I am taking a table (Articles) and grouping all the results by the key that references another table (ArticleSectionCategories). I then want to sort these results by the OrderBy field of the referenced table (ArticleSectionCategory.OrderBy). This is what I am using right now but it is not working.

sadly that doesnt do any sorting at all..it in fact errors with "The data source does not support server-side data paging."
It has been more than 2 days since I had started searching for the answer and I still don't know how to do it.
I have empty gridview that is filled with data depending of the parameters given. The gridview is used to track changes user had made to the database.
In the first dropdown list the user selects from which table (or all tables) to display the data. From the second dropdown list the user selects from which column (or all columns) of the previously selected table to display data. In the first textbox the user enters the search term and in the third and fourth textboxes the user enters the date range in which the changes occurred.
After clicking button the data within the given parameters should be displayed. The problem is that data is displayed fine, but I can't manage to get sorting and paging to work so if possible, give concrete answer because I'm pretty sure I googled one half of the web during these 2 days. :)

What is the recommended way to sort a GridView on columns related to other tables? I could build a custom datatable with the customername instead of the foreignkey and bind this column to the TemplateField. But then my huge dataset in the model makes no sense anymore.
EDIT: I have a model with a Dataset. I'm binding one Datatable(ERP_Charge) from it to my GridView(actually i take a Dataview from that Table). In this Datatable are columns that are related to other Datatables in the Dataset(relations are defined). When i want to make the grid sortable its no problem on the columns that belong to ERP_Charge.
But the columns with foreign keys to other table could not be sorted because the Gridview shows f.e. not the CustomerID but the Customername. I get the Customername in RowDataBound. Normally i would join the tables and add a Datacolumn for the Customername.
Is there a way of getting the current column being used to sort a table on an rdlc report ?I'd like a way of remembering how the user sorted the table so they dont have to reset it every time they open the form.I know I could make them use an on screen control (eg dropdown list) to change the sorting and then capture the choice as the report is loaded.But I'd rather do it in the background I can.

I have a user control with a datalist. I just want to do some simple binding but keep getting an object reference not set to an instance of an object error. The following is the code, I am sure I am just missing something simple:

When I debug, I see values for the formQuery; I am also able to loop through the formQuery and response.write a field out, however every time I try to bind it to a databound control, I get the Object reference not set to an instance of an object error.I initally was using a simple LinqDataSource object, but needed to set the where parameter to the FormTypeID property of this usercontrol. I had a Where condition defined on Page Init, but started getting the object reference error.

I have downloaded Visual Web Developer 2010 Express and am trying to use LINQ. In order to do that I have added a LINQ to SQL class to the web site and have dragged tables from the database view into the LINQ designer, which worked fine.But..When I add: using System.Data.Linq;to MainPage.xaml.cs, I receive an error:

I am really fed up with reviewing a good lot of web pages on how we can possibly customize the gridview to enable sorting and paging. So many sites have listed out a lot of information and so many guidances. But the problem is that one works out fine and the other is a burden. I really feel bad about being given the job of customizing this kind of a gridview which has no user friendly approach to it. Also, this control is rendered without the pager links inside the <tfoot> tag. I have tried the Pear Pager in php. It is that good and easy to use and compared to that, the gridview in asp.net is the worst ever control i have ever tried so far.

Kindly look into this type of requirement and firstly tell me whether this is possible with the gridview control. I would like this request even to be escalated to the designers of the gridview control also, so that Microsoft comes out with a reply THAT WORKS and not the kind of stuff like surfing through a lot of links and pages and finally wasting a lot of days precious time and still breaking the head with this useless control. I am building a website that have a number of dropdownlists. The user selects his/her choice and this is sent to a number of companies. Therefore the choice has to be changed to the corresponding value of the individual company i.e value 1 will be coverted to the corresponding value of "AB" for company "x". What way would be most efficent to achieve this. A database seems to be unefficent with the calls to the database. Would a 2-D array in a class be best?

I'm currently trying to work out the best way to build this web application, which will then be intergrated on other systems, such as WinForms, Intranets etc.
We hope to include the usual layers i.e. DAL, BLL, BOL and UI but I have been experimenting with Entity Framework 4 and WCF Data Services and managed to get something in place where I was using WCF as a gateway to EF4.
i.e. Adding a Service Reference to my project and then using the EF4 context and writing LINQ queries against the DB
e.g.[Code]....
Now with the current setup I would still need to write a DAL Class Library, that interacts with the Data Service, because as I said WCF Data Services only seems to be a gateway, I can't see where to put the code (above) in the Data Service and then how I could these methods.
My questions are: 1. How do I develop a WCF Data Service in such a way to allow this behaviour - I know how I could do it using ASMX web service, something like [Code]....
2. If I am to use WCF Data Services, how is serialization handled (if at all) - again I know how to do something in ASMX web services
3. Again, If I am to use WCF, how do I add Security and only allow my applications to access the web service - for obvious reasons
4. Would it be possible / logical to also include the Business Logic Layer into the web service?
