Basic question - is it possible to access the current Page from a static class in ASP.NET?

I am on .aspx page and i want to take the width and height of a control from a static class
where i have defined them as constans.
Is there any way to access that class directly from the aspx page?
I know that i can make a method like:
width="<%= getWidthSize() %>"
and inside the aspx.cs to define this method to take the size from that static class.
But i am asking if this could be directly managed from the web aspx page...?
Can I access a class instance declared on the master page from a content page?
View 4 RepliesI've read several other questions on this topic (here, here, and here), but have yet to see a great answer. I've developed my fair share of data access layers before and personally prefer to use instance classes instead of static classes. However, it is more of a personal preference (I like to test my business objects, and this approach makes mocking out the DAL easier). I have used static classes to access the database before, but I've always felt a little insecure in the appropriateness of such a design (especially in an ASP.NET environment).
Can anyone provide some good pros/cons with regards to these two approaches to developing data access classes with ADO.NET providers (no ORM), in an ASP.NET application in particular. Feel free to chime in if you have some more general static vs. instance class tips as well.
In particular, the issues I'm concerned about are:
Threading & concurrency
Scalability
Performance
Any other unknowns
Suppose we declare and define the variable in one class let say FirstClass and we want to use that variable in another class let say SecondClass which is outside of FirstClass .how to do this?
View 2 RepliesI am using <%# MyFormatClass(Eval("fieldname")) %> to display data in a grid view on my page. MyFormatClass works fine, but now I want to move it to a central location that can be used by many pages. When I try to access the class <%# Utils.MyFormatClass(Eval("fieldname")) %> it no longer works. Is this something we are allowed to do?
View 1 RepliesI have some confusion with singleton class, below are my some points:
1.Can singleton class have static method?,if yes then how we call that methods?
2.what is main difference between Static class and Singleton Class?
I have created my singleton class as follows:
[Code]....
In Above class structure I have created two method one is Static and second is non static, When I am trying to access Static Method it gives me compile time error.
How can I use static method of singleton class?
I have a private static field in my Controller class in an MVC web application.
I have a static method in that controller that assigns some value to that static field, I want to apply lock on that static field until some other instance method in the controller uses the value stored in the static field and then releases it.
DETAILS:
I have a controller named BaseController having a static ClientId field as follows and two methods as follows:-
public static string ClientId = "";
static void OnClientConnected(string clientId, ref Dictionary<string, object> list)
{
list.Add("a", "b");
// I want the ClientId to be locked here, so that it can not be accessed by other requests coming to the server and wait for ClientId to be released:-
BaseController.clientId = clientId;
}
public ActionResult Handler()
{
if (something)
{
// use the static ClientId here
}
// Release the ClientId here, so it can now be used by other web requests coming to the server.
return View();
}
my MasterPage I have a label that reflects the name of the module that the user is currently in. I change the label text accordingly using the following ..
private void ChangePageTitle(string PageTitle)
{
Label lblPageTitle = (Label)Master.FindControl("lblPageTitle");
lblPageTitle.Text = PageTitle;
}
Instead of placing this method in the code-behind of every page, I want to put it in a single class and call it accordingly. I thought of using a static class but do not know how to reference the MasterPage.Can I use a static class? or do I place the method in the code-behind of one page and call Object.Method from the other pages?
Is it safe to access asp.net session variables through static properties of a static object?Here is what I mean:
public static class SessionHelper
{
public static int Age
{
get
{
[code]...
Is it possible that userA could access userB's session data this way?
I have a logging class that, well, logs things. I would like to add the ability to automatically have the current page be logged with the messages. Is there a way to get the information I'm looking for?

View 2 RepliesI have a static method and need to get the Textbox text in it. But I get "An object reference is required for the non-static field, method, or property 'Members_ETC_Tab5.TextBox1' " when I use TextBox1.text in the static method so I modified my Method as below
[Code]....
but I see that txtBegin is null. How can this be fxed?
I have a question about C Sharp ASP.NET:Is there a difference (in code speed, resources) between:public static variable declared in public static class MyGlobals in a 'Code File' template;and the variable declared in a normal 'Class File' template;I use this variable in 2 different Class Files and also in _Default Page codebehind cs file.In fact in my case I need about 20 global variables of type List<string>.
View 9 RepliesThere seem to be a few issues in the way Razor views are designed and the code generated
1. Descendants of WebViewPage are forced to override Execute() (since it is abstract) but that method is never called. Why?
2. The virtual method ConfigurePage is never called in descendants that override this method.
3. CreatePageFromVirtualPath is no longer virtual. This was the one method that gave us access to the Layout Page (Master Page) instance. Now we no longer have this access. Why was this done?
How can one get access to the instance of a Layout page?
I have a .aspx page where i copied 1 navigation bar. On it i put some link buttons. They are navigating. But when I click it's class should become Active <li class="active">Home</li>. If i click on register link button then register's class should become active.
View 1 RepliesI have a class instance which is created by using Activator.CreateInstance() method. That class instance contains helper methods which are frequently used throughout the application. In order to avoid creating the instance multiple times, I'm just thinking about implementing an appropriate caching mechanism. The following consideration should be taken into account:
1) I can't use static class and methods.
2) There are around 6 instances (1 instance per class) per App Domain.
I have this specific task: I have a contacts table, and when users view a specific contact in details page I want to display a button in the page (doesn't matter anywhere, but inside the detailsview control next to the "edit" hyperlink is better), when it's clicked I want to grab all the info of this contact instance and write it to Response so user can save it through the save file dialog. So far I have two problems1. How do I access the contact? it's displaying on the page but when I tried detailsview.dataitem it returns null, e.result in the datasource selected event handler also returns null...2. I can get the button (outside the detailsview control) to trigger the file download dialog, but how do I achieve the same thing if the button is placed inside the details view which is in turn inside a updatepanel?
View 1 Repliesrecommend a data access class / helper class for Access databases, similar to the sqlhelper class found in the (Data Access Application Block)?
View 6 RepliesI am to access a method on my master page. I have an error label which I want to update based on error messages I get from my site.
public string ErrorText

}
How can I access this from my user control or classes that I set up?
Last night I wrote up my first IHttpModule to do some request processing. I'm using a regular expression to inspect the raw url. The IHttpModule will be called on every request, so it seems reasonable to do some sort of caching of the regular expression object to prevent creation of it on every request.
Now my question... what is better: use the HttpContext.Current.Cache to store the instantiated object or to use a private static Regex in my module?I'm looking forward to the reasons why. Just to clarify: the regex will never change and thus always be the same thing.
I have a div on my master page and I want to use it for showing page errors. I have an error display class and it works fine. My problem is that in some instances, the error gets displayed even before the tag resulting in (non)-display of the message. This is mostly with code that has response.redirect.
I want to counter this by having the error shown on a div within my master page.
How can I access <div id="errorSegment" runat="server">?
I have a static class with serveral static methods. In these methods, I'm trying to access the current thread's context using HttpContext.Current. For example:
var userName = HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name;
However, when I do that, I receive a NullReferenceException, the infamous "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
I am trying to do something such as:
<%= Class1.GetName %>
in my ASPX page, but my class1.vb can't work like this, I have to declare it first in the aspx page, how can I make my Class1.vb file be shared among the whole website?
Does anyone know how to access a Page Header (Me.Page.Header) from within a class?
