.net - Difference Between Properties Of An Object Showing In Debugger Vs Proprties In Intellisense

Sep 17, 2010

When I inspect an object in the debugger, I see a lot more properties in the debugger than what is available in Intellisense or code.

For example, the Page object in ASP.NET in the debugger shows a property RelativeFilePath which has a value. But when I try to use it in code, it doesn't exist. Why is that?

I looked up the property RelativeFilePath in MSDN, it exists for mobile controls. Not sure why it shows up then in the debugger for a regular asp.net control.

VS 2008 Express - Intellisense Not Showing Namespace

Nov 18, 2011

I have a typed data set in the app_code folder. I created a new class (class1.cs) inside the app_code folder, and for some reason, when I type:

using SomeNameSpace1.someNameSpace1

it's as if the above namespace does not exist: "SomeNameSpace1" or "SomeNameSpace1.someNameSpace2" does not exist. If I create the class file outside of the app_code folder, then the namespace DOES exist. What am I missing?

By the way, the namespace i'm trying to use is the typed data set that was auto-generated.

How To Make VisualStudio Intellisense Work In Html Properties Of Strongly Typed View

Feb 20, 2010

I think the title says it all, but to be clear:

If I put something like:

<%=Model.Project.Id %>

in the body of a strongly typed view, I get full intellisense for my model.

However, if I put:

<a href="/Projects/Edit/<%=Model.Project.Id %>">

With the script being written within an html property (in this case the href="" property), the intellisense doesn't work.I imagine this is a limitation of VisualStudio, but it seems this is a very common task and should be able to work. Is there a fix for this? Does my version of VisualStudio have a problem?

Visual Studio :: Folder Names Not Showing In Namespace Intellisense?

Jan 25, 2011

When using VS2008 and C# I choose File - New - Web Site.I use namespaces in the aspx files in the same folder.The problem is that the aspx files in one folder can not access the aspx files in other folders even though the files in each of the other folders use the same namespace followed by the folder name.

In fact, if I am in one folder and type the namespaces followed by a period, the other folder names are not displayed in intellisense, only the name of the folder name of the aspx file in which it resides is displayed on the intellisense.

How can I get the other folder names to show in intellisense from any other folder that I am working in when coding in the code behind? fyi, in the html inherit I point to the namespace, the folder name and the code behind file then in the code behind file I code the namespace, the folder name the aspx file is in and the class is the name of the code behind file.

Architecture :: Looking For Better Way To Design, To Use Object's Properties With The Object Data Source?

May 10, 2010

I've posted the same question in the Object Data Source forum. This is a link to it http://forums.asp.net/t/1554083.aspx. Maybe I should've posted here to begin with. There seemed to be some overlap so I wasn't sure which was the best on to post the question in.

I'm trying to get a better understanding of how I could've designed my app so that the Object Data Source could work with the properties of my business objects. Please read the other post to see how it's currently being done. Sorry for the link to the other page. I didn't want to post a bunch of duplicate information. I would love to get some suggestions for alternative ways of doing this.

Intellisense/Reference To Static Class Object Lost

Jul 21, 2010

We have a Static class that 's called CData in our asp.net c# app.It handles all the data layer CRUD functionality on our pages.

Problem is, were are losing the intellisense reference in our pages to it.For example: we would expect to type CData.(dot) and have a list of methods and properties available to us.

Nope. Not there.

I kind of thought it was because the file was getting too long at 3000 lines of code, since some other static classes were working ok.

So then I thought that I'd try wrapping the CData Class in a namespace. That worked, but of course I had to put an include statement of the top of each page that's using CDATA, also, now some of the other developers are getting errors in there pages complaining about missing methods that are in CDATA, but their pages are not seeing.

Vb.net - Ascx.designer 'properties' Not Showing Up In Reflection At Runtime?

Jul 2, 2010

I have a very simple setup, single mycontrol.ascx with assoicated mycontrol.ascx.designer.vb and mycontrol.ascx.vb file. mycontrol.ascx embeds a single reference to a custom control: "MyMenu":

<mM:myMenu id="myMenu1" runat="server" />

This has created a protected reference in the mycontrol.ascx.designer.vb file:Protected WithEvents myMenu1 As Global.CustomControls.MyMenuNow, when I breakpoint the Page_Load() event of mycontrol.ascx, and inspect the members returned from the type via:

Me.GetType().GetMembers()

I cannot any reference to myMenu1. If I look at the control with intellisence, the property is accessible:
Me.myMenu1 Can anyone explain exactly what I'm missing and what I need to do to access designer created properties at runtime through reflection?

Forms Data Controls :: Grid Showing Two Lines And Then The Difference?

Jan 18, 2011

Before I get too involved in this new page, I want to besure I am going to go about it the correct way.

What is needed is a grid of some sort. The query returns groups of records, every two records are related and I need to insert a summary line after each pair of records.

Company 1 current
Company 1 previous
*insert a summary of the currency amounts displayed with the two records.
Company 2 current
Company 2 previous
*insert a summary of the currency amounts displayed with the two records.
.
. and so on

What data control should I use to do this (a girdview, datagrid, listview??, something else?) I am running VS. 2008.

I was given a summary sample on a previous post: [URL] But I want to be sure this is what I should actually use.

Performance Difference Of Code In Aspx And Cs Files For Showing And Hiding Control Dynamically

Feb 18, 2011

I was thinking about the performance when I use code to hide some control in aspx page using delimiters or in cs file. For e.g. If I have a panel and I want it to get shown following some condition, so I can achieve this by two ways

1: Using code in aspx file, something like this

<% if(isAllowed) { %>
<asp:Panel ...></asp:Panel>
<% } %>

2: In the code file, something like this

<asp:Panel ID="pnlMyPanel" Visible="false"></asp:Panel>

And in cs file

if(isAllowed)
pnlMyPanel.Visible=true;

In my view, first way should be good as it will not at all create any Panel in the page. Am I correct here?

Visual Studio :: VS2010 Master Pages And JQuery Intellisense / Intellisense Only Seems To Work For JQuery

Jan 6, 2010

I think my main problem is actually more to do with master pages that anything else.. Below is a description:

If you use master pages in your website and you have pages in different sub directories then the simplest way to add JQuery references is using <script src='<%# ResolveUrl ("jq.js")%> /> in the master page header??

This means that the .js files are correctly referenced in all pages that use the master. My main problem is that intellisense only seems to work for JQuery when the JQ Script is actually referenced in the header and not by using ResolveUrl('') <script src="/scripts/jq.js" />

I dont want to have to live without intellisense, Surely there is a way to get around this. What am I doing wrong.

Output Object Properties To HTML?

Dec 7, 2010

Idealy i would like to get a web-page that looks like the popup-windows that you get in Visual Studio when you click an object while debugging. So if the object contains any arrays, i'd also like to see what's in them, and for all those objects inside i would also like to be able to go deeper into those objects.

The reason i'm asking this, is that I can't debug my code locally (because it uses a web-service that will only run on the production), and I can't install Visual Studio on the production server, So i need to be able to actually debug on the production server. I can write my code locally though, and upload it to the production.

Difference Between DTO & Dumb Business Object ?

Few questions.Is there any difference between a DTO and a dumb business object ? I filled the DTO inside the DAL and loaded it inside a DTO list and now returning to Business Logic layer but it seems its the same like dumb business objects to me (with only less attributes)

How To Get The Values Of All Localizable Properties That Appear On A Page Object

Jan 28, 2011

I'm working on an application that uses an approach to localization where they just call a translate function for every piece of text on a page. It leads to a lot of redundant code that looks like this (psuedocode):

function page_load():

translateControlText(control1, language);
translateControlText(control2, language);
translateControlText(control3, language);
translateControlText(control4, language);
translateControlText(control5, language);
translateControlText(control6, language);
translateImageAlt(image1, language);
100 more lines of this on a single page

The application is massive, so I don't have the opportunity to rewrite the translation logic. However, I think I could just loop through all of the controls on a page, check their type, and translate the appropriate property. At least then I would just have to call 1 function per page, and then throw it in a base page or master. However, I probably wouldn't want to translate certain things, such as table cells. Regardless, there is an attribute called Localizable that is on many properties such as Control.Text and Image.Alt. I'd like to be able to get a list of every string on the Page that is stored in a Property marked Localizable. Is this possible? Is this possible without reflection?

How To Add Some Custom Instance Properties To User Object

Nov 29, 2010

I'd like to add some custom instance properties to an ASP.Net User object. for example, I'd like to log every user's login and have something like: User.LoginTimes or calculate the User Profile's Completion percentage and be able to access it like: User.ProfileInfoPercentage, etc.

Now What I'd like to know is what would be the best approach to do this?

Forget about user instances? (e.g. define a database table with userid and ProfilePercentage info and retrieve data from profile like: DB.GetProfilePercentage(Context.Current.User.UserID) )
Override the ASP.Net User class and add my own functionalities.
Use Extension methods for the user class.

Bind Object To The Controller, To Show Some Properties Value?

Feb 17, 2011

I'm a junior ASP.NET developer comes from Java background, so may be my question is strange.

I want to build an ascx (asp control) which accept an object as parameter for example :

1- we have a class called Device ( Contains some properties name, color , Specification (another object))

2- we have a control DeviceItem ( Contains Table to view some of the Device properties value ) and contains a property called Device

if the devices object retrieved from the Database and we have an object called device1 from Type Device

is there a direct way to pass the Device object (device1) to the DeviceItem control, some thing like :

<uc1:DeviceItem ID="DeviceItem1" runat="server" Device="THE_DEVICE_OBJECT"/>

and then bind this object to the controller, to show some properties value?

Using LoadControl With Object Initializer To Create Properties?

Jan 20, 2010

In the past I've used UserControls to create email templates which I can fill properties on and then use LoadControl and then RenderControl to get the html for which to use for the body text of my email. This was within asp.net webforms.

I'm in the throws of building an mvc website and wanted to do something similar. I've actually considered putting this functionality in a seperate class library and am looking into how I can do this so that in my web layer I can just call EmailTemplate.SubscriptionEmail() which will then generate the html from my template with properties in relevant places (obviously there needs to be parameters for email address etc in there).

I wanted to create a single Render control method for which I can pass a string to the path of the UserControl which is my template. I've come across this on the web that kind of suits my needs:

[code]....

Does that make sense? I was just wondering if this is at all possible in the first place and how I'd implement it? I'm not sure if it would be possible to map the properties set on 'object' to properties on the loaded user control and if it is possible where to start in doing this?
