.net - Setting Navigation For Membership Framework

Feb 20, 2011

I'm developing ASP.NET 4.0 Website using SQL server 2008 with Membership Framework. It runs fine so far with static navigation in my master page which uses static Web.SiteMap file to generate the Navigational Menu. I am wondering If there is any way to generate this file dynamically depending on the user's role or Identity.
I would also like to know If there is any way to store this setting in database using membership framework so that I dont have to present each and every links to all users or roles who is not authorized to see some of pages in website or any other way to generate menu at runtime.

Implementing Navigation Properties In Entity Framework?

Oct 1, 2010

I've been learning MVC 2 and I have pretty much everything understood except for the model part of things, I understand what the model is but actually implementing it has me confused.

Here's my situation, I have my DB which has 3 tables;

Ideas - table of ideas
Tags - table of tags
IdeaTag - link table connecting the above 2 tables via FKs

So when using the Entity Framework (.edmx) designer in VS2010 I get 2 classes created in the Designer, which obviously map to my DB tables and Navigation Properties in Idea for Tags & Idea for Tag.

So this is all fine until I actually try to add tags to an idea, what's the best practise for dealing with Navigation Properties? I wanted to add a Textbox which will then map to the Tags property in the Idea class but I'm unsure how I'd go about this.

Most of the MVC tutorials which discuss EF or Linq to SQL are quite basic.

Entity Framework. Updating EntityCollection Using Disconnected Objects Via Navigation Property?

Apr 22, 2010

I have a question, much liket this unanswered one. I'm trying to work with the entity framework, and having a tough time getting my foreign tables to update. I have something basically like this in the DB:

Incident (table):

-ID
-other fields

Responses (table):

-FK:Incident.ID
-other fields

And and entities that match:

Incident (entity)
-ID
-Other fields
-Responses (EntityCollection of Responses via navigation property)

Each Incident can have 0 or more responses.

In my Webpage, I have a form to allow the user to enter all the details of an Incident, including a list of responses. I can add everything to the database when a new Incident is created, however I'm having difficulty with editing the Incident.

When the page loads for edit, I populate the form and then store the responses in the viewstate. When the user changes the list of responses (adds one, deletes one or edits one). I store this back into the viewstate. Then when the user clicks the save button, I'd like to save the changes to the Incident and the Responses back to the DB. I cannot figure out how to get the responses from the detached viewstate into the Incident object so that they can be updated together.

Currently when the user clicks save, I'm getting the Incident to edit from the db, making changes to the Incident's fields and then saving it back to the DB. However I can't figure out how to have the detached list of responses from the viewstate attach to the Incident. I have tried the following without success:

Clearning the Incident.Responses collection and adding the ones from the viewstate back in:

Incident.Responses.Clear()
for each objResponse in Viewstate("Responses")
Incident.Responses.add(objResponse)
next
Creating an EntityCollection from my list and then assiging that to the Incident.Responses
Incident.Responses = EntityCollectionFromViewstateList
Iterating through the responses in Incident.Response and assigning the corresponding object from viewstate:
for each ObjResponse in Incident.Responses
objResponse = objCorrespondingModifedResonseFromViewState
Next

These all fail, I'd like to be able to merge the changes into the Inicdent object so that when the BLL calls SaveChanges on the changes to both the Incident and Responses will happen at the same time.

Entity Framework 4 - Check If Navigation Property Collection Is Empty, Without Include() Or Load()?

Sep 28, 2010

In an MVC view, I'm looking for a way to determine if a parent entity's collection of child entities is empty, so I can decide if I need to call a RenderPartial() or not.

For a one-to-one I've been using the following:

<% if (Model.Book.GenreReference.EntityKey != null) %>
{.....}

but I'm unsure how to do it in a one-to-many scenario, or if it can even be done without the use of Include() or Load().

C# - Setting Up Membership / Login Using Visual Web Developer?

And there seems to be a lot of information missing. It doesn't tell me how to upload the database to my server etc. I remember following this tutorial last year, and ran into numerous propblems, and a google search revealed THOUSANDS of people who've experienced the same problems.

I'm just so confused right now I don't even know what the hell to ask anymore. recommend a website other than MSDN (or possibly a different section on MSDN) where I can learn how to do this properly without a trillion roadblocks along the way?

Security :: Making Membership Data Available Through Entity Framework Or SQL?

Mar 17, 2011

I just began on using ASP.NET and MVC3 for a project, having only experience with PHP.

I understand that the default user data and roles are stored in another DB. Suppose I wish to perform SQL / LINQ queries on membership information, how do I go about doing it? I have just followed the MusicStore tutorial, so I am using Entity Framework as the ORM.

1. Is it possible to include membership data/role to be accessible through Entity Framework?

2. If not, how can I run usual SQL queries (or LINQ queries) on membership data?

Installation :: When Create A New Website In IIS And Its Associated Application Pool, Get The Option Of Setting The .NET Framework To 1.0 Or 2.0?

Jan 7, 2010

When I create a new website in IIS and its associated application pool, I get the option of setting the .NET framework to 1.0 or 2.0.Via windows updates I have installed versions 3.0 and 3.5..however these dont show up in the drop down list.I read that the aspnet_regiis -i command needs to be run in the installed .NET framework folder for it to be visible in IIS.However, the aspnet_regiis.exe is only present in the 1.0 and 2.0 folders. Can I use the same exe to register the 3.5 framework with IIS?

Security :: Built-in Membership Framework And Has Implemented Own Provider By Creating A Class That Inherits From MembershipProvider?

Jan 23, 2011

used the built-in Membership framework and has implemented his own provider by creating a class that inherits from MembershipProvider (found in System.Web.Security). I actually went ahead and created a custom provider which inherits from MembershipProvider. The problem is that there are several methods I do not really need. Also, the schema is totally different. Plus, most methods return a MembershipUser which means my User class has to inherit from it as well. So really, what benefits does the MembershipProvider and the whole Membership framework add to my system? Do these benefits justify the fact that I won't be using most of the methods on the class?

ADO.NET :: JSON Deserialize Into Entity Framework Object And Setting The DataMemberAttribute "Name="

Aug 24, 2010

I'm in the process of deserializing a JSON object into an Entity Framework object. The property names in the JSON do not match up totally with the property names in the Entity Framework Objects. What I'd like to do is set "Name=" on the "DataContractAttribute" for the table and the "DataMemberAttribute" for the properties in the Designer.cs file. I tried setting these in the Designer.cs file manually just to see if it would work - which it did (using JSON.Net) but of course when I went into the .edmx designer I lost all my changes. Is there a way to do this?

Web Services - Does The Server Timeout Setting Affect The Client Timeout Setting

Oct 15, 2010

I'm working with ASP.Net web services and am having a problem with a long-running process that takes about 5 minutes to complete, and it's timing out. To fix this, I was able to set the executionTimeout on the server's web.config to 10 minutes, and then set the .Timeout property on the Web Service object to approximately 9 minutes. Now, I'm worried that this may possibly cause some other web service calls to sit there for 10 minutes before they time out rather than the previous 90-100 seconds. I know the default on the client side is 100 seconds, but wasn't sure if updating the server's timeout setting would affect this.

Bottom line is - Is it safe to update the server's timeout setting to a long amount like 10 minutes, and rely on the default timeout on the client, or could this end up causing some problems?

Exporting Entity Framework 4 Data Model To Entity Framework 3.5?

Oct 25, 2010

Is there a way to export a EF 4.0 Data Model to EF 3.5?

I looked around and found that we are not able to access EF 4.0 from a ASP.Net 3.5 project here: [URL]

Our project is the 1st to go to .Net 4.0 using Entity Framework and we (the team) were wondering if there was a way for the other projects that "might" need to access our data that are still using the .Net 3.5 framework.
