Architecture :: Creating A Comments Page For Users To Review And Comment On An Article?
Dec 12, 2010I am trying to create a comments page for users to review and comment on an article. I have 2 buttons on each comments posted by users; "Like" and "Don't Like". I am stuck with how to track which user voted already for a given comment. I am thinking of two options and would like to know if they are they way to go or is there a better solution.
Option 1: I have created a table in my database with stores, the comment id, the userid of the user who rated it and the value "like" or "don't like". So each time I have to query my table to find out if this user indeed vote for a given comment. The table unfortunately grows exponentially!!
Option 2: I store the commentid, userid, and "like" or "don't like" value in a cookie on the client's machine. I read the cookie and find out if the user has already voted on a comment. This is proving to be VERY quirky with cookie expiration, growing cookie size and also multiple users on the same machine.
In either way, my test case of ~1500 users, and 2 Million comments, this is getting to be HEAVY on both methods. Is there anything better?

Would I record their ip address (which is not static) or computer name?

JQuery $.get Refreshing Page Instead Of Providing Data?
Jan 19, 2010I have written some code using jQuery to use Ajax to get data from another WebForm, and it works fine. I'm copying the code to another project, but it won't work properly. When a class member is clicked, it will give me the ProductID that I have concatenated onto the input ID, but it never alerts the data from the $.get. The test page (/Products/Ajax/Default.aspx) that I have set up simply returns the text "TESTING...". I installed Web Development Helper in IE, and it shows that the request is getting to the test page and that the status is 200 with my correct return text. However, jQuery refreshes my calling page before it will ever show me the data that I'm asking for. Below are the code snippets from my page.Please let me know if there are other code blocks that you need to see.

create an event, make it public while on our (external) website give the user a dialog (fb:multi-friend-selector) to select their friends to invite to the event
It's established the new Graph API can't be used (http://bugs.developers.facebook.net/show_bug.cgi?id=10070), but the documentation for the REST API (http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/rest/events.invite) implies that it's not possible to invite users to existing events.
provide any clarity on this I'd be grateful - reading the vague and contradictory facebook documentation is getting me nowhere.
Specifically, who/where/how should the event be created? - and how can I then invite users to that event from an external website?

Aug 19, 2010I spent the better part of today hunting down an elusive error. I was getting a message saying that it couldn't find the Index view for the Home controller, and it gave a list of locations it searched, e.g., ~/Views/Home/Index.aspx. This was really confusing as the file definitely existing and was at ~/Views/Home/Index.aspx, the first place in the list of locations it searched for the view!
What I eventually discovered was that there was a file that did not get published when I used Visual Studio's "Publish" feature (this is on the "Build" menu). That file was Views/Home/Home.master, and (as you can probably guess) is the master file used by Views/Home/Index.aspx. Once I copied that file into place manually, it started working. But I am left wondering--why??? Why does this file not get published? It's a part of my project, I can see it in the solution explorer, and it's obviously a critical file that's necessary for the MVC app to run. It has the same permissions as every other file in my project. So why wouldn't it get copied? And how can I fix it so it does get copied?
