Application Accessing Event Log On Windows Server 2008 R2?

Feb 21, 2011

Can anyone explain why the following happens:My ASP.NET application requires access to Application event log.When I access web application initially, it returns "Security" exception (which is expected, as I haven't granted permissions to write to Application event log yet). Then I give read/write permissions to IIS_IUSRS group on the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetserviceseventlog. As a result of this action my web application starts working.Now I remove those permissions I've granted to IIS_IUSRS group. But my web application keeps working (although I'd expect "Security" exception raised again)So, why web application keeps working, although permissions to write to Application loghave been removed?

Setting Up Web Application Under IIS 7 On Windows Server 2008 Box

Feb 16, 2010

I've developed my .net web application in Visual Studio 2005. It's been running in production on a hosted server. We recently brought in-house our own servers and configured one as a web server. I am trying to set up my web application over there and am getting your typical errors like the resource cannot be found. If you could point me to a good link, that would be great, too. I know I am having very elementary problems like creating the correct virtual directory, etc.

Iis - Trying To Get An Application Up On IIS On A Windows Server 2008 Machine?

Feb 11, 2011

I'm trying to get an asp.net application up on IIS on a Windows Server 2008 machine. I can hit the app from localhost, no problem. But I can't access the app using the server's domain name either locally or from another machine on the network.But here's the odd part. I can access a normal file on IIS using the domain name, both from a browser running on the server and from a browser running on another machine on the network. Here's a synopsis ("http" converted to "htp" below because I don't have enough points to have all these links in my message):

From IE on the server itself:
works htp://localhost/foo.htm
works htp://localhost/App
works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm
dead htp://test.foo.com/App
From IE on another machine:
works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm
dead htp://test.foo.com/App

VS 2008 - No Error Is Generated And No Entry Is Logged In Windows Event Viewer On Server

Sep 9, 2011

i made an upgrade to an existing application (still developed by me), while testing on my development machine, everything worked fine. After migrating to a Test Server(windows 2003 server), users can not test the application, it periodically crashes their session and redirected them to the login page (Forms Authentication). No error is generated and no entry is logged in the windows event veiwer on the server. I also noticed this also happens when they try to access a particular page in the application.

The page contains 50 instance of a user-control. Each of the user-control contains 8 textboxes, 2 labels,1 hidden field and 12 asp.net validation controls. I tried saving a copy of this page from Internet explorer (IE8) on my development machine,its about 2.2MB in size.What may be wrong and what tracing tools can i use on my development machine (since it generates no errors). How can i also reduce the size of the page (noting that the asp.net validation controls generated alot of HTML codes)

Vb.net - Accessing A Windows Application From An ASPX Page?

Aug 2, 2010

I have an aspx page and I want to access an application on the client after seeking user permission. Both the windows application and the website are to be made in VB.NET.

EDIT: Here is the problem. From my .aspx webpage in vb.net, a visitor clicks on a link on my site, and if my winform is not already loaded on their desktop, it is then loaded with the users permission. This application should auto-load on the user's site at boot up time and always be in the background running. Make it an extremely thin client, taking the least cpu and bandwidth from the user, and running as a silent background process until needed.

Whenever the user visits one of my many websites, IN ANY BROWSER, somehow - the app running in the background communicates with the .aspx on one of my sites, and exchanges a silent username password identifying client winform app to the online .aspx app on my website.

Then the .aspx on my site PASSES a url such as "www.somewebsite.com" to the app running in the background, the background app then does a http request from the client's computer, not from my .aspx server, so the client's cookies and ip are visible to "www.somewebsite.com" server. The client collects the html for that page, stores it as a string, and also saves the ascii of that webpage as another string.

Both strings then are PASSED BACK to my .aspx website that the client is visiting, and the .aspx app then stores these results in a database.

Installation :: Windows Azure & Windows Server 2008 R2 Not Working?

Mar 17, 2011

I just downloaded and installled the Microsoft Windows Azure SDK yesterday for the first time and I am having issues running the application as I all I am getting is 503 errors. I run Windows Server 2008 R2 on my development machine and even tested it on another co-workers 2008 R2 and couldn't even compile the application. He got this error instead "A problem occurred while trying to set the "References" parameter for the IDE's in-process compiler. Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component."

From within my Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Virtual Windows 7 x86 enviroment, I was able to successfully build and run the Windows Azure SDK and it even showed the base ASP.NET application.So my question is, does the Windows Azure SDK for Visual Studio 2010 w/ Visual Studio 2010 SP 1 installed not work under Microsoft Server 2008 R2?

Visual Studio :: 2008 Design Mode Hangs On Windows 2008 Server?

Mar 28, 2010

I have looked at all the posts I can find on this problem and tried everything I can think of, but still the problem persists. I am getting really sick of it.was working fine for the last year until an update to MS Office 2007 caused a lot of problems (automatic update). After checking posts here, I removed it completely. No change. I then tried all the things I could find on other posts, also no change. Today, I removed VS and the Web Authoring Component and re-installed. Still no go.

Does anyone have a fix for this problem. It seems that it has been around a long time, but is still giving problems. I even saw one suggestion to reformat the drive! You've got to be joking!

MailMessage Sent To Any Adress From Windows Forms Application, But Not From Asp.net Application, After Both Are Using The Same SMTP-server?

Jan 27, 2010

I'm experiencing a to me mysterious error when sending e-mails through a SMTP-server from an ASP.NET web application. I get the famous error "unable to relay for xxx@yyy.zzz". What's mysterious to me is that when I cut and paste the exact same code that sends the e-mail into an usual .NET Windows Forms application, send the e-mail with this application, it all works just fine. This made me think that perhaps the problem is that the ASP.NET application runs as NETWORK SERVICE while the Windows Forms application runs on a domain user account, but it turns out that I have another ASP.NET application sending e-mail through the same SMTP-server running under NETWORK SERVER at the same IIS, and this application does not experience this problem.

I've further tried to send e-mails through the SMTP-server manually by telnet the smtp-server on port 25 and running the SMTP-protocol manually, and it all works fine. The SMTP-server is not configured with any kind of authentication or SSL.

Another mysterious fact is that the ASP.NET application can send e-mails from an adress within the same domain to an e-mail adress within the same domain, but not to any adress outside of the domain. But the Windows Forms application, that uses the exact same code, can send e-mails from any adress to any adress both within AND outside of the domain.

So to summarize:

The ASP.NET application can send
e-mails from addresses within the
domain to adresses within the domain,
but not to addresses outside of the
domain.
A Windows Forms application running
the same code on the same computer
can send e-mails from ANY address to
ANY address.
Another ASP.NET application on the
same IIS running under the same
account (NETWORK SERVICE) can send
e-mails using the same SMTP-server
from ANY adress to ANY adress.
There is no authentication configured
on the SMTP-Server.
Both the ASP.NET application and the
Windows Forms application utilizes
the System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient class
to send a
System.Net.Mail.MailMessage.

The code that sends the e-mail massage is:

private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
MailMessage mesasge = new MailMessage(txtFrom.Text, txtTo.Text, "Test mail", txtBody.Text);
SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient();
if (!(string.IsNullOrEmpty(txtUserName.Text))) //Is false since txtUserName.Text is empty
client.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Text);
client.EnableSsl = false;
client.Host = txtServer.Text;
client.Port = 25;
try
{
client.Send(mesasge);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
txtResponse.Text = ex.Message;
}
}

As far as I can understand, this should be a matter of configuration rather than coding issues.
