Code Versus Database - Sequence Of Steps, Call Database Or Check Session Object?
Aug 3, 2010
I have several web sequential pages which will modify a record and its child records in the database, called a "project". Such a project is currently passed between pages using its database ID in the URL parameters.
A project has some information specific to itself, and also consists of one or more Tasks, which each have information specific to itself.
Is it faster (alternatively, more maintainable or more easily understood) to hit the database each time I need to query the same project (and its tasks), or should I query the database once (either once for each page or once for all pages and save to Session) and check the saved object rather than the database?

I'm working with an asp.net application that stores most data in a database and not session. I'm wondering of the pros and cons of each and which is the better way to go. For example, you have a pretty busy site and instead of storing user specific variables in session, there is a DB table called user data and it can store all user specific data that can be accessed from any page by querying the database. Which is the better way to go, session or database?

1. I know about collections but I dont remember the precess. I know you drag a sqldatasource control on the form(Select everything in the database ie. selct *) and then delete it. But how do I use it i code.
Example. I need to select services where country=canada from the Agencies table.
2. I know how to manually pull data from an access database using the code below. I want to know how to pull data from a sql database just like the one below.
3. explain the difference between Collections and manually pulling it like the one bellow?
<code>
<script>
Stringpath = Server.Mappath = Server. MapPath(/website");
String connStr = Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" +"DataSource="+path+
\Database;
OleDBConnnection conn = new OleDBConnection(connStr);
conn.open();
OleDbCommand cmd= new OleDBCommand();
cmd.COnnection = conn;
cmdCommandText = "Select * From [Suppliers];
OledbDataReader dr= cmd.ExecuteReader();
Response.write(dr.getvalue(1);

Is there a difference between Session.Clear() and Session.RemoveAll()? The descriptions and documentation pages seem to say exactly the same thing, but I am assuming there must be some reason for creating two functions, right?

I have a CreateUserWizard with three Wizard steps and one CreateUserWizardStep. The first two are accessible from the code behind by ID. The third and fourth are not! If I comment out the references to these two steps in the code behind the page runs fine. I have triple checked the variable names and everything is fine. Everything that should have a runat="server" does, everything is enabled, all of that good stuff.
why some steps in the same CreateUserWizard may not be visible from the code behind and others are?

In my ASP.Net application, I am using ajax accordian control on my aspx page and vb.net for code behind pages.
I have used validation summary for page validation.
1st accordian Pane contains following fields:
First Name
Last Name etc.
2nd accordian Pane contain following fields:
Address
City
Country etc.
while validating the page It displays error messages in following sequence:
Address cannot be blank
City cannot be blank
Country.....
First Name....
Last Name....
But I want to display error messages in following order:
First Name cannot be blank
Last Name....
Address cannot be blank
City cannot be blank
Country.....
I tried to resolve it by giving tabIndex to textboxes and RequiredFieldValidator, but sequence doesn't change I created RequiredFieldValidator again in sequence, but it doesn't affect.

Im building a image gallery which reads file from disk, create thumbnails on the fly and present them to the user. This works good, except the processing takes a bit time.
I then decided to cache the processed images using the ASP .NET Application Cache. When a image is processed I add the byte[] stream to the cache. As far as I know this is beeing saved into the system memory. And this is working perfect, the loading of the page is much faster.
My question is if there are thousands of images which gets cached in the Application Cache, will that affect the server performance in any way?

I've seen this done a few times in C# but I'm afraid my knowledg doesn't extend into converting this to vb.net. I'm simply looking to examine a checkboxlist and then send the checked values to a database table. It's the actual inserting into the database that i'm not sure what to do with.
Here is some code...
VBNET Code:
Protected Sub InsertButton_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
Dim ckbox As ListItem
Dim ckboxlist As CheckBoxList
Dim profile_id_int As TextBox
ckboxlist = CType(Me.FormView1.FindControl("Checkboxlist1"), CheckBoxList)
profile_id_int = CType(Me.FormView1.FindControl("staff_payroll_int"), TextBox)
For Each ckbox In ckboxlist.Items
If ckbox.Selected = True Then
'insert record in profile_skill_link table
Try
'Create a New Connection for the Stored Procedure
Dim myConnection As New Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(Me.SqlDataSource3.ConnectionString)
Dim mysql As String
myConnection.Open()
mysql = "Insert into staff_profile_string_link(staff_profile_int, skill_id_int) values('" + ckboxlist.SelectedItem.Text + "','" + id_int.Text + "';)"
'MsgBox(mysql)
'insert into database here
Catch ex As Exception
Response.Redirect("~/GenericErrorPage.aspx", False)
End Try
End If
Next
End Sub

topic - topicid (pk),sub, message (content), catid(fk), createdby, createddate, updatedby, updatedon, viewers( count of views)
post - postid(pk), topicid(fk), post (content), createdby, createddate, updatedby, updatedon.
As i told in my last post, I am designing a forums website. I am not able to design the query to retrieve the topics for a category for example say catid=1. I want to display it in a grid view as done in every forums.
I made some query :
SELECT Topic.Sub, Topic.CreatedBy,COUNT(Topic.viewers) from topic where catid=1
group by Topic.Sub,Topic.CreatedBy
This is for retrieving the topic name from the subject and the createdby giving the topic starter and the total no. of views of that topic.
Now i want to make a query from the post table displaying the last post in the topic and if the post does not exist, i want to display the 1st post from the topic table as the last post done.

I was wondering why you would still use ASP over Silverlight, since with silverlight there is a lot you can do already. And you dont have to use css, jquery, js, html, etc.
Also with silverlight you can do a call to the database via ria service.
I can only think of 1 reason which is, that not every one has the plugin installed. But thats just a matter of time.

I have a view in ASP.NET MVC. It takes the model object and iterates over a list of strings and displays them in a table row, like so:
Details
<table>
<tbody>
<tr>
<th>Values in the database</th>
</tr>
<% foreach (string value in Model.lstDistinctValues)
{%>
<tr>
<%=value%>
<%} %>
</tr>
</tbody>
The problem is that the values appear ABOVE the header. So 'Values in the database' appears at the bottom, while the values are at the top.

I have a form with x fields on - its a signup form on a web page. I use standard validation controls which I use for validating on both client and server side, however I have an additional requirement I don't think is covered by the standard controls. When a user enters an email address and press enter, I validate that the address is not already in the database, by calling a stored procedure. This works fine but it would be great to validate it client side as with all the other entry fields.
I wouldn't know where to start with javascript so I have come up with the following solution. I have put a ontextchanged event on the email textbox and set to autopostback. When the user navigates away from the textbox validation is called and this seems to work ok. My question is have I missed something, and is there an easier soluyion using validation controls or is this an appropriate solution to the problem?

So here is the requirement. It is similar to autocomplete but if not exactly liek it. If someone has used MS Outlook, when we want to search for a particular mail id starting from S*@*, in it we use a CTRL+K option to search. I have a similar need to search in a textbox binded to SQL dadatbase.

I have a SQL database that creates a record for every document uploaded by the user to the server. I want to check this table before a user uploads a document to ensure they don't upload a file with name that already exists.
I know how to make the connection and make the SqlCommand to query the table for an existing record. But I don't know how to check the record count from the sqlCommand I made.
Does that make sense?
Using myConnectionCheck As New SqlConnection(myConnectionStringCheck)
Dim myCommandCheck As New SqlCommand()
myCommandCheck.Connection = myConnectionCheck
myCommandCheck.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM Req_Docs WHERE Doc_Name =" & DocName
myConnectionCheck.Open()
myCommandCheck.ExecuteNonQuery()
End Using

I'm trying to put a registration page together in Visual Web Designer.
I would like to send a confirmation Email after someone is leaving his registration data and pressing the INSERT button.
The key fields in my database are: Email, Name, Surname, Address
Before I send the confirmation Email I would like to check if the email value entered in the form is realy added to the database.
I was copy past already some C code in my page, therefore it will be fine if the code can be in C.
- checking if record is realy added to database after pressing INSERT button
- setup the confirmation Email
