Configuration :: Deploying Multiple Web Applications To Same Site?

Oct 26, 2010

how to structure our intranet. The way it's going right now is, that I'll create a web application that usually contains just a single web page and then deploy it. I'm using the file system deployment to deploy to a test server.

The file structure on this test server is something like "\serverwebintranetwebapplicationsAPP_NAME". I would create a folder on the server with whatever name to replace "APP_NAME" and then deploy into that folder. Everything deploys fine and is structured fine, none of the pages will load.

When try to load the page you get an error like: Could not load type 'WebInterface._Default'. The dll containing that code is definitely there. Inside the "APP_NAME" folder is the bin folder, config file, and the (usually) single aspx page. So for some reason, the web page can't find the dll files.

Configuration :: Deploying Web Applications With Sub Web Applications?

Apr 22, 2010

Our corporate intranet is designed so that each web application is a child application in the primary application.. Everything has worked fine with Visual Studio 2008 and even in 2010 running the website locally works great, the output directory for the child apps is ..in and the ProjectName.dll copies to that directory.. When I do a publish however it does not and I have to manually copy the dll from the bin folder in the project folder to the parent bin folder, this isn't hard of course but more of a pain in the butt each time I need to publish something. I made sure the output directory is correct for both debug and release yet on publish is just copies it to the child bin and not the parent bin as needed.

Multiple Applications On A Single Site - Session And Forms Authentication Scope?

Mar 7, 2011

We're using ASP.NET and IIS 6.0. I realise that the definitions of applications, websites and virtual directories are ill-defined in IIS 6, and changed a lot in IIS 7. However, I'm stuck with IIS 6.0 for now.

We have a single web site defined in IIS, and a number of separate sub-sites in Virtual Directories.

The scheme looks like this:-

[URL]

[URL]

site1, site2, ... are virtual directories in IIS 6.0, under the "Default Web Site".

I need to use ASP.NET sessions and forms authentication in most of these sites, and I don't want them to share authentication data or session information at all.

Both the mechanisms currently depend on cookies. However, the cookies created by default use the same name, and have a path of "/" in the browser, meaning the sites' cookies will clash with each other.

Without changing the default name for each cookie, how can I enforce separation between my sub-sites? Do I need to change the virtual directories for IIS 6 "Applications"? Or is there some way in code to enforce a more limited scope for the cookies?

Configuration :: Single Domain Multiple Applications?

Feb 17, 2011

We are having a project which is for various online application systems for an educational institute. (Asp.Net 2.0 Web Site)

initially we developed all applications in single project with proper folder structure. but now we want to make each application as separate product.

all applications share single authentication(Obviusly this is single project) want to keep that way only.

I want to split project in smaller projects but want to keep shared authentication so how should i orgnise this project in IDE.

Also i need guidence on hosting such project

i should make small projects within single solution file. and at the time of publish amke single virtual directory to host the root project(login.aspx etc) and in subdirectories i should host other projects. so this way SSO(single sign on) across applications is possible ..

Deploying MVC Applications To Staging And Production With SQL?

Jan 28, 2010

We have been a ColdFusion shop for 10 years, and are now switching over to ASP.net MVC. Our target framework is .net 4.0 BETA 2 using VS 2010 BETA 2. We set up two instances of Windows Server 2008 (staging and production), and will be using our existing database server (SQL Server 2008).

None of us really have much experience in ASP.net itself, though we are all very comfortable in C# and the MVC pattern. The coding itself isn't much of an issue; but the deployment process is. Our goal is to be able to have a CI setup that will automatically pull down, and test, our applications into staging on commit - then have the option to tag, then switch, the checkouts on our production sites when websites pass QA.

Some of the things I'm having issues with here is the concept of an ASP.net application and how it integrates into SVN. CF, like PHP or RoR, are all scripting languages and as such require no build process (checking out the source into production is very straightforward). But in this case, applications need to be compiled - which is where we start to have problems. Will we need to create another server (or use an existing one) that has some sort of application that pulls down code, compiles it, then somehow pushes it on the live servers? If so, what is considered the best way to accomplish this? I imagine if we end up using a build tool such as Nant, adding additional steps to migrate the database would be trivial, but what is the best way to accomplish this as well?

Another, slightly unrelated, problem is how our designers will work with our code. Most of them are on Macs, and using VS isn't much of an option. How will they be able to edit the aspx, css and image files easily? Our goal is to make this as transparent as possible to them.

We have done a lot of shopping around, and ASP.net MVC seems to be the best option as far as our familiarity with the language, and our current platform. We just need to figure out a good build process so everything is as transparent as possible.

Web Applications / Technical Limitations With Deploying Webserver?

Aug 30, 2010

I'll soon be managing a fleet of ASP.NET webservers...

What are the technical limitations with deploying an ASP.NET webserver? Can I just copy the file(s) over, restart the website, and I'm good to go?

Is this any different than what VS2010's "deploy" does?

Does it matter what "type" of project I have: a Web Site or a Web Application?

Configuration :: Managing A .net Site Across Multiple Servers

Mar 28, 2011

A friend and I manage a large website for a company. The site is build using Visual Studio 2005 and is a series of nested web applications run inside a master application employing nested master pages. Currently we have to manually move files around folders and FTP them to various servers and I am looking for a way to be able to manage the deployment end of the site in a more automated fashion. I'd like to be able to work on my local version of a project and once I'm done be able to hit one button and publish the site to our internal testing server and then when testing is complete hit another button to deploy it to the live web servers. Right now we have to manually navigate the windows folders and copy pages, css files, images, swfs, etc and FTP them manually. The driver for this is that we have a new junior develop starting and want to remove the manual aspect in advance of him starting.

C# - Handling Multiple Languages Across Multiple Applications And Shared Libraries?

Jan 18, 2010

We are developing products that will be used in the following way:

Various shared libraries which may be used by multiple products. I anticipate these libraries will mostly need to access string resources that contain error messages/exceptions. Various end-user based applications, designed to run as standalone apps on a PC. They will be required to support multiple languages upon deployment/installation.

Various web-sites which may be required to support multiple languages either at deployment time or possibly at runtime (i.e. minimal or zero downtime). Potentially the site might need to support multiple languages at the same time if being accessed globally.

We may be required to allow customers access to our language files for editing themselves. We would not wish to allow them access to our source code (other than the resource files/dlls) in order to achieve this. We might need to incorporate a facility to log exceptions in our native language (English in this case) and display them in the translated language. This will us debug our customers solutions in the field.

I am already aware of products like RCWinTrans and handling multiple languages in VC++/MFC applications. However, the requirements we are faced with here are more extensive and thus require us to make a few up front decisions that could be difficult to change long term, so ideally we want to make the best choice now. Based on my own knowledge, I have a few questions although I may be missing some tricks with .net that will be happily received. Here are my questions:

What would be best? Put all our resources in a seperate DLL per VS solution OR put the resources in each VS project. The way I see it per solution is easier to manage, modify, and allow customer access. The per project solution seems cleaner though and makes the individual projects more portable. This method would apply to our shared library based solutions as well as our end-application based solutions.

Is it possible to have two seperate resource files loaded at once i.e. if we want to log the exceptions in English but supply them back up the food chain (as a message in an exception) in the translated language? Are there any tricks we can use to automate this like AOP?

Configuration :: Deploying MVC 2 Web App Using EF?

Sep 21, 2010

Used Visual Studio 2008 to publish web app to a local IIS7 Website but still hooked to VS development .mdf file with EF. With this I can successfully access web app via local host. As long as the development db server is running, web access is fine.

Then I tried to change connection to local .SQLEXPRESS where I have other databases (this is my production server). I have replicated the development data into the SQLExpress database already. The connection string appears OK.

The problem is the application's entity data model (.edmx file) is still tied to the development .mdf file.

When I tried to rebuild the entity data model, I can see the production instance in list of db connections but cannot select it. Only the development db objects are available.

So I don't think the problem is related to connecting to the production db. It is more about getting the .edmx file to point to the production table. Either it should migrate over or it needs to be rebuilt. I don't see any MVC deployment pages discussing EF deployments.

Configuration :: Deploying VS 2005 Web App?

Mar 23, 2010

I was given a compiled asp.net web application v2.0 which was created in visual studio 2005. I have made some changes to the site and created various new classes and made it look abit cooler . On my localhost I go to the Visual Studio Project and click rebuild and its stays that the dll has been successfully and all the dll, pdf have been created again with new modified dates. So when I publish the site to the production server, the site uses the old current dll which doesn't show any of the changes I have made.

I have done the following - Deleted all the files from obj/Debug before rebuilding the site

Made sure there were no files defined in the application which are not there in the local system (apparently this is a bug)

I'm don't know what else to try, I' have used red gates .net decompiler and can see all my new class names so I know what all the extra classes are in the new dll.

One thing I'm not sure about is what 'Build Action' do you need to set for the binxxx.dll, at the moment it is set to 'content' but if I set it 'compile' I get "Error 1 Unable to write to output file

'C:1stDirectobjDebugvb-website.pdb': System Error
&H80004005&" .

Deploying Multiple Sites On The Same Codebase?

Nov 9, 2010

I recently inherited a solution with about 10 projects in it. 6 of these projects are individual websites that are basically copy/pastes of the original.

This means that any changes that need to be made must be made to each project in order to update all the websites.

What I want to do is have one project for the website code and be able to deploy that code and some configuration settings to create a new website. That way when I make updates to the main Web project I can just deploy to all the websites.

How do people normally approach this? I'll outline my thoughts on it and hopefully some of you can point out better ways to accomplish this or at least give me some affirmation that I am on the right track.

Have a master markup with very general containers. Allow the users/people setting up the site add widgets to the site which will be assigned to widget placeholders at the top and bottom of all the generic containers. All styling and colors will be controlled with a stylesheet that can be swapped out. I know there is some kind of theming you can do. Does this just swap out groups of css and let you configure which one to use in the webconfig? For elements that will be the same across all sites such as footer images have a naming convention. So if I want Site A to have some footer image I just replace the footer.jpg in the project when I deploy.
