Any ORMs That Easily Support Access To Raw Table Schema?

May 31, 2010

I work with a ASP.NET UI framework that pulls fields for a particular screen off a database. These fields can be associated with particular data fields in another database for binding. The idea with this setup is that if a client needs a new column on a table, they can easily add it, and create a UI field that binds to it without any sort of application restart or recompile.

The problem I've always had with this is that it has meant I'm always having to work with untyped datasets in my code. Are there any ORM libraries for .NET out there that could easily accommodate the requirement of being able to access arbitrary columns in the table schema over and above ones mapped to strongly typed fields?

Security :: Secure Images From Being Easily Access?

Feb 8, 2010

I have read that the best way to secure images from being access would be to place them into a database rather than into a file system or virtual directory. Is this correct? I am creating a site that needs to have the images the user upload be secure as possible. I initially programmed the images to be uploaded to a database then I reprogram the site to have them store in to a file system/virtual directory. I'm still up in the air in terms of which one to use. Again, security is my primary concern.

Architecture :: Keeping Information In Memory That Any User Can Access Easily?

Mar 20, 2010

I want to read some information from an xml file and store it ready in memory so that it can go out with every page response without being reloaded from the xml on every request.

What is the best way of doing this?

It looks to me like there are 2 options. Either create a class with static fields that the information is stored in. Or create a class with public fields that the info is stored in and create an instance of that class at application level.

Is that correct, are both of those options viable? or will I not be able to access the fields in the second method without creating an instance of the class in the code that responds to the page request(basically if you create an instance of a class at application level can you use that instance from within code anywhere in your website as long as it is public)?

Access :: Reading Data From Access With A Linked Table (pointing To A Access Table On Another Location?

Sep 7, 2010

Here's a short explanation of my asp.net project.

1) the default page loads, it will read the Windows Login of the user opening the page.
2) I'll check if this login exists in a table stored on the webserver.

In this Access Database, there's a 2nd linked table, pointing to another access table on a network location. Now, I want to read data from this linked table. However, at this moment I receive an error:

"The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '\<ip><shared-folder>statistics.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data".

Some extra info:

- The network folder has read and write permissions for everyone

- the user and group permissions on both access files are set to read/modify/administer for the Admin user (on the tables I want to read from)

- IIS authentication on the server is set to "Windows Authentication" (this is needed so I can read the Windows Login from the user). All other authentication modes are disables (like anonymous, ...)

- When the error occurs, no other program or process has access to the statistics.mdb (so, it can't be locked by someone else)

- the web.config files access connection string looks like:
<add name="AccessConnectionString" connectionString="Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=\<IP><shared-folder>statistics.mdb;User Id=admin; Password=;" />

Like I said before, in this statistics.mdb file, there are 2 tables. One normal table, and another linked table (pointing to a network location)

Searching for solutions, I discovered the following:

- if I don't use linked tables, everything works fine (however, I have to use this linked table)

- even if I connect directly to the table in the network I receive the error. So, I'm pretty sure I don't have sufficient rights to read from this table.

I read that not the Admin user is opening the file, but actually a user called ASP.NET. This user doesn't have the correct rights to do this. However, I'm not sure if this is true.

Generating Entity Class Files From Table Schema?

Jul 1, 2010

I am using LINQ to SQL with C#. Is there a method through which we can generate entity class files from the table schema? By dragging tables onto the graphical designer classes are generated but they are not the real class files(i mean actual files with the extension cs).

I am aware of that we can code the class files first and then create the schema manually or programmatically, but i wanted to know if the reverse is possible, may be using some third-party tools. I feel it will be very convenient to use LINQ that way.

Entity Framework 4 - Update Database Schema From Model. Without Wiping The Table Data?

Jun 29, 2010

I'm working on a new project where I have the luxury of working from a Model to Database approach using Entity Framework 4.

The project I'm working on is taking an agile approach where different phases will be rolled out over time.

Will the Model First approach work in my case? I noticed when you "Generate Database from Model" it recreates the entire schema from scratch which will obviously wipe all the data that is in the db. I was hoping for a more "Update Database from Model" approach where the db would just be altered to reflect the changes rather than recreated

ADO.NET :: Managing TypedDataSets When There Is A Change In Backend Table / Stored Procedure / Database Schema

Sep 15, 2010

if there is any easier way to synchronize the TypedDataSets with the chages made to backend Table / Stored Procedure schema. I use Typed DataSets in my project extensively and I found them very useful and easier to code, but difficult to maintain

The difficuly I have always faced is whenever there is a change in a backend database table structure or stored procedure that is linked to any of the Typed DataSet in our project requires to recreate whole DataSet again by scrapping the old one. The backend changes will not be reflected unless and untill you recreate the whole stuff again.

Is there any easier way to synchronize those typed datasets with the changes made to backend database schema or any other workaround that will not required to recreate the whole DataSet again.

The "System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider" Requires A Database Schema Compatible With Schema Version 1

Jul 20, 2010

I have a SQL Server 2008 DB with many tables filled with data and I used SQL Server Management Studio to generate a SQL dump by using the Script Wizard : Tasks -> Generate Scripts -> Script All objects in the selected database and also selecting the option to Script Data. I made sure to change the value of "Script for Server Version" to "SQL Server 2008". Then I created a new DB and ran the SQL dump on the new DB to generate an identical copy of the old DB. Then I assigned permissions to my default user to the new DB. Then I changed the connection string on my ASP.NET application to use the new DB. But when I run it, it throws the following exception -

Server Error in '/myapp' Application. The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' requires a database schema compatible with schema version '1'. However, the current database schema is not compatible with this version. C# - SQlite / Firebird - Support Multiple Concurrent Write Access?

May 19, 2010

I currently store ASP.net application data in XML files. Now the problem is I have asynchronous operations, which means I ran into the problem of simultanous write access on a XML file... Now, I'm considering moving to an embedded database to solve the issue. I'm currently considering SQlite and embeddable Firebird. I'm not sure however if SQlite or Firebird can handle multiple concurrent write access. And I certainly don't want the same problem again. Anybody knows? SQlite certainly is better known, but which one is better - SQlite or Firebird ? I tend to say Firebird, but I don't really know. No MS-Access or MS-SQL-express recommodations please, I'm a sane person.

Web Forms :: How To Import Exsisting SQL Server Table To Access Table(new Table)

Dec 10, 2010

my main intention is that, the exsisting table of sql server database(.dbo) with 1000's of records, that should be import to a new access database table(.mdb).for example if we want to had a new table in db2, of exsisting table in db1 with some conditions by using "select * into New_Tabel from (select * from Exsisting_Table where <Condition>) as objectName". Here the new table is created and records inserted in one execution in db2. The same work should be done for access(sqlserver db --> Access db). Here the new access database table with given name (as string_sysdate) must be created dynamically by clicking a button (multiples time creating new table). Is there any query or c# code for sql server database to access database.

SQL Reporting :: Connecting To Database - Error "Could Not Retrieve Schema Information For Table Or View"

Jun 3, 2010

Well it's finally time to stop ignoring my unit's need for reports. I keep coming to dead ends. I gave up the crystal reports idea, and ssrs seems a little easier. Now the problem is that I'm creating a report locally on my laptop, then will change the connection string, upload it to my server and have it run against an identical database on the server.

I'm using SQL Server Express locally, and when I try to create a dataset (using the wizard), I can see the tables, but when I try to add one, I get an error message "Could not retrieve schema information for table or view". I looked up this error and there isn't much useful info on it. I guess it some bug when trying to use SS Express? Is there a work around for this? Can I create the report programmatically? Should I use a different kind of reporting service?
