.net - Session Variables Clearing On Response.redirect ('page.aspx",false)
Mar 1, 2010
I have an webforms app that loses it's session variables on response.redirect. I've read Bertrand Le Roy's blog about this and still can't get it to work. The page works in production. However, when I try in the VS2k8 IDE, the session variables are there right before response.redirect and on the first line of the next page, the variables are nothing. I've confirmed the session id is the same so I'm not skipping sessions. The target page is relative so the web server doesn't think we're changing sites (as confirmed by the sessionid).
Response.Redirect("menu.aspx", False)

I have the following default.aspx.vb
[Code]....
and I'm trying to clear the dropdown lists and the text box but also still give the thankyouLabel.Text message back to the user to give them some idea that their data has been submitted. I know that with a response.redirect that you're doing a postback but what I'm wondering is if there's a better way to clear a form so I can give users a clear form and also my thankyouLabel.Text message.

what i have is the follwoing Page1.aspx.cs has the following redirection in it. Response.redirect(Errors.aspx) once i go to the errors.aspx page i have a back button but at the moment it does a history.back(-1) . That is not totally corect, what i want to do is when i click on the back button go to the page that originated the call ie Page1.aspx so it goes through the Page_Load in order to refresh statues on the page. What is the best way of achieving this?

Building asp.C# shopping app that is using a hosted payment page to process payments (using posting of data to a hosted payment page). SSL certificate is signed and installed.
Flow:
Prelim) (HTTPS) Users authenticate using asp Login control
1) Users add items to cart.
2) (HTTPS)Users go to checkout page.
3) Users finalize their order, then click pay now after agreeing to T&C.
4) Server gets cart data (from MSSQL2005) and sets a transaction cookie (expiry set to 20 mins).
5) (HTTPS) Server Response.Redirects to an html page (in the same folder as the login protected pages).
6) Html page reads transaction cookie data and generates form fields.
7) (HTTPS) Html page posts data to hosted payment page (php).
8) User enters payment info and clicks pay now.
9) (HTTPS) hosted payment page posts info back to a .aspx page that checks if payment OK.
10a) If payment !OK, redirects to a declined page.
10b) (HTTPS) If payment OK, sets a verification cookie (expiry set to 20 mins). Then redirects to another html page.
11) Html page reads cookie data and generates form fields.
12) (HTTPS) Html page posts data to hosted verification page (php).
13) Verification page verifies (of course), if transaction ok.
14) (HTTPS) verification page posts data to a .aspx page that checks if verification OK.
15) If verification OK, process orders and do receipt stuff.
Issue:
This control flow was tested on an unsigned dev environment. SSL was being enforced, if needed on the unsigned SSL certificate. So we'd get prompts that certificate may be bad, but the control flow worked seamlessly.
However, now live with a signed SSL certificate, going from step 5 to 6, we are encountering a situation where some users (not duplicated every time, but verified that it does occur) when they click pay now and are redirected to the html page, they are forced back to the ~/login.aspx page (as if they were logged out).
Things to note:
a) The session did not time out.
b) The browsers have cookies and javascript enabled.
c) I can process the entire flow seamlessly on the same machine with other accounts, and occasionally, the same account.
So, basically, I'm stumped... Is this a viewstate error? A login control bug that won't let me redirect to an html page because it is now using a real SSL? Anyone have any experience with this kind of deal? I'm at a loss for solutions at this point.

For some reason it seems as though variables that I declare in javascript sometimes persist themselves across applications even when I do a response.redirect. I thought that a response.redirect would clear them out.

I have done a web appllication and when run simultaneously from different locations, the one that is started first would use the one that is started late's session variable and datatable contents. This is an exams web app and pageone.aspx results should never be used for pagetwo.aspx's results, because they are not the same questions.
What can I do to prevent this from happening. I am desperate, people are standing by to do exams and time is not on my side.

I have an issue of losing an InProc session variable when I call Response.redirect. I have seen a number of posts related to this, but haven't found a solution. My code is essentially:
Session("MyVariable") = "SomeBoolean"
Response.Redirect("NewUrl.aspx", false)
When I try to read Session("MyVariable") on the NewUrl.aspx page, it doesn't exists.
What's odd is that this doesn't typically happen in my local environemnt, but hapens quite often, if not all the time, on the shared server this application resides on. I saw some info about web farms and load balancing which could cause an issue. I am fairly certain this app is not part of a web farm.
A little background, in case there is a better method than using Session State...
I have created the ability for an administrator of this applicationto log in as any other user using a "Skeleton Key" password. When the admin does this, I store a boolean in session which refers to the fact that they are logged in and "Impersonating' another user. This gives the admin additional access that the user would not normally have. Anyhow, that is why I store a sessoin variable.

is it possible to create a new Session Id using C# and without using a Response.Redirect(...Page ... ). I want to create a new session Id on page load.
Reasons for doing so:
I have a testing application that creates IFrames to act as users. the problem I have is that with Multiple Instances (or Multiple IFrames running the same application "Default.aspx") all IFrame's are using the Same Session ID. I have variables stored in the Session ID that I need to be seperated from IFrame to IFrame. Ex:
IFrame 1 gets passed a query string of a client ID "1"
IFrame 2 gets passed a query string of client ID "2"
WHen the IFrame 2 gets loaded the session state of IFrame 1 inherits the IFrame 2's session's making the Client ID in Session 1 = "2". See what I am getting at?
I want to be able to have each IFrame create its own Session State. I guess there is 2 questions to this, 1.) is it possible to create a new Session State by abandoning the original and by doing so will that abandon both session ID's and just create an ID for both IFrames being the same ID? 2.) How can I do this if it is possible :-)

This is weird. In my newly developed chat application, when I invoke Response.Redirect, I am losing my session data. What is particualrly odd is that this sometimes seems to occur after a slight delay, so I reach the page, and then the session info gets lost momentarily thereafter. Mostly though it seems to get lost immediately. I have of course googled this issue, but yet to find anything that speaks to my problem. SessionState is in InProc mode. Session state has been working fine for me until this unexpected problem, so everything is configured right. So far the only workaround I can think of is to use a link instead of a button, and use javascript to call a server-side function on onclick to do the work I need to do before the link gets invoked. Messy, and I'd rather not go that way unless there's no alternative.
Just to preempt one red herring, I do use Response.Redirect(<address>, false).
The problem occurs both on the testing and production servers. I'm running ASP.NET 3.5 on IIS7.

I'm trying to get the previous page URL after I do a response write and i've looked around the web and people are using HTTP_REFERER but that doesn't work with Response.Redirect so is there anyway to get the URL of the previous page?
I have this code on a few pages and i need to know which page it is coming from when it gets to the servererror/default.aspx page
Response.Redirect("servererror/default.aspx?404")
And on my servererror/default.aspx page i'm just trying to grab the previous page URL and put it into the Session Session("ErrorPage")
UPDATE
I have now got it to work like this
Response.Redirect("server-error.aspx?404&" & Request.Url.ToString())
That passes the URL of the page with the error to the next page and I then grab that from the Query String

I had a problem lately that I managed to have for it 2 solutions and I am wondering which one should I choose. Here the issue : When a user requests my site ( www..com), I am gonna redirect him to (www..com/en) because it is a multilingual site. I am using .NET routing to to that. In the Page_Load of the default.aspx page I check if the language in the Routing Collection is available, I don't redirect. If it is not available I redirect to (www._.com/en). Here is the code :
if (Page.RouteData.Values.Count == 0)
{
if (SessionManager.IsUserAuthenticated)
{
//Redirect To User HomePage for his Main Language
Page.Response.Redirect(UserManager.GetUserMainPageWhenLoggedIn(SessionManager.LoggedUser.LanguageID,true));
}
else
{
Page.Response.Redirect(String.Format("~/{0}", Cultures.en.ToString()), true);
Helpers.SetCulture(Cultures.en.ToString());
}
}
I am using Response.Redirect to do that. Now if I set to End The Response the method parameter, it will throw an exception so I can handle it throught
try
{
this.InitializeLayout();
}
catch (ThreadAbortException ex)
{
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
ExceptionManager.LogException(ex);
}
If I don't end the Response, the page will execute the whole lifecyle, redirect and then do it again which results a double execution of the page. My main objective is not to execute the page 2 times to minimize processing ( if the site gets hammered by a big traffic). If I end the Response, a ThreadAbortExeption will be thrown and I think this is not good for the site.( I can catch it and not log it).

I am getting the following error when I leave my web inactive for a while
"Response.Redirect.cannot be called in a Page callback."
I'm storing the user ids in session and during page load I check to see if the user id exists if not then I redirect them to the login page.
I am using devexpress controls, How can I get the redirect to work?

I need to call a page from itself, but adding an argument ?id=FixNulls (see below example)
[Code]....
This argument string is also sent to other pages, depending on the program state, which is why I want to use a querystring.
Why does the above code work when I and Redirecting to another page, but blow up when the Redirect is to the current page?
Can I use a querystring and redirect to call the current page?

I'm trying to convert a game I made (WindowsFormApplication) to an ASP.NET page.
My Problem is that I have a lot "private" variables in my WindowFormApplication and those variables are important for the game. But when after I Declare all my variables (in my Page_Load), they turn null no matter what I do(click a button, refresh the page).
Is there anyway to save my variables between buttons (other than Session, because I'd have to create like 6 more sessions)

How can I make a Response.Redirect open in a new page? I guess it would be the ASP.NET equivalent of <a href="page.aspx" target="_blank">click here</a>. I have a lot of code on an OnClick event handler and it redirects at the end of the code. It would make it very simple if there was a way to do it in ASP.NET.

I'm using 2010 to build a website application targets .net framework 4.
I use Response.Redirect(url) to transfer user to another page. All these redirect work fine when I debug. After I publish the website project to the sever. I visit that website on the server. All the redirects work fine but in one page.
In that page. I have a button control. when user click the button, he/she will be transferred to another page. So in the button_onclick event, I have:
Response.Redirect("~/WebPages/Benefit/CreateBenefitOpFields.aspx");
