Storing User Variables In Database Versus Session In C#
Jul 28, 2010
I'm working with an asp.net application that stores most data in a database and not session. I'm wondering of the pros and cons of each and which is the better way to go. For example, you have a pretty busy site and instead of storing user specific variables in session, there is a DB table called user data and it can store all user specific data that can be accessed from any page by querying the database. Which is the better way to go, session or database?

I've read that you can store classes directly into a session variable i.e.
Session["var"] = myclass;
My question is how the memory management works. Does it automatically serialize this into the session on the client side?
Or does it hold the data for the instance of the class in server memory, and just holds a reference in the session object?

I have several web sequential pages which will modify a record and its child records in the database, called a "project". Such a project is currently passed between pages using its database ID in the URL parameters.
A project has some information specific to itself, and also consists of one or more Tasks, which each have information specific to itself.
Is it faster (alternatively, more maintainable or more easily understood) to hit the database each time I need to query the same project (and its tasks), or should I query the database once (either once for each page or once for all pages and save to Session) and check the saved object rather than the database?

I have this code in javascript: var x = e.mapX; It gets the X-coordinate of a map. What I want to do is that I want to store this into a c# variable. I have a class named Test with an integer property X. I want to store var x into X. In the codebehind, I have this on the Page_Load: Test test = new Test(); Then I am trying this on the javascript code: var x = e.mapX;

When a use is logged in (Through open-id) we are creating a session variable named "UID" and storing the unique user-id in it. Later we are checking the session to see if the user is logged in. I think this is not the right way, but I could not force the team to change this, as I cannot show how this implementation can be cracked. why (If yes) this implementation is bad?

i m developing an application in .NET mvc2. i m using aspnetMembershipProvider for User registration and related activities. i need some custom information about user that i stored in a separate table (sysUser for example) and linked it to aspnetUser table through foreign key. after Login i need to fetch user's credentials from sysUser table and push it to the session. For this Account controller's Logon method seemed best to me and i pasted following code in my Logon ActionResult
[Code]....
The code is working perfectly for me and put my desired information in the session but the thing is that if a user selects Remember me and on his next visit he won't have to Log in and i would not find my desired information in the Session. where should i put my code that stores the user information in the session.

When I first implemented forms authentication I consulted an article that told me to store the user's custom IPrincipal object in the cache. Is this wrong? Should I have stored it in the session?

I am looking to retrieve data from a database and assign those values to class objects which in turn will be turned into session variables. I am using an object datasource to retrieve the data from the database but I cannot find anywhere that shows how to assign these values to variables. The data is returned in a dataset. There is the added problem that there will be mulitple items returned which will have to be assigned to different arraylists of objects based on the a primary key in the database.

I would like a situation where there are three textbox available and this would give the user an opportunity to input a value in the textboxes. The value in the textboxes would then be stored in a database table(the table is already created in sql). Furthermore, the value would be able to be reterieved later on when the user presses another button. A sample code will help.

I've begun building a bit of a framework that I wouldnt mind working with. The idea is to create a framework that makes it even easier to create CMS addons (So basically a CMS framework).
One of my goals with this project, was having all modules made within the framework automatically support version without any extra coding.
More to the point, the way that I started building this, many pieces (Lots had to do with the versioning system) became interlinked. A version Object in the code related directly to a Module Object and vice versa, therefore the class definitions for each relate to eac otherh. (So having only the Module object, i could access the versioning object and all of its properties). My issue with this is of course what happens if i have both the module and versioning objects in my code simoultaneously, resulting in having not just duplicates of the data within the code, but (perhaps) infinite amounts, killing the app.
So what im wondering is, what if my modules properties where stored within the cache? Ie if i had the Module object, and it had the property ID -- Then the data for ID would be stored in the cache within the module object. Referencing the value simply retrieves the value from the cache if it exists there, and the SQL database if it doesnt. This way, all instances of the module that may be running at the same time will have access to the same information, at the same time, and hopefully causing it to use less space in total.
I would then add a function, so that if a developer was loading a rarely used module, or dident want to occupy cache space with large amounts of data, then they could just call a Dispose function that would remove the data from the cache.
Does this method sound reasonable? I know this probably isnt what the cache is designed for -- but I cant think of any other way to do this without having an infinite loop of objects referring to each other, or causing huge discrepencies from having different instances of objects referencing values that should be the same, but arent because they are technically different instances.

Is there a difference between Session.Clear() and Session.RemoveAll()? The descriptions and documentation pages seem to say exactly the same thing, but I am assuming there must be some reason for creating two functions, right?

I use some session variables to get the job done(shopping cart, etc) but it is not stable..manytimes I get no items in session object and other times(refreshing the page) I get missing data...I downloaded the entire site code to my local pc and debugged it and run it succesfully without any session data missing...When I run it in the server, I get bad session again: no products in shopping cart or products with missing quantities...
The same website runs smoothly in our production server too....The problem is with our development server...

I have some code in my page load event where I just want to fire once when the user opens the Browser. The only issue is if you open a new tab with the same website the session variable does not reset. Is there a way to reset the session variable when you open a new tab or do you have to take the whole web browser down for it to clear the session variable.

There are reams of info out there about things causing InProc session to drop session objects, but that's not what's happening here. We're missing individual variables within stable InProc session objects, and are not sure whether they're not being written or being lost after a successful write. I've confirmed with WinDBG that the sessions are live and contain some, but not all, of the data written to them.
Guid g = System.Guid.NewGuid();
this.Context.Session.Add(g.ToString(), result.ImageData);
output.Write("<img src="display.aspx?id=" + g.ToString() + "">");
This code is pretty straightforward, and it works flawlessly in Test. In Production, under heavy load, though, it fails ~1% of the time. If Mr Smith visits the site and attempts to display 4 pieces of image data, 2 of them might be saved in his session and two of them be lost. The InProc session object for Mr. Smith exists. The traffic logs show he clicked 4 times, each with a different id param. But there are only 2 guids in his InProc session object, instead of 4. The 2 session objects we did capture do correspond to 2 of the id's shown in the traffic log (his 1st and 3rd clicks.) The traffic logs for his 2nd and 4th clicks, though, show a guid id that's not in his InProc session object.
Lines 1&3 of the above code obviously worked for those 2nd and 4th clicks, or he'd not have had the id in the URI for him to click. Line 2, however seems to have failed silently in some way. If any exception had been thrown, I'd expect we'd not ever have arrived at line 3. I can't see any way for the user to receive the guid id, but the session to fail to have it. The other possibility is line 2 worked successfully, but the variable later disappeared, how I cannot even imagine.

ASP.NET v3.5
IIS 6

We're running a web farm, but users constantly return to the same server. I'm researching now whether there's any way users might be slipping off to the other server.

What is an appropriate use case for all of the above? It seems session and cache are quite similar, and I can't think of much use for application.

I have an application that goes through a series of questions and I have a view that shows each question based on the ViewData.
I would like to store the QuestionID (the view uses this to determine which question to show), but I'm curious if I should be storing the CurrentQuestionID in the Session or as a hidden field?
I am sure this is pretty common and I was curious what the conventions/best practices were for this sort of thing.

whats the exact use of static variables in overall programming in .net and for asp.net...
Recently i went for the interview where interviewer asked me 2 question which i was not sure for the same..
whats the use of session object, i said sessions are the server side object, they are used when you want to store user specific data at server side, then he asked what if i want to use static variables for the same, i was mum, can anyone tell me how asp.net will behave if i store the user specific information in static variables.If i use cookies which are the best option to store the data at client side (not sensitive one), but what if user has disabled cookies on his machine, will my application would crash.

How do you create a dictionary of objects in the session? More specifically, I have a list of objects: MyList stores MyObject as the result of a linq query with the date as a parameter.
List<MyObject> Mylist;
MyList = GetObjects(TheDate);
Now I'd like to store MyList in the session object in a dictionary with the date as the key. When the page needs a MyList for a specific date, first search the dictionary and if it's blank for that date, get the data from the GetObjects query and store the result in the dictionary in the session.

I have created a custom user creation wizard to store custom user information, This is working fine. I am now trying to create a new page to give the newly created user to create users in there own company, so i need to retrieve the company information from the user profile created and automaticlly fill that information into the new create user wizard. ie User from A company logs in. (company_id from profile is stored in session)
User A wants to make another user in company A (but cannot make a user in company B) User A fills in details for new user, Company A information is autofill into new user info. (possibly from session)
I have read alot about storing membership. info into session but i cannot find any code examples of how to do this. I need to find a way to store Company_id into session and then use that for creating a new user with the same Company_id.
