Adding ControlParameter To SqlDataSource Prevents Query And Databinding?

Nov 2, 2010

I have a SqlDataSource that calls a stored procedure and it works fine. If I add a <ControlParameter> tag to add an additional argument, then the query never fires and the databinding never occurs.

This works:

[Code]....

When I add the ControlParameter, the databinding no longer occurs:

[Code]....

The ControlParameter refers to a valid object on the page.

DataSource Controls :: Declaritively Set Value Of Sqldatasource Controlparameter Propertyname To An Expression?

Feb 4, 2011

I have this code in an .aspx file, within a sqldatasource control.

<asp:controlParameter
Name="WH"
ControlID="rblWH"
DefaultValue="DL"
Type="String"
Size="2"

Which currently uses a 2 character code from a radio button list as its value. It is used as a parameter for a stored procedure. Somewhere else on the page I have a combobox called cbTripPick with that 2 character code embedded within its text property. I wish to use that 2 character substring as the control parameter instead of the above. Can I do something like this ?

<asp:controlParameter
Name="WH"
ControlID="cbTripPick"
PropertyName = "some function or expression or eval that will give me the 2 char. value from the cbTripPick control"
DefaultValue="DL"
Type="String"
Size="2" />

Is it possible to declaratively set the propertyname to some dynamic expression which will get me what I want? Or should this all be done programmatically?

MVC :: Query Dialog: Modal:true Option Prevents The Dialog From Rendering?

Nov 16, 2010

I am using MVC2 on VS2010 Express edition. I followed a post by Dino Esposito on UI with JQuery passing data to a dialog from strongly typed views. I can't make the dialog work with modal:true option.Here I have a simple page that includes RenderPartial for a dialog. The dialog is supposed to pop up when a button is clicked. However, if I include modal:true as one of the dialog options, then when the button is clicked nothing happens. The dialog does not pop up. When I remove modal:true from the dialog options then dialog pops up as expected and closed as expected.

GridView SqlDatasource Programmatic Databinding Sorting?

Jan 27, 2010

I am databinding a SqlDatasource to a GridView in 2 different ways.

1) Declaring the SqlDatasource in the .aspx page and setting the DatasourceID property on the GridView to its id

2) Creating the SqlDatasource in the code behind and binding to the datasource property

When I use the declarative method (1), sorting works fine without any extra work on my part, but If I create the SqlDatasource in the code behind and try to sort, I get an exception saying 'The GridView 'myGridView' fired event Sorting which wasn't handled'.

I assume that there is some sort of extra plumbing that occurs when using the first method. Does anyone know what the datasourceid method does that the programmatic one doesn't? I would like to duplicate the logic in the code behind if possible.

DataSource Controls :: SqlDataSource And Parameters Query / Trying To Accomplish Is Building Dynamic Query

Aug 22, 2010

1. I have a GridView on my page and it uses sqldatasource with parameterized query. What I want to do is, on page load (where nothing has been selected so no parameter supplied), I want it to query everything (something like SELECT * FROM [this_table]) but since my SelectCommand is something like

SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE [this_column] = @someParameters AND [that_column] = @someParameters.

Can I play around with default value to achieve something like that but how ? Now, when the page loads, it doesn't show anything (No Gridview).

2. On my page, I made something like (username, gender, address, and more) and one single search button. That means, no single control enable auto postback. What I am trying to accomplish is building dynamic query

(if username specifed -> SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE [username] LIKE @username).

If both username and gender are specified (SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE [username] LIKE @username AND [gender] = @gender) and you know the rest. How can I do this using GridView and SqlDataSource ? To my knowledge, I can only specify one SELECT statement in a sqldatasource.

Databinding - ObjectDataSource Binding With ASP.NET Gridview Auto Adding Parameters?

Feb 16, 2010

I have a gridview databound to an objectdatasource. Everything worked great until I changed 2 columns from asp:BoundField to asp:TemplateField. These are the UPC column and the Part column. I wanted to show a link button for each of these fields that take the user to another page. Now asp.net expects these two fields to be parameters on the update store procedure. Why is this? How do I get it to not assume these columns need to be passed to the store procedure?

Here is the code for the grid view:

Databinding Multiple Tables Linq Query To Gridview?

Jun 3, 2010

how can I display a linq query in a gridview that has data from multiple tables AND allow the user to edit some of the fields or delete the data from a single table?

I'd like to do this with either a linqdatasource or a linq query. I'm aware I can set the e.Result to the query on the selecting event. I've also been able to build a custom databound control for displaying the linq relations (parent.child).

However, I'm not sure how I can make this work with delete? I'm thinking I may need to handle the delete event with custom code.

Web Forms :: DropDownList - Adding A ListItem In Addition To Using A SqlDataSource?

Jan 25, 2011

I have a question about adding a ListItem to a DropDownList that is being bound by a SqlDataSource.

My Intention is to be able to add an item with something like "0" as a value and "--- Choose Something---" as the item.

However, the control is filled using a SqlDataSource for the DataSource.

So, the question is:

Is it possible to insert the value "0" and item "--- Choose Something---" to the control even though the control has a datasource from the database?

SqlDataSource.ConnectionString = ConnectionString
SqlDataSource.SelectCommand = "MySprocName"
SqlDataSource.SelectCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.StoredProcedure
SqlDataSource.SelectParameters("Distance").DefaultValue = 25
SqlDataSource.SelectParameters("ZipCode").DefaultValue = "31410"
Dim arg As New DataSourceSelectArguments()
Dim dv As System.Data.DataView = DirectCast(SqlDataSource.[Select](arg), System.Data.DataView)

But if I use the following one, the gridview fails to load. The only way that this is different is it uses RTRIM and CAST on one of the fields:

I don't understand why this can be. If I try the statement exactly how it is in the query builder and run it it returns the rows no problem.

DataSource Controls :: Make Parametrized SqldataSource Query In C#?

My code in C# is:

Currently, I have long script which does major processing and then puts data into temp table.

Finally I read data from this temp table to show on the chart, based on user's selection of parameter. So I can divide my query into two parts and while I am researching this,

Is it possible to do processing in one Datasource and read table from second datasource?Is it even possible?

If not, what is recommended method for this (breaking large processing into small one)?

DataSource Controls :: SqlDataSource Query Not Using Index On Database Table?

Jan 20, 2011

I have this sqldatasource:

<asp:sqldatasource id="SqlDataSourceX" runat="server" connectionstring="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MyConn%>" providername="System.Data.SqlClient"
selectcommand="SELECT ItemNum, MIN(DateAdded) as [DateAdded]
FROM Items WITH (NOLOCK)
WHERE [DateAdded] between @DateFrom AND @DateTo

[Code]....

When I call select in codebehind, after 30sec it throws timeout expired SqlException:

[Code]....

again , this select took up to 3 sec to be executed. In application I tried to use SqlConnection and SqlTableAdapter instead of SqlDataSource, with the same query, and again it took up to 3 sec.

If I choose tighter interval (e.g '2011-01-20 00:00:00' - '2011-01-21 00:00:00') , there is no timeout exception, so I know that sqldatasource select is executed correctly. So the conclusion is that sql server is not using index while executing query sent from sqldatasource, but is using index whenever else. I have also checked the index statistics on sql server and it is like that. In profiler i can see slight difference between this two cases. As for SqlDataSource, in events table, in first column "EventClass" after 30 sec, there is this: "RPC:Completed" and application throws timeout. If i use SqlConnection and SqlTableAdapter then at the same place there is this: "SQL:BatchStarting" and "SQL:BatchCompleted" and application does not throws timeout(the index has been used).

what is so special on SqlDataSource connection, that Sql Server performs differently compared to other types of connections?

DataSource Controls :: Test The Performance Of When The Query Is Included Directly In The SqlDataSource?

Feb 16, 2011

I have a query that I want to test the performance of when the query is included directly in the SqlDataSource versus when I call a stored procedure. Does anyone have suggestions on how I would be able to closely watch the actual steps here? I was thinking of turning on tracing and adding Trace.Write for each of the events that fire along the way. This doesn't seem efficient and I wanted to see if there was a better approach.
