I have a page that inserts a record to an sql database and I would like to do the following:
(i) Check if a record already exist before trying do an insert
(ii) If a record exist, the page should be able to inform/display a message in a textbox informing the user that the record already exist.
I have seen a number of post on the internet that suggest that one possible solution is to write a sproc and use the T-sql IF EXIST function. However, I have NOT seen a complete code showing (a) how this can be done (b) how to call the sproc from an asp page (c) and MORE IMPORTANTLY how to display a message informing a user that a record already exist i.e. when the record already exist in the database.

string jSFile = ResolveUrl("~/MyProject/JavaScripts/dir/test.js");
if (!System.IO.File.Exists(jSFile))
{
...
}
This code doesn't work and I guess it's the jSFile that doesn't work well with the IO.File.Exists but I know the jSFile has a valid path because when I use few line later
Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptInclude("myfile",jSFile);
it does attach the JavaScript file to the ASPX and all work fine.

I have a SQL database that creates a record for every document uploaded by the user to the server. I want to check this table before a user uploads a document to ensure they don't upload a file with name that already exists.
I know how to make the connection and make the SqlCommand to query the table for an existing record. But I don't know how to check the record count from the sqlCommand I made.
Does that make sense?
Using myConnectionCheck As New SqlConnection(myConnectionStringCheck)
Dim myCommandCheck As New SqlCommand()
myCommandCheck.Connection = myConnectionCheck
myCommandCheck.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM Req_Docs WHERE Doc_Name =" & DocName
myConnectionCheck.Open()
myCommandCheck.ExecuteNonQuery()
End Using

I'm trying to put a registration page together in Visual Web Designer.
I would like to send a confirmation Email after someone is leaving his registration data and pressing the INSERT button.
The key fields in my database are: Email, Name, Surname, Address
Before I send the confirmation Email I would like to check if the email value entered in the form is realy added to the database.
I was copy past already some C code in my page, therefore it will be fine if the code can be in C.
- checking if record is realy added to database after pressing INSERT button
- setup the confirmation Email

I have a asp:Button and asp:Textbox on Default.aspx page
Code is as below:
<asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Save" Width="80px" CommandName="Update"
OnClientClick="EnableDdlCompany();saveButtonClick();" CommandArgument="Save" OnClick="btnSave_Click"/>
<asp:TextBox ID="txtBarcodeNumber" runat="server" MaxLength="11" Width="230px"
Text='<%# Bind("BarcodeNo") %>' Display="None"
OnTextChanged="TextChanged" AutoPostBack="true"></asp:TextBox>
On button click, I want to call a javascript code to check that If the entered BarCode Number in Textbox already exist in Database, then show an alert "Number already exist" else allow user to save and navigate to Default2.aspx
I can able to do the same checking on TextBox OnTextChanged event using c# code, as below:
protected void TextChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) {
TextBox txtbarcode = fvIPRForm.FindControl("txtbarcodenumber") as TextBox;
if (txtbarcode.Text.Length > 0 && txtbarcode.Text.Length < 11) {
string error = "The Barcode Number " + txtbarcode.Text + " is invalid, the barcode length must be 11 character.";
ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this, typeof(string), "Successful", "alert('" + error + "');", true);
[Code] ....
Here, IPRRequest is the class/.dll file name and IsValidBarcodeTest is a function defined in the class file
But same checking I tried using the c# code on button's OnClick="btnSave_Click" event, but dont know why this event is not firing, I guess due to CommandArgument on button, but I am not sure.
That's why I want to achieve it using Javascript.

I have a GridView on a page for maintainance of the database (mdf). Under this GridView1 I have a FormView1 where I use the ItemInsertTemplate to Insert new rows in my database (which shows the data in GridView1). The first textbox (BIDTextBox) i have on this template, contains text which identify a person. I would like to have a routine which checks if the same value that is entered in the BIDTextBox allready exists in the database. This routine should be fired upon leaving the control BIDTextBox.
I have tried with some stored procedure in my database, but that dosn't seem to do the trick. The most logical to me seems to do a loop thru my table "Ansatte" in my database using sql, selecting any occurence from the field "BID" in my table "Ansatte" that is simillar to the text entered in the BIDTextBox.

I am very new to this and have watched a lot of the videos. While trying out VWD2010 and SQL2008 Express, I come across many things, I just don't know how to do. Here is the latest:
I have a Table
UserId - Int - AutoIncrement
FirstName - Var(10)
LastName - Var(10)
I also have an ASP web page that allow the user to enter a first name and last name. It also has a button to submit. What I would like to do is have a Select statement check to see if the name already exists, then send a comment back to the user via a label. If it doesn't exist, then I would like to Insert the info and then again inform the user via label.
SelectCommand="SELECT COUNT (UserId) FROM Users WHERE ((FirstName=@FirstName) and (LastName=@LastName))"
InsertCommand="INSERT INTO User(LastName, FirstName) VALUES (@FirstName, @LastName)"
<InsertParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="tbFirstName" Name="FirstName"
PropertyName="Text" Type="String" />
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="tbLastName" Name="LastName"
PropertyName="Text" Type="String" />
</InsertParameters>
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="tbFirstName" Name="FirstName"
PropertyName="Text" Type="String" />
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="tbLastName" Name="LastName"
PropertyName="Text" Type="String" />
</SelectParameters>
On the code behind, I get lost. (Obviously this doesn't work, but I don't know how to go about getting a results back. Protected Sub bSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles bSubmit.Click
SqlDataSource1.Select(DataSourceSelectArguments.Empty)
(get a return)
(check return value, if <>0 then
lblResults.Text = "exists!"
else
SqlDataSource1.Insert()
lblResults.Text="added!"
end if)
End Sub

I have a table "assignments" with records that are assigned to multiple "users" by the "department" they belong to. Each user then can have it's own "status" for each assignment.
When the user logs-in i need to show all his assignments and the status.(but status record doesn't exist yet)
When a new assignment is created I don't want to have to create a new record relating the assignment to the user. I want the relationship to be by the department the user belongs to and the department the assignment was assigned to.
Only thing i can think of is when the user logs in to load the assignments that belong to the user's department then look thru all the records. For each record loop thru the status table. If a record exist show the the status. if it doesn't then make default value and when the users clicks to view the assignment a new status record will be added.
Only thing i don't like is looping thru the status records while looping thru all the assignments.
How else can I do it? I don't see how could join the assignments table and the status table if the status record doesn't exist yet.
tables:
[ASSIGNMENTS]
assignmentID
departmentID
assignment
[DEPARTMENT]
departmentID
department
[USERS]
userID
departmentID
user
[STATUS]
userID
assignemntID
status
BTW, I'm using Linq-to-SQL

I'm trying to make checkboxes check if they exist in a table.
What I'm initially trying to do is to list the values is a table e.g. product types, and then if a product has those types assigned to it mark the check box as checked. e.g.
Products Table
Prod No Prod Name
1 Silver Bag
2 Black Bag
3 Red Hat
Product_Types Table
Prod_Type_No Prod_Type_Name
1 Bag
2 Leather
3 Hat
Associated_Product_Types
Prod_No Prod_Type_No
1 1
1 2
2 1
3 3
So When I select product 1 (Silver Bag) it shows 3 check boxes for the product types and prod type 1 and 2 are checked as they exist in the Associated_Product_Types
My problem is I cant figure out how to mark them as checked based on the values in that table.

System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: 'DropDownList' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.this question has been for a long time ago but seem no actual answer for it except for catching the exception.I don't want just catch error instead of check first whether the value exist in drop down list. My scenario was different from the other. my data source is bind to a datatable, all is in hard code.
