Get Helpers Working In MVC3 And Add @using Statements In Every Page?

Oct 26, 2010

In order to get Database.Open("sdfsdf"); to work in one of my MVC3 .cshtml pages I had to add a using statement at the top of the page.@using WebMatrix.Data.I added it to the Web.Config file under the <pages><namespaces> section and it didn't work.

1. Do .cshtml pages not respect that section in the web.config? If not

2. Do we need to add @using statements in every page? Or is there a better way?

I can't get helpers like @LinkShare.GetHtml and @Gravatar.GetHtml working despite have references to:

System.Web.WebPages

System.Web.Helpers

And adding @using statements.

3. What am I missing in order to get the helpers working in my MVC3 project?

MVC3 Razor Cannot Work With International Characters In Custom Html Helpers

Nov 16, 2010

I currently trying to convert a ASP.NET MVC2 application to ASP.NET MVC3 razor. I have a lot custom Html helper methods, which render html output, like the one below, which renders a button with some markup :

StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder("<input type='submit' id='") .Append(buttonId) .Append("' name='" ) .Append(buttonId) .Append("' value='") .Append(buttonValue) .AppendLine("' class='myclass1 myclass2' />");return MvcHtmlString.Create(sb.ToString());

I'm using the 'Configure Data Source' wizard to connect to my database and show the dataset in Gridview. I want to be able to update, insert and delete entries but am unsure how to build the query. I can write simple update statments to change database entries but how can I do this for entries that have been changed within the gridview?

HttpHandler Not Working In MVC3 Web Application

Apr 1, 2011

I've recently taken an existing ASP.NET 3.5 web forms application that was upgraded to .NET 4 last year (and has been running fine) and configured it to also run ASP.NET MVC3 following Scott Hanselman's blog post: Integrating ASP.NET MVC 3 into existing upgraded ASP.NET 4 Web Forms applications. It works well and I've successfully begun to introduce views based on Razor and the existing aspx pages continue to work.

The one thing that has stopped working, however, is a custom HttpHandler (our load balancer hits a specific address to ensure the application is available - the handler is for that address). The web.config has always declared the handler in the system.web section like this:

<httpHandlers>
<add verb="*" path="system/heartbeat.aspx"
type="My.Monitor.HttpHandlers.LoadBalancerHandler, My.Monitor"/>
</httpHandlers>

Now we're testing post-MVC3 and I'm getting an exception that reads:

The controller for path '/system/heartbeat.aspx' was not found or does not implement IController. I have defined a RegisterRoutes method in my Global.asax and that method is called from the Application_Start. Within RegisterRoutes I've got the IgnoreRoute declarations from Hanselman's blog:

routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}");
routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.aspx/{*pathInfo}");

which I thought was to prevent the Routing system from taking anything with an extension of .aspx. I can reproduce the issue in VS2010 as I debug, and the deployment environment is running IIS 6. What can I do to prevent the Routing system from trying to handle that address so the custom handler can do it's thing?

MVC :: Both Statements Are Working, But Repopulating The Form Doesn't Work?

Jun 7, 2010

When I post multiple DropDownBoxes like below:

Ticket 1: <%= Html.DropDownList("nr_of_tickets") %>
Ticket 2: <%= Html.DropDownList("nr_of_tickets") %>
Ticket 3: <%= Html.DropDownList("nr_of_tickets") %>

And my action controller will catch these values like:

public ActionResult Step1(int id, int[] aantal_tickets)

or:

public ActionResult Step1(int id, IList aantal_tickets)

Both statements are working, but repopulating the form doesn't work. I get in every dropdown list the same value as the value selected in the first dropdownlist.

What am I doing wrong?

MVC3 Ascx Vs Razor Page Rendering?

Mar 9, 2011

I have an aspx web page that renders correctly. When converted to razor, it does not. Here is a simplified example (stripped of all extraneous stuff).

aspx:

<asp:Content ID="indexContent" ContentPlaceHolderID="ToolContent" runat="server">
<% string test = "<div><b>Tag Test</b></div>"; %>
<h2><%= test %></h2>
</asp:Content>

razor:

@section ToolContent {
@{ string test = "<div><b>Tag Test</b></div>"; }
<h2>@test</h2>
}

The aspx renders as expected. The razor just displays the content of "test" (<div><b>Tag Test</b></div>) in the header tag.

I assume that my understanding of razor is flawed. If someone could enlighten me and/or show me a solution/work around.

C# - ViewData Set In An ActionFilter Is Coming Out Null On Master Page MVC3?

My Original Issue here:Help! I've got repository access in my MVC master page! Refactor time!What originated as a re factoring job to improve performance has revealed new issues. If I should keep this in my original question - feel free to delete this one, and rename the old one to something more relevant. My issue is that I save these settings in the filterContext.Controller.ViewData object but its coming through as null on my master page. Here is the relevant code:

Asynchronous C# Method Calls In Page Working On Debug, But Not Working On Live Site

Jan 25, 2011

OK Here is the situation:

I have a web app with a table of statistics on our salesmen's customers, and each row has a sparkline graph showing the general trend of the sales data for the last 12 months. Each page shows a particular salesman's customer list, and some of them can have an enormous number of customers = an enormous number of rows = an enormous number of sparklines (e.g. one in particular has 125 and takes 15 seconds to load).

For this reason, jQuery sparklines could not be used - they completely pinned the CPU of a user accessing a page with a lot of sparklines with IE.

So I moved on to using the Google Chart API, which worked much better, except for two issues: 1) it's on a secure site, and the Google Chart API URL is only served over HTTP (solved by using a small wrapper script to download the graph dynamically and re-serve it from our secure server); and 2) on a page with 125 sparklines, it was still very slow due to the number of requests (even when the 0-9 server prefixes are used to maximize the # of available connections).

So my next step beyond this was to try to make each of the "download/grab/re-serve image" method calls asynchronous - and it worked!

...but only on my dev box running in debug mode.

When I pushed it up to the live site, it was faster, but it left some of the images unloaded, which is of course unacceptable.

So here is what I was hoping some SO hotshot would know:

1) Why are my asynchronous method calls working while debugging, but not working on the live site?

2) Is there any easier way to get a large number of sparklines of some sort to load quickly on a secure server without making me want to tear my hair out?

2a.) Does anyone have any experience using the ASP.NET Chart Library? Is this something I should investigate?

2b.) A co-worker suggested I make my own sparkline routine using a 1x1 CSS background image and varying the height. The problems are a) it is completely un-extensible in case we want to make changes; b) it seems hacky as hell (leaves about a bajillion DIVs per sparkline in the markup); and c) I have no idea if it will be fast enough when there are 100-200 of them on one page - what are your thoughts on the feasibility of the 1x1 sprite approach?

Web Forms :: Is Possible To Use The Mvc HTML Helpers

Jan 14, 2010

I have been using web forms and I have been let down by them. I hate the way it mangles my element id's and names. I want to have full control over my html and have the ability to have multiple forms on one page.

I do not use view state or post backs. All my server communication is done using JQuery ajax and sometimes page methods.

My pages do not make use of any runat=server controls other than occasionally using the repeater.

For now I have been using inline code like the following but I like the mvc html helpers.

EXAMPLE:

[Code]....

At the moment, using the asp.net mvc framework is not an option but I would like to use the HTML helpers in my asp.net application.

Is this possible to use the mvc html helpers or do I have to create my ow helpers?

I thought it had to do with the fact that the value is empty, but from the two examples, they are nearly identical. Is this a bug? All was working before I upgraded.

MVC Template Helpers - Get Lower Case ID's?

In order to standardize the ID's of all html elements I want this to be lower case. Rather than specifying the ID manually - which won't get updated if I rename my property, I'd like to establish a convention. I'm sure I read this was possible somewhere and I'm currently scanning the interwebz to find it.

MVC :: HTML Helpers - Passing Id And Name To Views?

Feb 21, 2011

I´m learning mvc and I found a problem. I have a product table that stores currencies in integers. On the other hand I have a table name currency that stores each int id with the currency name.

On html.dropdownlist I followed the pattern:

The name of the form field (ArtistId) The list of values for the dropdown, passed as a SelectList The Data Value field which should be posted back with the form The Data Text field which should be displayed in the dropdown list The Selected Value which is used to set the dropdown list value when the form is displayed

This was great for Forms in order to display selections. Right know I´m finishing my details views and I need to use the int id on product table but display the name on currency table associated to that int id.

Does anyone knows if it exist an html helper that renders the Data Text Field that should be dsiplayed on the View taking into consideration the int number?

Something like @html.display("Name", model.product.currencyid) where name is pulled from db.currency?.
