I am trying to figure out what are the basic assemblies required to run a basic ASP.NET 4.0 website. Say.. a website with just a label in it. I looked online and didn't find a list there. I know installing the framework 4.0 will give me all the dlls but I just need the basic ones that will make a basic site work on ASP.NET 4.0.

How do I capture other events in an asp.net textbox on a webpage in more of a way in which a windows app does? For example, if I want to handle when someone just presses a key (keydown) on a textbox in a webpage?
The functionality that we want to create breaks down like this:
We want to create a "smart" search box at the top of our page. When the user starts typing, a little panel or some element should become visible and it will have some check boxes on it. They can search for one or many different types of searches: First Name, Last Name, Business Name, ZIP, Customer Number, and Contact Info. As they begin typing their search, we need it to execute some code that attempts to figure out exactly what they are searching. So if it can tell they are typing in alphabetic characters and not numbers, then we know to NOT check the Customer Number box, but we will want to check the First Name, Last Name, and Business Name boxes. If they start typing a number, we know that we can check the Customer Number box and leave the First Name and Last Name, etc boxes unchecked. If they type a number that is 5 digits, then we know to check the ZIP and Customer Numbers both. Any other length number characters and the ZIP will be unchecked. And any other rules like these that we might want to implement in the future. The idea here is we will almost always be able to tell what someone is searching, but the user can always check any box that they want to search for if they so choose. For example, if a business is named "123 Plumbing Company" and they just want to search the Business Name field for a number, they can over ride it and do that. Otherwise, they just can blindly type their search and hit enter and the program will usually know what kind of search they are trying to do.
I come from a strong windows app development background and have just recently tried to do some web development professionally. A quick few sentences on what philosophy I am missing out on as far as a more robust and "Windows App-like" webpage would be appreciated if anyone wants to coach me on that area and point me in the right direction!
Also, in my example we are using master pages. So if you can imagine a typical master page that has a logo top left and a search box and button top right, then you can picture what we have. Its simple looking. But with the content page being a separate aspx page, we are having trouble referencing it after a search is performed anyway. So what I mean by all this is The masterpage.master has a search textbox. They type something, hit enter. We then want a gridview that is on our default.aspx page to update with the results of the event that was fired from the masterpage.master.
My windows app background tells me to just point to it like I would from two different forms. Like if I had a form1 with a search box on it and I wanted it to show up the results on form2, I would just say Form2.Show: Form2.GridView = whatever.
Of course, with my confusion of what the scope of these asp.net pages is, I am having a difficult time just visualizing everything and how they are inter-related.
So I guess to recap here:
1) How do I tap into more events with textboxes or any other asp.net control. Is the answer AJAX? If so, can you elaborate just a little bit?
2) How would I use the keypress or keydown type of event to make a panel or some kind of content holder to become visible when the textbox gets focus from the cursor and go back to being invisible if it loses focus.
3) What about the scope in which asp.net pages behave?
I have a series of collapsible panel extenders on my page and each time the page opens or postsback the panels open for a time and then close. Is there a way to prevent this?

For Example: User input 2:00pm Eastern Time on my server I have different time zone, how to calculate the time and send the email at users time-zone. Its a web application. I have a page and on button click event, we executing the stored procedure (calculation process) .
It has to process for the large data, so it will get more time to execute.
at the end of the SP i am executing the another SP which is also process for large data.
so 2 SP's running on the button click. when i click the button it taking too much time for executing and return timeout error.
if the record is less in the table then getting result properly. now i want to split the event to execute the 2 SP's saparetely.
but the user will click the button at one time only. at that time i want to execute the SP1 and respond to the user back, Show some processing message to the user and automatically call the SP2 in the same event.
how to do this in c#.

I have a quiz application in which i am adding from date and to date. If the todate expires then that quiz will not come from the database. Now i want the timer also with the todate.
For example - fromdate is 1/6/2011 and todate is 6/6/2011. I am using DateTime object for these fromdate and todate. In between these dates i have 4 quizes. I want to set times for these four quizes so that they will expire when the timer time is over.

View 13 RepliesI am a newbie and have designed a website using ASP .Net 2.0 with C# 2005. On the home page I am displaying rates of a few items which gets updated every 15 minutes. The new rates are entered through a different web page into a SQL Table and I am using Page Refresh of the home page to update the rates every 15 minutes. Everything is working ok upto this. But now I have to display a countdown timer of time remaining for the next update on the home page. I am totally clueless as how to approach the problem.

the site opens but the text doesnt scroll
I have a big form in which i have almost 10 update panels. some are having updatemode = conditional and others are always. Now by default when that page is opened i only show one dropdownlist.When that project dropdownlist (from which i populate the rest of the elements in my page) value is changed by user it takes long time to load the other elements. Also the other gridview which is also surrounded by update panel and mode in conditional takes long time to show edititemtemplate controls in edit mode.
I am unable to trace the reason behing delay. Few days ago it was working fine and fast but now it is slow.
Suddenly all update panels in my website became unknown elements. They work fine when I run site.
But:
no intellisense in update panel (no properties appear, no tags, like "triggers")
no ID property when I drag updatepanel from toolbox
VS says that I check if webconfig contains reference to System.Web.Extensions
But I have this reference already.
I cannot use asyncFileUpload as it has too many restrictions which doesn't meet our requirement.
I'm able to add a updatepanel trigger to force the Button1 to perform a postback. after the file uploaded, I need to use a timer to do different tasks and return messages back to client with the timer. That is all fine.
However, when one upload is finished. I try to do it again. The FileUpload1.HasFile is "false". I don't know why. if I remove the timer, at the second time, the HasFile is "true". I think there must be something in the timer and disable the Button1's postback.

I am querying the SQL database table and returning the result on the webform with a repeater, but I need to display one record at a time and refresh with an update panel and timer to iterate through the rows of the table one at a time at a fixed interval.
Is there another solution to be able to display one record at a time using c# in the webform, but then cycke through the other records one at a time using a timer control and updatepanel?
I need to do to the following:
Find if the current time falls within hourly ranges and display the start hour and end hour of that range in labels.
Examples:
If the current time is 8:46am, label startTime would return "8am" and label endTime would return "9am"
If the current time is 10:01pm, label startTime returns "10pm" and label endTime returns "11pm"
If the current time is 12:59am, label startTime returns "12am" and label endTime returns "1am"

In punched time the first one should be IN and second OUT. A employee would have punched several time a day. Based on that I should take maximum punches and bring that of columns as IN and OUT in gridvew dynamically. How to achieve this?
I'm having an issue working out how to implement this time based event. Basically, my program needs to send out an email at 12AM monday morning. But the email needs to go based on the user's local time not 12AM server time.
the problem i have discovered is Daylight savings. I used current server time as 12:00AM (my local time) and my actual offset is -7:00 UTC but after the calculation i get -6:00 utc because of daylight savings. If a user was in -7:00UTC then he/she will not get the email at 12am localtime but an hour late.
This is my first experience with themes.I've created a skin file for a textbox and the defined theme is only visible at runtime.Is this the way theme works or I am missing something?
