Configuration :: Run Different Website From Same Physical Location?
Dec 22, 2010
I have a website say www.abc.com I am giving the users there own mini site with the URLwww.abc.com/website/home.aspx?UID=1
This URL will access to my Home.aspx page located in website folder and display the user information based on UID
I want to register each user with their own domain and redirect the functionality to mywww.abc.com/website/home.aspx?UID=1 page.
For example let's say when user type www.user.com user the site will be redirected to mywww.abc.com/website/home.aspx?UID=1 page but the URL of web browser will not change, user can still seewww.user.com on his web browser.
If User click about us link i.e. www.user.com/aboutus/ the site will be redirected towww.abc.com/website/aboutus.aspx?UID=1 page but the URL of web browser will not change.
I am using IIS 6 and ASP.net 2.0.

I've set up IIS7 on my home computer and have written a very basic ASP.NET website to be deployed on this webserver. Everything works great. How do I determine programmatically the physical path (for instance, "C:inetpub_MyWebsite") of the website? I need to write an XML file to the website's root folder dynamically and therefore need to know the folder's physical location.

I'm running an Asp.NET MVC 2 app under IIS 6.All pages are behind Windows Integrated Authentication except for some pages that accepts anonymous access.We setup these pages in the web.config with the location element like this
<location path="MyPath/ToThePage">
<system.web>
<authorization>
[code]...
this is an Asp.NET MVC app, the path indicated in the path attribute points to an action method not a physical location.When this was running under IIS 7 integrated mode it was working fine. But when we switched to IIS 6 we get the login prompt even with the pages that are set to accept anonymous users.ow to make IIS 6 authorize anonymous access to non physical paths ?

I've found myself having a requirement to configure log4net based on a file relative to the physical location of the running ASP.NET web application. We like to start the logger as early as possible, so Application_Start seems a proper place. In IIS6, this works fine and has been running for ages, but now we moved to IIS7 and this won't work anymore:
string absolutePath = HttpContext.Current.Request.PhysicalApplicationPath;
because the HttpContext.Current is not available in many global.asax (Application, Session) events. This is old news, we all know it raises the now infamous Request is not available in this context error. We don't want to move back to Classic Mode.
Now, the question is simple: without using HttpContext, is it possible to find the physical location of the currently running web application instance?

Via my .aspx pages users can upload photos to my server, and also delete them again.
The uploading works, so users can write new photos to the physical location.
But when trying to delete those photos I get:
Access to the path 'E:wwwrootimagesphotos6_315_P1010619.JPG' is denied.
I checked (via Windows Explorer) what the security properties for that folder are: IIS_IUSRS group has read and write access...

I created a web setup project. When the users install it, the virtual directory gets created and all the files are created under "C:Inetpubwwwroot<myvirtualdirectory>".
How to customize the web setup project so that I can change the virtual directory physical path? I had followed the tutorial
[URL]
but it didn't work and my MSI stopped installing alltogether.

It seems you can not specify the location of applicationhost.config of a IISExpress website from VS2010 SP1 ... if you could specify the location, one could add it to the solution directory and put it in version control, so anyone can very quickly get the whole project out of version control, including the configuration for the website.

I am having a little difficulty trying to wrap my head around site structures. I have quite a large asp.net site, for which: Admins can see a user list, Each user can have many accounts, and for each account can have many items. I can picture this as a breadcrumb trail of editing a particular item. User List > Mr Bob > Accounts > BOB77 > Items > Item32 > Edit
User List = All the users Mr Bob = A user the administrator has selected from the User List Accounts = A list of the user's accounts 12BOB = The administrator has selected the account named 12BOB Items = A list of the items an account contains Item32 = The item that the administrator selected Edit = The action that the administrator wants to do. I can picture how this would look like if it was using ASP.NET MVC with the URL, but I am unsure how to map this out using Webforms, and in the physical filesystem.
This is what I have thought up about how I am guessing the physical structure would look like. Will this have to use session variables to achieve what I am trying to do?
/Users/User/Edit.aspx <- for editing a user
/Users/User/View.aspx <- for viewing a user
/Users/User/Accounts/Default.aspx <- for viewing all accounts
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/View.aspx <- for viewing an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Edit.aspx <- for editing an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Items/Default.aspx <- for viewing all items in an account
/Users/User/Accounts/Account/Items/Item/Edit.aspx <- for editing an item
Where can I read more about this kind of setup in a web application? Or, can someone point me in the direction of an available project that has this kind of layout?

I have a custom ASP.NET application that I utilize for several clients that I host. Each client has a separate domain and the application is normally a child application under the root domain [URL]. The application files are the same (aspx, ascx, style sheets, images, etc.). The only thing different is the web.config file for each client. As development of the application continues to evolve, I have to update the application for each directory and this obviously becoming tedious. I am trying to come up with a method keep the application up to date. My first though is placing the application into a single physical path and creating multiple applications pointing to that path (the problem with this method is I can't have different web.config files). I am curious as to what solution others are using in this scenario...

I have an ASP.net/VB.net website, and I currently capture the visitor's IP address with the following code:
IPAddr = Page.Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR").
Does anyone know the corresponding code that can capture (1) the visitor's name (ID) and (2) location?
Note: I am trying to capture the true information from the visitor's computer, not false (proxy) information. As an example, the code:
"Page.Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR")" produces a false (proxy) IP address.

I wanted to impose specific timeout interval and request length on some specific pages that uploads documents of size up to 50MB. Hence I did the following config changes after going through some sites.
<location path="Upload.aspx" >
<httpRuntime maxRequestLength="51200"/>
<httpRuntime executionTimeout="36000"/>
</location>
I keep getting error when I run the application. I tried various other ways like giving the complete path like <sitename>/<applicationname>/<v.folder name>/<filename>.I tried this on both IIS 6.0 and IIS 7.0.

I need to change the location of a web service. During development, I've made a reference to a web service in my local computer in my Visual Studio web site, and with the following command I use it
Dim LoginService As localhost.IPelosaLoginservice = New localhost.IPelosaLoginservice
Because I used localhost it works fine even after deploying to a production web server.
By adding a web reference in Visual Studio, the web.config is update with a key containing the name of the service and the path.
Now I need for one customer to change the path of the web service (because they work with a modified one). How do I do this? I've changed the path in the web.config, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.
I can't believe that you have to change you're code, add another web reference and deploy the program. There must be a better way, since I want the code for the web sites for alle the customers to be the same.

When my ASP.NET site uses documents (e.g. XML), I normally load the document as follows:
Server.MapPath("~DocumentsMyDocument.xml")
However, I would like to move the Documents folder out of the website folder so that it is now a sibling of the website folder. This will make maintaining the documents considerably easier.
However, rewriting the document load code as follows:
Server.MapPath("../../Documents/MyDocument.xml")
results in a complaint from ASP.NET that it cannot 'exit above the top directory'.
how I can relatively specify the location of a folder outside the website folder? I really don't want to specify absolute paths for the obvious deployment reasons.

I am developing a website in MVC 2.0. I want to change the View folder location in my website. I wanted to keep the views folder inside other folders, When I try to do so i am getting following errors
The view 'Index' or its master was not found. The following locations were searched:
~/Views/Search/Index.aspx
~/Views/Search/Index.ascx
~/Views/Shared/Index.aspx
~/Views/Shared/Index.ascx
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
My Views folder will be in ~/XYZ/ABC/Views instead of ~/Views. Will I get any problems If I change the default Views folder location. Do I need to change anything in HTML Helper classes because I don't know anything in MVC as this is my starting project i dont want to risk.

I implemented the Location tag in the web.config file to authorize the anonymous users for Images folder. I deployed the code in IIS6.0 with Forms authentication mode enabled for the virtual directory. I disabled all other authentication modes. When I browse the login page, Images are not displaying. When I set Anonymous authentication in IIS6.0 for the Image folder, it works fine.
See below the code implemented in web.config:
