Accessing Silverlight Object Data From Aspx Page?
Jul 29, 2010
I am new to silverlight and I am wondering if it is possible to access silverlight object data from the aspx page that host it. Or have silverlight write to a hidden field on the page on client side.
What I am trying to do is to use silverlight to upload file via WCF (client to WCF Service directly instead of posting data back to the web server then forwarded to WCF service). When uploading a large file, user can still do some data entry etc. And once the upload is done have it write some data return by the WCF service to the aspx's hidden field and postback to the server on submit.

First, we are constrained to using an existing web framework that handles authentication and authorization. The web project uses forms authentication and writes to an encrypted cookie. The user information is exposed to the aspx pages as a property:
LoggedInUser.Current
This has several properties including the userId and role list.
I've looked at using initParams, but haven't been very successful there (edit: I couldn't do it dynamically originally). I've created a simple POCO entity with a [Key] attribute, but I need to at least be able to pass the userId from the aspx page to the imbedded silverlight.
What is the easiest way to pass a dynamic object from aspx to silverlight 4?
[Code]....
Then used Slugster's example to use the values on the Silverlight side.
Warning: Passing user information via init params exposes the info as plain text to the user viewing the page (they just have to view the source). We ended up using an authentication domain service and using the same user object as the aspx

We have a silverlight/asp.net application which communicates with WCF to fetch data. Now we are facing a problem where in the silverlight component is taking some time to initialize after the asp.net page life cycle is completed.We have tried tracing all the events and found that there is a time lapse between the aspx page unload event and silverlight initialize event. This we have tried with even a simple application (hello world) but still have found the same result.There is nearly 3-4 seconds delay i.e the silverlight component initialization starts 3-4 seconds after the page unload event ends.

I have an aspx masterpage that I would like to use in Sketchflow in ExpressionBlend as a Silverlight project. I am totally out of my comfort zone here and am not even sure how to ask this question. This masterpage has a Header and a Footer and the middle section will contain the Content - which will actually be Silverlight. Is there some easy method to bring the design (aspx) into Sketchflow to use?

I have an object on my asp.net page hosting a Silverlight xap (in my particular case it is in an IFrame, but I'm curious about regular objects as well). I can find the element in UI Spy, but the name just says "Silverlight Control". Trying to find that AutomationElement in my automated test is unsuccessful (control is null every time). Is there a setting in the Silverlight code or in the html that would help? How can I distinguish it if there are multiple Silverlight controls on the same page?
<object id="silverlightClient" style="display:none;" data="data:application/x-silverlight-2," type="application/x-silverlight-2">
<param name="source" value="../../ClientBin/SilverlightApplication.xap"/>
<param name="onerror" value="onSilverlightError" />
<param name="background" value="#00000000" />
<param name="minRuntimeVersion" value="4.0.41019.0" />
<param name="autoUpgrade" value="true" />
<param name="windowless" value="false" />
</object>
TreeWalker tw = new TreeWalker(new System.Windows.Automation.PropertyCondition(AutomationElement.NameProperty, "Silverlight Control));
AutomationElement control = tw.GetFirstChild(ancestor);

I am trying to hide or show a certain section of my table depending on the value of a property in my binding object(s).
public class Class1
{
public bool Display { get; set; }
}
In ASP.NET MVC, I can just do the following (assuming that Class1 is the model that binds to the page.)
<table>
<tr>Row 1</tr>
<tr>Row 2</tr>
<% if(Model.Display) { %>
<tr>Row 3</tr>
<tr>Row 4</tr>
<% } %>
</table>
How can I achieve the same behavior in transitional ASP.NET? That "Model" variable is not available. How do I retrieve the data binding object?

We have some code which is designed to build up a key/value pair of controls on a ASP.NET webforms page and their values. We use the "Controls" collection and recursion to build up this key/value pair.
The only issue is that ascx controls don't appear to come back in the "Controls" collection. Instead we get the controls on the ascx.
Something similar to the following code:
[Code]....
The subCtl is never a ascx control. Is there a way to get a list of the ascx controls on page or better still a different collection that contains both types?

I have an aspx page and I want to access an application on the client after seeking user permission. Both the windows application and the website are to be made in VB.NET.
EDIT: Here is the problem. From my .aspx webpage in vb.net, a visitor clicks on a link on my site, and if my winform is not already loaded on their desktop, it is then loaded with the users permission. This application should auto-load on the user's site at boot up time and always be in the background running. Make it an extremely thin client, taking the least cpu and bandwidth from the user, and running as a silent background process until needed.
Whenever the user visits one of my many websites, IN ANY BROWSER, somehow - the app running in the background communicates with the .aspx on one of my sites, and exchanges a silent username password identifying client winform app to the online .aspx app on my website.
Then the .aspx on my site PASSES a url such as "www.somewebsite.com" to the app running in the background, the background app then does a http request from the client's computer, not from my .aspx server, so the client's cookies and ip are visible to "www.somewebsite.com" server. The client collects the html for that page, stores it as a string, and also saves the ascii of that webpage as another string.
Both strings then are PASSED BACK to my .aspx website that the client is visiting, and the .aspx app then stores these results in a database.

In my global.asax I have url routing setup like below:
routes.MapPageRoute("User Logon", "{Vendor}/Logon", "~/Logon.aspx");
In the logon.aspx page, I have a script that "stylizes" the logon button:
<link href="jquery/css/flick/jquery-ui-1.8.1.custom.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<link href="images/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
<script src="jquery/js/jquery-1.4.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="jquery/js/jquery-ui-1.8.1.custom.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function () {
$('#<%= ButtonLogon.ClientID %>').button();
});
</script>
When I access the page us a url (in debug mode) http://localhost/logon.aspx?v=1 the page loads correctly and the jquery button command loads correctly. But then I access the page using the new url route, I get this error.
Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object expected

This is all the code I have,Goal: From the Edit page I want to drill backwards to the UserControl/DataList/DropDownList
'Geting the user control
Dim ctrl2 As UC_SiteTemplate2 = CType(Page.LoadControl("~/UC/SiteTemplate2.ascx"), UC_SiteTemplate2)
'accessing drop down list from user control
Dim xListNumber1 As DropDownList = New DropDownList()
