms application, send the e-mail with this application, it all works just fine. This made me think that perhaps the problem is that the ASP.NET application runs as NETWORK SERVICE while the Windows Forms application runs on a domain user account, but it turns out that I have another ASP.NET application sending e-mail through the same SMTP-server running under NETWORK SERVER at the same IIS, and this application does not experience this problem.
I've further tried to send e-mails through the SMTP-server manually by telnet the smtp-server on port 25 and running the SMTP-protocol manually, and it all works fine. The SMTP-server is not configured with any kind of authentication or SSL.
Another mysterious fact is that the ASP.NET application can send e-mails from an adress within the same domain to an e-mail adress within the same domain, but not to any adress outside of the domain. But the Windows Forms application, that uses the exact same code, can send e-mails from any adress to any adress both within AND outside of the domain.
So to summarize:
The ASP.NET application can send
e-mails from addresses within the
domain to adresses within the domain,
but not to addresses outside of the
domain.
A Windows Forms application running
the same code on the same computer
can send e-mails from ANY address to
ANY address.
Another ASP.NET application on the
same IIS running under the same
account (NETWORK SERVICE) can send
e-mails using the same SMTP-server
from ANY adress to ANY adress.
There is no authentication configured
on the SMTP-Server.
Both the ASP.NET application and the
Windows Forms application utilizes
the System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient class
to send a
System.Net.Mail.MailMessage.
The code that sends the e-mail massage is:
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
MailMessage mesasge = new MailMessage(txtFrom.Text, txtTo.Text, "Test mail", txtBody.Text);
SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient();
if (!(string.IsNullOrEmpty(txtUserName.Text))) //Is false since txtUserName.Text is empty
client.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Text);
client.EnableSsl = false;
client.Host = txtServer.Text;
client.Port = 25;
try
{
client.Send(mesasge);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
txtResponse.Text = ex.Message;
}
}
As far as I can understand, this should be a matter of configuration rather than coding issues.
