Configuration :: How To Detect The Framework Versions Installed On A Server
May 17, 2010
how to detect the framework versions installed on a server without access to remote desktop or registry? Our server is hosted by Go Daddy and we have limited access, so I wondered if there was a way programatically (in VB if possible)to see the highest or all framework versions installed on the server.

I tried to install MVC2 RC AspNetMVC2_RC_VS2008.exe [URL]? aiming it to use from VS2008SP1(Windows XP Pro SP3) but initially I got an error: Component Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2 has failed to install with the following error message: "A different version of ASP.NET MVC 2 is already installed on your system. Please uninstall this version before proceeding with this install." The following components were not installed:
- Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2 - Visual Studio 2008 Tools The following components failed to install:
- Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2
By my distraction in "Add/Remove Programs" I deleted the entry "Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2" instead of
"Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2 - Visual Studio 2008 Tools" (told me by error text) and then succesfully installed
AspNetMVC2_RC_VS2008.exe Now I see entries in "Add/Remove Programs":
- Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2
- Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2 - Visual Studio 2008 Tools
- Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2 - Visual Studio 2010 Tools
Well, it was the same before uninstall/install. I know that only MVC2 Preview can be used with VS 2010 and I gues that I uninstalled MVC2 Beta that was installed before for VS2008. Now I am in doubt: Had I installed MVC2 RC or what do I have with VS2008? How can I determine/check which release of MVC2 is installed with Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (or VS2010 Pro Beta 2)?

We have a Citrix .ica file icon that will be placed on a web page. Is there a way to detect if a pc has the Citrix client installed?
Our end goal is to display a message at the bottom of the page with a link to install the Citrix client from our network share. But we only want to the message to display if the client pc doesn't have the Citrix client installed.

I'm working with an MVC2 app that had migrated from an MVC1 app quite a while ago. Things have been working - i've been able to compile and deploy a number of iterations without any problems ..
I've noticed that the version info - that bit in the footer of runtime errors - i've received during the normal course of development reads:
Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.4952; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.4955 despite the fact that the project's Properties | Application tab shows the target framework to be .net 3.5. I _think 3.5 is required for mvc2 apps, isn't it?
Shouldn't I expect to see runtime error pages pointing to version info at the 3.5 version?
UPDATE: As that this isn't a simple matter of a framework mismatch, here's the error - but given other factors, I'll assume I need to repair/refresh the workstation's framework installs. The same code works on another ws.

I've migrated two ASP.NET MVC 1 solutions to MVC 2 and therefore kept my web.config almost the same, just changed the necessary stuff in it as documented in Release notes.Although I created a few new test MVC 2 webapss from scratch, until now I haven't really checked out the default new web.config. As I created a new empty MVC 2 Web App today and opened the web.config, I discovered it's much smaller. There's almost no modules, no handlers, etc.

I am trying to tune IIS to reduce contention, and following many articles on the .net I am trying to locate this in the file to no result:
<system.web>
...
<httpRuntime minFreeThreads="8" minLocalRequestFreeThreads="4" ... />
....
<processModel maxWorkerThreads="20" maxIoThreads="20" ... />
....
</.system.web>
Is it normal that none of the .net framework versions contain a machine.config file that contains the above settings?

I have an app that I've built with VS 2008 Pro, which I believe uses version 3.5 of the .Net Framework. I want to run this app on an older machine to test the layout with some older browsers. The site is simple static site. This older machine doesn't have version 3.5 of the framework installed.
If I install just the 3.5 Framework on this older machine, can I then run the site in the browser without having VS2008 or VWD 2008 installed? I want to tweak the css in for the older browsers.

I built an assembly, and that assembly refereces a DLL in my bin folder (lets call it Bob.dll). so multiple users may have different versions of Bob.dll...but by and large they all function the same.
However when my assembly gets dumped into the bin folder, it wants the version it was compiled against.
Is there a way to compile a reference such that it'll just be happy with ANY version?
I know it can be done with assembly binding in the webconfig, but I dont want users to have to do that.

I have a single project website and I would like to create different versions of it to be hosted on different web servers. I do not know if I need to have different versions of the web pages placed in different projects within a single solution or if I need to put different versions in a single project within multiple solutions. I need to be able to build and publish each version separately as an independent website for uploading into a different server. What should I do?

We have multiple websites deployed onto Windows 2003 WebServer running under .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 version and now we want to upgrade it to .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, so just wanted to check that after upgrading the .NET Framework on the server do we also need to re-deploy the websites by recompiling them in .NET Framwork 2.0 SP2 version or it's not necessary as they will automatically start referencing the latest assemblies?

I have a framework 2.0 AJAX app that was moved to Windows 7 2008 R2 server with II7. The application pool is set to 2.0 for the website, but its always looking for this assembly. Everything I've read says you do not install AJAX 1.0 Extensions on Server 2008? Since this IIS is not mine, I'm trying to be cautious. Should I install the extensions, or is there some server setting Im missing??

After i Installed the VS 2010. I ran into problems running the asp.net 2.0 websites.
I visited the fixes page to read about the IIS metabase. the problem is - aspnet_regiis of framework .net 2.0 doen't work any more. Also all the websites / virtual directories configured in IIS 5.x on Windows XP to use the asp.net 2.0 framework don't work.
So i downloaded the Metaacl.vbs to check the settings of IIS metabase on my PC.
The permissions assigned to Admin user and the Service user account seems to be alright. No i am confused as to what is the exact cause of -
1) The websites targeting Framework 2.0 are not working any more
2) Why is the aspnet_regiis corrupt and gives the error - "The application failed to initialize properly" Is it a known compatibility issue for VS 2008 and VS 2010. Can we or Can we not have both of them installed parallely?

I host a website that has recently been upgraded from .NET Framework 2.0 to .NET Framework 4.0. Within the website, I have an instance of BlogEngine which still requires .NET Framework 2.0. Each website is in it's own application pool. My issue is that when I browse to the blog portion of my website, I receive a 500.19 error with the following information...
The configuration section 'system.web.extensions' cannot be read because it is missing a section declaration The web.conf file that is listed in the error message is the config file that belongs to my root website which is running .NET Framework 4.0. How do I get the two websites to run together in the same website using different versions of the .NET Framework?
