Performance Difference Of Code In Aspx And Cs Files For Showing And Hiding Control Dynamically
Feb 18, 2011
I was thinking about the performance when I use code to hide some control in aspx page using delimiters or in cs file. For e.g. If I have a panel and I want it to get shown following some condition, so I can achieve this by two ways
1: Using code in aspx file, something like this
<% if(isAllowed) { %>
<asp:Panel ...></asp:Panel>
<% } %>
2: In the code file, something like this
<asp:Panel ID="pnlMyPanel" Visible="false"></asp:Panel>
And in cs file
if(isAllowed)
pnlMyPanel.Visible=true;
In my view, first way should be good as it will not at all create any Panel in the page. Am I correct here?

I need to show/hide a table-row upon the click of a linkbutton. I have gotten it to show the row when clicked, but instantly reverts back to being hidden. I have tried putting the CSS style display attribute in a numerous amount of ways and it is still not working.
This is my .aspx file:
[Code]....
This is the .js file that is properly imported:
[Code]....
When loading the page I have tried a numerous amount of ways to set the attribute to none, in the stylesheet, in the style attribute of the tag on the .aspx file, via a similar javascript function that hides the element. All of these show the same result, when clicking the button it simply reloads into being hidden after being changed.

We have a .aspx file which has about 400 lines of javascript code. Is it a good idea to have such huge code in its own file? What is the performance difference in having huge javascript code in aspx as against the .js file?

I have a designer working on several pages in Dreamweaver. The designer is creating .aspx files with the Page directive at the top. These are getting shipped to me and I'm adding them to the Visual Studio ASP.NET WebForms Web Application Project. The problem is that there's no code-behind file by default, and I'm trying to find a shortcut to have them autogenerated as if I've added a fresh page from Visual Studio.

I'm trying to use a third-party ActiveX control on our intranet ASP.NET site, and I've run into a problem I can't figure out.
Expected behavior: The control expects to see a specific variable in the URL ("msg"). If you provide it, it works. If you don't provide it, it complains that the value is missing.
If I put the control in an HTML page, it works fine. But if I then change the page's type to aspx, the control acts as if the variable isn't there. The control still loads and runs; I'm not getting any permission or safety messages. But it complains that "msg" wasn't provided on the URL.
In other words, if I try these URLs, the first one works fine; the second one gives me the "you didn't provide the msg parameter" complaint:
(works fine)
http://mysite.mydomain.com/controltest/test.html?msg=123
(complains)
http://mysite.mydomain.com/controltest/test.aspx?msg=123
I know the aspx version is being processed by the server before being sent to the client, but there aren't any server-side commands or tags (it's the same file, just copied and renamed). As far as I can tell, the resulting page that is sent to the client is exactly the same.
Is there something about aspx vs html that would cause the control to not be able to get that variable? I can see it fine from javascript that I add myself. Here's the content of the page. Not much to it. If I get this working I intend to add some aspx tags and code, but there's no point yet.
<html>
<head>
<title>
ActiveX Control Test
</title>
</head>
<body>
<OBJECT ID="control1" CLASSID="..." CODEBASE="..." >
</body>
</html>

I am converting an old asp project to a new .NET project. Now, all vb code are inside aspx files, and we are on the process of moving all vb script from aspx files to .vb files. My problem is, I can't debug the vb script inside most of the aspx files. All my friends don't have this problem. I think the problem is with vb text editor.
I am using Visual Studio 2008.
Is there anyway, I can make visual studio understand that aspx files have vb script inside them.
can't debug the code
can debug the code

I had problems showing my .aspx files on my server after "copy website"-ftp, as the server had ASP.NET version 2.0. However, html-files worked like a charm. I got my server-dude to install ASP.NET 4.0 on server, and I can now publish an empty aspx-file only containing text without error. BUT, if I add a standard login-form from ASP.Net and copy the website, it says "Server Error in '/' Application", "Configuration Error" blablabla and "Line 8: roleManager enabled = "true"/>" is highlighted in red..And also some IIS-errors. What is IIS? I thought IIS was for people who ran websites from their computers? Is this an IIS-error? What can I do to fix this?

I noticed that some aspx controls were not being recognized by intellisense, and when I tried to compile, I got errors stating that the controls basically didn't exist.
After a lot of tinkering, I realized that the .aspx.designer.cs file was missing for several .aspx files.
What is the best way to re-create the files?

I have code that needs to run in two deployments. Let's call them deployment H and deployment W.
The code is already running in deployment H, and there's an aspx page and an aspx.cs code-behind file. The code is compiled for framework 2.0 which is the lowest common denominator of the two deployments. Deployment H has its own logos and styling which are coded in its aspx file.
Deployment W now wants to use this same page, but it wants its own logos and styling. There are also additional fields on the page that deployment H doesn't need.
I think it's easier to maintain one code base which is why I want the same code-behind file, but I am having trouble figuring out how to set this up in Visual Studio. Orginally, I was going to have two projects, one for W and one for H, but I'd have to make the same changes to both files when some of the common areas changes.

I am working on an ASP.NET project that has significant backend processing existing in PLSQL. I was wondering if I re-write this code properly in C# can I get similar performance results or is the PL/SQL code going to beat my C# code every time?

You've probably noticed that when you debug an error which comes from an ASPX or ASCX file (literally, not from a corresponding code-behind file), ASP.NET displays an error page showing you the source file and the line on which the error occurs. The source file being displayed is automatically generated from parsing the page/control. The question is: how can I see this source file without purposely causing an exception?
I'd love to hear that there is some programmatic way (the complexity doesn't matter) to generate source files (preferrably, .cs) from a series of ASPX/ASCX files.
Example. Consider the following ASPX page (the code-behind file may even be absent):
<%@ Page Language="C#"%>
<%@ Register Assembly="AspxGen" Namespace="AspxGen" TagPrefix="ag" %>
<html>
<head><title>Some Title</title></head>
<body>
[Code]....
d:DevAspxGenAspxGenDefault.aspx(9,80): error CS0103: The name 'ThereIsNoSuchProperty' does not exist in the current context
This means, theoretically I can open the .CS files passed to the compiler (namely, App_Web_sqj3krv3.0.cs and App_Web_sqj3krv3.1.cs) and see what ASP.NET has generated from my ASPX markup. Trying to rephrase the previous question: how can I obtain this file from an arbitrary ASPX file (assuming that the file is correct and hence no info will be given on where to search)?

I have a drop down list that hides a panel with a bunch of controls when a certain value is selected, and shows the panel again when some other value is selected. This works fine. However it's slow when running both on my local webserver and on my web host, and takes about 1-2 seconds. What could be the reason for this? The only thing I do is to check which value is selected and hides/shows the panel.

I was using the code below to query the database and to show or hide content if the result was true of false. I use two panels so I can dispaly the right content block depending on EVAL
<asp:Panel
ID="Panel1"
runat="server"
Visible='<%#
(Convert.ToBoolean(Eval("GenreId"))).Equals(false) %>'>
<asp:Panel
ID="Panel2"
runat="server"
Visible='<%#
(Convert.ToBoolean(Eval("GenreId"))).Equals(true) %>'>
This was working with a CSS layout but I had to place all the content in a table and now it does not work. Is there another way to do it

I was just editing some C# code between <% %> tags in an .ascx file, and I noticed that the Refactor contextual menu is unavailable. And even if I manually add items from this menu to a custom toolbar, they are disabled when viewing aspx/ascx files.
I usually only have small snippets of C# code in my aspx/ascx files, but it would still be nice to be able to perform refactoring operations on any code that exists between <% %> tags. I feel like I'm going back to the dark ages when I have to use find/replace to change the name of a variable.
Questions
Is there a way to enable Visual Studio's refactoring features while viewing aspx/ascx files in Visual Studio?
Are there any Visual Studio plug-ins (preferably free) that offer this kind of functionality?

In my website, I have a TreeView that has this structure:
Root
|-Leaf
|-Parent
|--Leaf
|--Leaf
|--Child
|---Leaf
|---Leaf
|--Child
|---Leaf
|---Leaf
Is it possible to make the tree in a "collapsed" state where all the Leaf nodes and ONLY leaf nodes are hidden from view until its parent node is expanded? The ideal solution would be to do this without a postback, but any solution at this time would be helpful. The "collapsed" view would look like this:
Root
|-Parent
|--Child
|--Child
Expanding the Root, Parent or Child nodes should show their Leaf nodes. Collapsing the node should re-hide its leaf nodes, but leave the child nodes visible.
