Configuration :: Open Data Source At IIS Server Level?
Oct 17, 2010
Is there a way to confige IIS to open a database(s) at server level and other application just reference the database handler(pointer)? For an example in Tomcat or Resin, we can specify a set of database souece in the configuration file so the Tomcat or Resin starts, these database will be opened. And rest of applications can reference these datasource handler/pointer in their individual application web.config files.

I was merging my web.config file and one I downloaded for open source forums, as it told me to. I copied the different lines myself, but now I'm getting three compile errors in my file.
Here are the errors:
1- The 'compliation' start tag on line 47 does not match the end tag of 'system.web'. Line 205, position 4.
2- Tag was not closed. (On line 47, column 4)
3- Expecting end tag </compilation>. (On line 205, column 3)
I'll also post my web.config file below.
[Code]....

I have built an ASP.NET (.NET v4) application in VS 2010. It is working just fine. But when I try to create deployment package (so I can deploy it in our test IIS 7.5 Server), it gives me error like this,
Error 1 Could not open Source file: Could not find file 'C:11-2 estobjDebugCSAutoParameterize ransformedWeb.config'. 0 0 test
Thing is in past, I had deployed the SAME application using the SAME method.

There seems to be an issue with the "Trust" level when executing within a "Cloud" environment. In order for the following app to work it needs a trust level of at least "Medium." This web app is developed using VB.NET 3.5, and Visual Studio 2008. The app works perfectly on my local sever but when deployed/published to the "Cloud" it returns the error: System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I have added all 4 required values, ConsumerKey, ConsumerSecret, OAuthToken, and OAuthTokenSecret to the web.config file in the "appSettings" section of the "configuration"
[Code]....
If found that by going to [URL] and signing into the account that is using the application, then go to the "Settings" page, go to the bottom of the page and click on the "API" menu option. Once the API page appears you will clik on the button "2", Register An App. On the right side on the new page, you will see a button "View Your Applications." If you have previously registered your app, click this button, If not fill out the appliction for a new app. Now at the View your Applications page, select the app you want to get the authorization keys for where is says "Edit Details". Now click on the button to the right that says, "Application Detail." Here you will find your Consumer Key and your Consumer Secret Key. On the right side of this page you will see the menu option "My Access Token", click it and you will find your oauth_token and your oauth_token_secret keys! Not that you have all the keys, put them in the "appSettings" section of the web.config file. Add "Dim twConn As New TwitterVB2.TwitterAPI" at the top of the page.
I then created a subroutine where I pass in the Tweet:
[Code]....
This code works great in an enviornment that allows at least a "Medium" trust level. However it appears that many of the "new" hosting envrionments such as "Cloud Hosting" and others do not allow this trust level automatically! However if the trust level is less than "Medium" on your host you will likely receive the error message: "Twitter Returned: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed." If anyone has found a fix for this "Trust Level"

I wrote an web form application in C# to open Office Word 2007 documents from the application. This worked perfectly testing in my development environment. But after deploying my application to web server, the documents do not open and I get the following error retrieving the com class factory for component with clsid failed due to the following error: 80040154
It looks like it may be because Office Word 2007 is not installed on the web server box. Would installing it on the web server be the solution, or is this a bad idea. If it is not the solution, then would is an alternative way to do this.

I have inherited a VS 2008 project that hosts 5 services in a web directory and am attempting to add a new service. The existing services all work well, and my service is working except when I tried to add authentication like the existing services have using the membership.ValidateUser method. The SOAP request runs for ~18 seconds, and an exception (listed in full below) is thrown with a "network-related or instance-specific error". Other services validate the user, run some code and return in about 500 milliseconds, I think it is safe to assume I am hitting a timeout.
What makes this odd is that the new service lives in the same web application directory as the old services. It uses the same web.config file. I had been intensely reading posts and documentation related to the "network-related or instance specific error" until I noticed the Data Source in the connection string was not a name I am familiar with.
I changed the Data Source to be the name of the machine where the services run (thereis a database called membership on there), and I instantly got kicked out with an exception because the database login credentials were incorrect. Still confused as to why the new service would have this problem, I set out to find this data source. Running the SQL 2000 Server Network Utility doesn't list this instance. osql /L only lists the (local) instance. How do I find this instance? Why does my service not see the instance as the other ones do? More information listed below.
Server is Server 2003 Standard SP1, IIS 6
SQL Server 2000 is the DB
Each service is a C# Windows forms project (is there any valid reason to do this?) that has been changed to output a class library.
Services inherit from the webservice class.
A final project in the solution is an ASP.NET web application that has dependencies on all the other projects and hosts the asmx files which simply refer to the C# classes from the other projects.
Authentication is using Membership.ValidateUser against SQL server 2000. The web.config contains this:
[Code]....
The exception is here:
[Code]....

I have 2 connection strings which connect to the same database. I used the exact same syntax for both of them, the only difference is the address which they point at.
The "ApplicationServices" connection string functions just fine.
The "GoMelodyEntities" connection string produces Keyword not supported: 'data source'.

I have a site (URL...) which loads and runs fine locally on the server itself, but when I try to access this externally from outside of the server (and firewall) will not load. In Safari for example, I get the message "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding".I have other sites on this server that do load and operate fine so I don't belive this is a Firewall issue. One thing I did notice however is that when the error message appears, it seems like the site is trying to change the protocol from http to https.
I'm trying to debug this to find out what could be happening. I've tried looking into the IIS logs as well as the Event Viewer but I see nothing. I have even tried to turn on Failed Request Tracking but no errors are logged.

My ISP recently has migrated my app to a new platform. The app has now to be parked in a root subfolder, say site1, rather than at the root.
The main page can still be accessed via [URL] is now located at /site1/default.aspx. Subfolder pages however cannot be accessed correctly anymore since the url includes now subfolder name "site1" ie
[URL]
instead of
[URL]
This of course breaks page referencing.
Despite multiple requests, I have not yet obtained an answer so far. Question: Is there a simple way to strip away string "site1" from the url, preferably at the web.config level? I know this can be done programmatically at the page level, to clean up page references (>30 pages). In addition, this could entail further compatibilty problems between the deployment version and the local development site.
