Didn't so many Comet open connections block the server resulting in big latency ?

In this example, the client connects for 5 seconds every time. I wanted to hold the client longer, for about 10 minutes.
My problem is - how to detect if the client disconnected during those 10 minutes? I tried using Response.IsClientConnected but it returns true even if I close the client. There must by some inidicator since the socket gets disconnected if I close the client.
What is the correct way (or best) way to implement Comet, HTTP Push, or Reverse AJAX?What .NET implementations would you recommend?
View 1 RepliesI'm working on a Web project using Asp.Net MVC, which I'll have to deploy to a farm environment.
I've read a lot of articles and I'm thinking on disabling completely the SessionState, I think this would make a more robust application, and will save me a couple of headaches (Everything I've read tells me that handling sessions on a farm isn't trivial).
There are some things that I still don't have totally clear with this approach though, the main one being the authentication/authorization process. Basically I'm not sure of how (if?) I can handle user sessions if there's no SessionState enabled on the server.
If a user logs into the web site and then tries to access another page, how can I know that the user is already logged in?
I know using cookies is insecure, I thought of a mix of cookies with the session Id stored in the DB, but I suppose that if I disable SessionState I won't have access to the session id either.
I got experience in ASP.NET application development. Now I want to develop my own application that should support huge traffic and it should be scalable. My site publishes news, videos and images.
Having already experienced in ASP.NET, whether it is fine to go with ASP.NET or Google AppEngine is good for building scalable application? To move with Google AppEngine, I need to learn entire concepts from the scratch. whether ASP.NET support will support to process heavy page requests or not.
Summary: ASP.Net website with a couple hundred users. Data is exported to Excel files which can be relatively large (~5 MB).
In the pilot phase (just a few users), we are already seeing occasional errors on the server in the exporting method.

Even aside from this particular problem, in general exporting to Excel requires the instantiation of huge Excel objects on the server for each request, which I've always assumed to mean disqualifies Excel for "serious" work on a highly-loaded server. Is there any general way to export to Excel in a "light-weight" manner? Would simply streaming the data into a CSV file work for this?
Do all comet style applications require a loop somewhere in the application on the serverside to detect updates/changes? how the logic behind a loopless comet style application would work?
View 3 RepliesI'm making an application with server sided variables that change every second. Every second those new variable need to be shown at all the clients that have the webpage open. Now most people told me to go with comet because I need to push/pull the data every second, now I've got a few questions: What would be a better solution looking at the fact that I need the new data EVERY SECOND, pulling from the client or pushing with the server?
Also the item ID's that are on the server side (with the variable's that ID got) can change and when the client refreshes the page he needs to get the oldest (and living) ID's. This would mean that my jquery/javascript on the client side must know which ID's he got on the page, what is best way to do this? Last thing is that I can't find a good (not to expensive) comet library/api for asp.net (C#). Anyone ever used a comet library with good results? We're looking at a site that should be able to have 2000 comet connections at every moment.

We host a web portal for the recruitment of staffs. The portal had close to sixty thousand (60,000 applicants/day) successfully registered applicants a day and at its peak period during the day the portal was hit with close to ten thousand (10,000 applicants/hour)
registrations an hour.
The Application process includes a number of functions such as
- Mail confirmation
- Upload of images
- Generation of unique Identification Numbers
- Providing information for the completion of the Application Form of various categories
- Print out of the Application Form
The form also maintains a login profile for each successful applicant and this is seen at the top of the application form when the user is logged in.
ARCHITECTURE
- The system was built using ASP.NET and MSSQL was used as a database for the data collected on the same physical server
- ASP.NET membership was the Application Programming Interface (API) used for user authentication and role management due to its flexibility and the ease of use.
- The passwords are hashed in the database.
- LINQ was used as the adapter for data handling to the database server
- Uploaded images was stored in a folder in the file system

- 8Gig RAM
- Windows server 2008
ISSUES ENCOUNTERED
- At peak period, the portal was overloaded and had a very slow response time
- SQL server reporting services ran out of memory when we generated reports due to size of the report.
We want an overhaul of the architecture that would enable more applications to be filled simultaneously without issues i.e. a site that can sustain the load, But I am not sure what to do.

However, I appear to get an error when I leave the page open running in the debugger. Specifically the above JScript error 12030.I'm not clear how to find the source but I assume it is because my page has logged out. If I refresh I go back to my login page.So, does this sound like the cause? If so, how to I address this?

Currently I m developing a web page which holds a grivview. As one of the column needs a multiple column dropdown with soring facility, I am using ajax:popupExtender to achive that. Basically in the column i have a Panel1(label & image which mocks up has a dropdown), ajax:popupExtender, Panel1(gridview to have mutiple column). When user clicks on it the ajax:popupExtender is called & the targetpopupid which is a panel2 with gridview is called.
Here when user clicks on thePanel1, I am able to display Panel2 using ajax:popupExtender. Also, when user selects some row, I am able to close/hide the ajax:popupExtender in the code behind using cancel(). (this is done in selectItemIndexchange of panel2 grid view).
But my problem comes when user doesn't select any row & clicks back on the panel1, the ajax:popupExtender will remain open. but it should have been closed as i am trying to mock up dropdown dunctionality. how can I hide/close ajax:popupExtender when user clicks on panel1 2nd time.
Following are the different approaches I tried but nothing worked out.
1. wrote JS, & tried to add attributes of the Panel1's onclick event.
Failed: Error - Object is undefined. even though i passed a valid obj from code behind.
