How To Migrate Web.config Files To New Versions Of Framework

May 27, 2010

I've migrated two ASP.NET MVC 1 solutions to MVC 2 and therefore kept my web.config almost the same, just changed the necessary stuff in it as documented in Release notes.Although I created a few new test MVC 2 webapss from scratch, until now I haven't really checked out the default new web.config. As I created a new empty MVC 2 Web App today and opened the web.config, I discovered it's much smaller. There's almost no modules, no handlers, etc.

Is Normal That None Of The .net Framework Versions Contain A Machine.config File

Mar 30, 2011

I am trying to tune IIS to reduce contention, and following many articles on the .net I am trying to locate this in the file to no result:

<system.web>
...
<httpRuntime minFreeThreads="8" minLocalRequestFreeThreads="4" ... />
....
<processModel maxWorkerThreads="20" maxIoThreads="20" ... />
....
</.system.web>

Is it normal that none of the .net framework versions contain a machine.config file that contains the above settings?

Discrepancy Between Framework Versions For MVC2 App?

Dec 11, 2010

I'm working with an MVC2 app that had migrated from an MVC1 app quite a while ago. Things have been working - i've been able to compile and deploy a number of iterations without any problems ..

I've noticed that the version info - that bit in the footer of runtime errors - i've received during the normal course of development reads:

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.4952; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.4955 despite the fact that the project's Properties | Application tab shows the target framework to be .net 3.5. I _think 3.5 is required for mvc2 apps, isn't it?

Shouldn't I expect to see runtime error pages pointing to version info at the 3.5 version?

UPDATE: As that this isn't a simple matter of a framework mismatch, here's the error - but given other factors, I'll assume I need to repair/refresh the workstation's framework installs. The same code works on another ws.

Configuration :: How To Detect The Framework Versions Installed On A Server

how to detect the framework versions installed on a server without access to remote desktop or registry? Our server is hosted by Go Daddy and we have limited access, so I wondered if there was a way programatically (in VB if possible)to see the highest or all framework versions installed on the server.

C# - What's The Best Way To Handle Web.config File Versions

Apr 14, 2010

I have an ASP.Net web site (ASPX and ASMX pages) with a single web.config file. We have a development version and a production version. Over time, the web.config files for development and production have diverged substantially. What is the best practice for keeping both versions of web.config in source control (we use Tortoise SVN but I don't think that matters)?

It seems like I could add the production web.config file with a name like "web.config.prod", and then when we turnover all the files we would just add the step of deleting the existing web.config and renaming web.config.prod to web.config. This seems hackish, although I'm sure it would work. Is there not some mechanism for dealing with this built in to Visual Studio? It seems like this would be a common issue, but I haven't found any questions (with answers) about this.

Conflict On IIS 7.5 With Web.config When Mixing Different Versions

Nov 30, 2010

I am setting up a new website on new web servers that are running IIS 7.5, which is new to me. I have ran into a problem when deploying an ASP.NET app that is using the 4.0 framework. I get error messages about conflicts with the web.config file associated with the Default Web Site. The asp.net app defined in the default website is using the 2.0 framework currently. My 4.0 framework app is defined as an application under the default website. Both are using different Application Pools. I tried adding this to my 4.0 apps config file

<location path="." inheritInChildApplications="false">

How do I get around this web.config conflict issue? Update for error message: There is a duplicate 'system.web.extensions/scripting/scriptResourceHandler' section defined. The config file for the 4.0 app does not even have this section. The default website app does have this.

How To Create A Common Web.config File And A Bunch Of Specific Web.config Files

Feb 16, 2011

Currently, I work on an ASP.NET project which is hosted under version control and is used on several developer machines, tester machine and production environment.

In three cases, configuration (Web.config) may be different. For example, developer and tester environments use testing SQL Server, whereas in production environment, another SQL Server is accessed, so the connection string is different in those cases.

We want to keep three versions of Web.config in subversion. But modifying each of three files every time we need to add, remove or change a common setting is annoying: it would be nice to have a common, master Web.config, which will be inherited by each of the three Web.config files.

How to set up an ASP.NET project which will use a master configuration file and different slave configuration files on different machines, thus sharing the same project/source code/configuration files in subversion?

Unable To Read Config Settings From External Config Files

Sep 1, 2010

We are experiencing some strange behaviour on one of our ASP.NET web servers (Windows 2003 64-bit). After some activity, two third-party controls are unable to run correctly. One is log4net (it does not write error messages out) and the other is a menu control (it displays eval message instead of picking up its license). The one common thread is that both controls pick up their config from external config files (linked to from web.config).

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this or experienced this in any way. Is it related to file/folder rights? The server has been running fine for a while and just started exhibiting this behaviour. Perhaps it occurs around the time the worker processes are recycled.

Following the first site, it had worked but when I´ve moved the pages and files to other folders and set the web.config file on this folder, now it won´t work at all!!!

The file is an *.swf object. I did put the asapi.dll to map the extension on the website root, I´ve put the

on the web.config new folder and on the web.config website´s root.

It won´t work!!! I can access the file directly!!! on the web.config of the folder that contains the file, there is a <deny users="*" /> line.

May 7, 2010

I just upgraded to VS 2010 and MVC 2.0 and I noticed the web.config has two additional files attached to it? Are these files used to specify debug and release specific settings, so you don't clutter up the main web.config?

Does it even make sense to place a connection string in the root web.config file if I have have a local and remote one in the debug and release web.configs respectively.

Installation :: 2008 R2 / IIS 7.5 Fails To Compile .NET 4 Framework's Web.config?

Nov 15, 2010

I'm using IIS 7.5 on Server 2008 R2 to configure a .Net 4-based website. I've used the Web Deployment Tool to import a known-good, 32-bit Windows 7-based IIS server package. As far as I can tell, the 2008-based IIS server and application pool are now properly configured to use .Net 4, and that the server setup is identical to that of the known-good configuration.The problem I'm having is that when I attempt to load a page on the new site, IIS returns a compilation error of the .Net framework's web.config. The error is copied below. It's my understanding that a properly-configured server shouldn't have any problem compiling this file, so I'm looking for some pointers on what I can do to resolve this. I've verified that:

both .Net 4 and .Net 3.5.1 are installed on the server, the 'default' page at http://localhost loads properly http://localhost/Services, the root folder of my application, can be browsed commenting out the offending System.Xml.Linq namespace simply results in a compilation error of some other namespace in the same group.

Server Error in '/Services' Application.

.net - How To Maintain Web.config Files

Feb 2, 2011

I'm interested to know how others maintain their web.config files for deployed applications. (assuming no automated deployment mechanism - that is out of the scope of this question)So during development, some developers might make use of web.config transformations, build/publish their projects (debug/release, test/live configurations), then deploy all published artifacts to a web server and set up IIS. Some developers might build/publish their projects, deploy published artifacts to a web server, set up IIS, then manually update the web.configs for the specific environment (test/live, etc) they are deploying into

Configuration :: Custom Config Files Encryption

Mar 24, 2011

I have a couple of configuration files flxConnection.config and flxSecurity.config files which are being referenced from the Machine.config file like below.

<securitySettings configSource="flxSecurity.config" />
<connectionStrings configSource="flxConnection.config" />

I would like to encrypt the files (a) flxSecurity.config and (b) flxConnection.config using the RSAProtectedConfigurationProvider using a custom RSA key, which can be deployed to other servers. How is that possible? If possible, looked at a variety of stuff in the internet and they all seem to be referring to either Web.config or Machine.config encryption which is pretty straight-forward. This is how the flxConnection.config looks like,

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<connectionStrings>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated
Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>

This is how the flxSecurity.config looks like,

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<securitySettings>
<add key="APC_APP_ID" value="apcrpt"/>
</securitySettings>
