GridView SqlDatasource Programmatic Databinding Sorting?
Jan 27, 2010
I am databinding a SqlDatasource to a GridView in 2 different ways.
1) Declaring the SqlDatasource in the .aspx page and setting the DatasourceID property on the GridView to its id
2) Creating the SqlDatasource in the code behind and binding to the datasource property
When I use the declarative method (1), sorting works fine without any extra work on my part, but If I create the SqlDatasource in the code behind and try to sort, I get an exception saying 'The GridView 'myGridView' fired event Sorting which wasn't handled'.
I assume that there is some sort of extra plumbing that occurs when using the first method. Does anyone know what the datasourceid method does that the programmatic one doesn't? I would like to duplicate the logic in the code behind if possible.

I'm trying to extend the GridView control to enable sorting and paging for any situation.
When using my control I am fetching data from a database and filling a DataSet with it, then binding the GridView upon every page load. My first question would be, is this the correct approach?
To sort the GridView I am overriding the OnSorting method which stores the sort expression and direction in the ViewState, then creates a DataView and utalises the Sort method to sort the underlying data. It then sets the Data Source to this DataView and rebinds the GridView.
Paging is handled by OnPageIndexChanging which simply sets the PageIndex property and again rebinds the GridView.
My problem is; when any control causes a postback my GridView is no longer sorted, presumably because it is persistently rebound. If I don't rebind it then the GridView is empty on postback since the data isn't automatically stored in the ViewState. I have considered saving the data source in the ViewState but I would assume that this is bad practice for large amounts of data? - also DataViews are not seralisable.
The only solution I can think of currently is to override OnDataBound and sort the data every time. This results in a double sort when paging triggers a postback which seems inefficient. Code illustration of this below,
[Code]....
I'm looking for the cleanest 'best practice' solution as this is a learning exercise more than anything else.

I have a SqlDataSource that calls a stored procedure and it works fine. If I add a <ControlParameter> tag to add an additional argument, then the query never fires and the databinding never occurs.
This works:
[Code]....
When I add the ControlParameter, the databinding no longer occurs:
[Code]....
The ControlParameter refers to a valid object on the page.

Moderators Note: THIS ISSUE IS BIG FOR ME AND EVEN IF POSSIBLE, GET THE REPLY FROM THE DESIGNER OF GRIDVIEW. I have been looking for him for long. I am really fed up with reviewing a good lot of web pages on how we can possibly customize the gridview to enable sorting and paging. So many sites have listed out a lot of information and so many guidances. But the problem is that one works out fine and the other is a burden. I really feel bad about being given the job of customizing this kind of a gridview which has no user friendly approach to it. Also, this control is rendered without the pager links inside the <tfoot> tag. I have tried the Pear Pager in php. It is that good and easy to use and compared to that, the gridview in asp.net is the worst ever control i have ever tried so far.
1. i can use the images to indicate the sorting direction
2. I can have the custom pager like
[code]
<<Previous 1 2 3 .. 7 Next >>.
[/code]
When i click the next when i am viewing the page at 3 , the pager links should change as
[code]
<<Previous 2 3 4 .. 7 Next >>
[/code]
Kindly look into this type of requirement and firstly tell me whether this is possible with the gridview control. I would like this request even to be escalated to the designers of the gridview control also, so that Microsoft comes out with a reply THAT WORKS and not the kind of stuff like surfing through a lot of links and pages and finally wasting a lot of days precious time and still breaking the head with this useless control. I have spent a lot of time in searching for a perfect way. Not writing a code that is non-standard. I am really serious b'cos I have spent weeks in customizing this control. If I dont get a solid reply atleast now, I am going to generate all the output by HTML content by custom coding.

basically I had a repeater that i needed to be able to now update row by row. I thought the easiest way would be to replace with a datagrid.
Here is the code:
Code:
[code]....
If I take away the select filtering, I then get this error on rowdatabound
Unable to cast object of type 'System.Data.DataRowView' to type 'System.Data.DataRow'.

I currently have two roles like this:
[PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand,
Role="DomainAdmin")]
[PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand,
Role="DomainAnotherRole")]
The problem is that this inherited code is specific to the domain, and I want to eventually get the roles from the web.config file, so I can work on a VM not in the domain. have seen an example like this:
PrincipalPermission permCheck = new PrincipalPermission(
null,
@"DomainAdmin");
permCheck.Demand();
Since this throws an exception if user is not in role, how do I change this example to allow either of the two roles? I could use multiple IPrincipal.IsInRole() and then throw my own exception, but seems like there is probably a way to use the .Demand method with multiple roles. Update 12/21: Sample Code based on Union link from Ladislav's answer below:
PrincipalPermission ppAdmin = new PrincipalPermission(null, @"DomainAdmin");
PrincipalPermission ppAnother = new PrincipalPermission(null, @"DomainAnotherRole");
(ppAdmin.Union(ppAnother)).Demand();

I have a Web Forms app that uses forms authentication. I have a Crystal Reports Server 2008 V1 server with InfoView .NET installed and working. I have some Enterprise accounts setup. EDIT: I should mention that my Web Forms app is on a different server from Crystal Reports Server.
I need to know how to log on to InfoView .NET programmatically on my custom ASP .NET page (C#) and then transfer the user to InfoView without them having to type in the logon information.
Something like this would be nice (C#):
string username = "blah";
string password = "asdf";
// create logon token for crystal reports server
// .. // this is the code I need
Response.Redirect(url);
I did find this question, which gets me partway there, but it doesn't tell me how to pass the token to InfoView .NET. Some older docs also mention needing a cookie. I've also found other sites that show how to pass it to Java InfoView, but I need the .NET version.

I have advice that this might work for programmatically filling a set of literals from a set of object properties:-
[code]....
However, the line: ctl.Text = pageData.help(i).trim() fails because it's not understood that pageData.help(i) should translate to pageData.help1, pageData.help2, etc.

In a recent post, I expressed a need to access the properties for the body using declarative syntax, see
Contentplaceholder for replacing attributes?
But, the syntax confuses the editor which is not acceptable.
My hypothesis for a workable solution is to make the change in code. To derive a class from System.Web.UI.Page with extended functionality. However, I want for the designer to be able to still use declarative syntax to set the body tag.
I do not want to have to change any code in my aspx web pages except that they derive from base I want to be able to set these properties using declarative syntax, merely by adding a tag in the derived page I'm not immediately sure how to go about doing this because it doesn't exactly fit the OOP paradigm and I'm not sure where the changes need to be made.
I can use a findcontrol in the base to see if the placeholder has been added. But, not sure exactly at what point in the page processing lifecycle that I can use this findcontrol. I need to set the body before it renders but also be able to grab something from the declarative code.

I need to POST to an external HTTPS url from my application. I am looking for a 'robust' way to do this, in code if possible.
I would just like to use error handling etc, rather than just blinding doing the normal post and hoping it works.
Can you do HTTPS POST from some page event using server side code?

I need to perform some string manipulation to a columns contents in a GridView, and I'm using the DataBinding event for the template field for this. I'm converting all Environment.NewLine's to 's for outputting.
Here is the code:

It writes the correct, newly modified, string at the top - but why isn't it feeding back to the grid view?

I got a web page, it has a tabcontainer, within each tab, there will be a gridview, all the tabs and gridview are created at run-time, i have only one code, that I will loop through to create all those tabs and gridview. When I apply the sorting, and I click on the column name on any grid, it returned an error saying index was out of bound. BUT, when there is only ONE grid view created, it is working fine, I suspect it mixed up all the grid view's id and so on. But I have assigned different ID to gridview

I have a gridview in which I have two drop downs. One is populated with values that are static, so I have a regular sub that does that in the code behind. I tried to add code for databinding the other ddl to a datatable. I cannot get this to work. It just comes up empty. My asp code is fine, and the datatable definately has data in it - just nothing gets populated.
One other thing - the code for the static ddl has worked fine, but when I add this other block (either to the same sub as that, or dow the rowdatabound event) the static one doesn't work either.

how can I display a linq query in a gridview that has data from multiple tables AND allow the user to edit some of the fields or delete the data from a single table?
I'd like to do this with either a linqdatasource or a linq query. I'm aware I can set the e.Result to the query on the selecting event. I've also been able to build a custom databound control for displaying the linq relations (parent.child).
However, I'm not sure how I can make this work with delete? I'm thinking I may need to handle the delete event with custom code.

I have a gridview databound to an objectdatasource. Everything worked great until I changed 2 columns from asp:BoundField to asp:TemplateField. These are the UPC column and the Part column. I wanted to show a link button for each of these fields that take the user to another page. Now asp.net expects these two fields to be parameters on the update store procedure. Why is this? How do I get it to not assume these columns need to be passed to the store procedure?
Here is the code for the grid view:
