Security :: Which User Account Should Be Granted Access To App_Themes Folder

Apr 9, 2010

the only way to make themes work is to allow user "Everyone" to access the folder App_Themes. I am wondering if a more specific user instead of "Everyone" can be granted the access to allow themems work.Account "IIS_IUSRS" and "NETWORK SERVICE" have already been granted access. This is about folder access of Windows 7 running IIS7, not web page authorization configured via web.config. Configuration :: Sending Email & IIS 7 Permissions Error?

Aug 21, 2010

I'm trying to send an email. My code is fine, but I'm getting a permissions error:

This is a server I'm administering myself, so I have access to the IIS 7 panel. The trouble is I don't know what to set to get mail working. Anyone got any experience of this?

My permissions error:

Access to the path 'c:7c5658db-d4cd-40cf-a686-6e9630e287f9.eml' is denied.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'c:7c5658db-d4cd-40cf-a686-6e9630e287f9.eml' is denied.

ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.

To grant ASP.NET access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access._______________________________

Configuration :: File Permissions For .aspx Files On Windows Server 2008?

Jul 7, 2010

I am running a web-site with simple .aspx files on a standalone workgroup Windows Server 2008 called 'Max'.I had assumed that the .aspx files were accessed by the 'Network Service' account. The application pool for the website is running with 'Network Service' as the process account.I was puzzled, since 'Network Service' had no permission on these files. So I added event level auditing to the files, and I was suprised to learn that the .aspx files were being accessed by an account called Max$ (ie the computer account).this correct ?Why is the Network Service account not being used ??

User Permissions On Certain Views Based On Roles?

Feb 23, 2011

I am using ASP.NET MVC 3. We assign roles to certain people at work, then we use Windows authentication to determine what roles a user has. Lets say the roles are RoleA, RoleB and RoleC. So now I get a list of roles for a user. Lets says that UserA belongs to RoleA and RoleB. Some of my views need to be authenticated as not everyone can view certain views. Lets say that ViewA can only be viewed by users that belong to roles RoleA and RoleB. How would I do this? What would I need to look into? When a user that does not belong to these roles tries to access the views then he/she should be redirected to an error page.

Security :: Impersonation Error / .NET User Account Has To Be Given Permissions To Access The Folder

Jun 18, 2010

I wrote an asp.net application that I'm trying to run on a godaddy domain I bought. I need to read a file in a folder that I did not give read access to so that your average user cannot see in the informaion in that folder. I assumed that the asp.net program would have the same credentials as myself because server-side code. Turns out I am wrong. When I go to use the asp.net application it throws an access denied error saying that the ASP.NET user account has to be given permissions to access the folder.

After talking to two different tech support people at godaddy I've come to the realization that they are either dumb or lazy (or a combo of the two).I came across some code that you can put into the web.config file that would allow the asp.net application to impersonate a user, which would work great to use myself as the impersonated user. However it seems that godaddy cannot give me the name of the server that my domain is on (that's understandable) so I don't know what to put in the identity tag to get this to work.

Here is the code I found:

[Code]....

(of course I filled in the username and password with the correct info)

When I went to use it again it threw this error:

System.Web.HttpException: The current identity (PHX3username) does not have write access to 'C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Temporary ASP.NET Files'.

Security :: Impression Worked But Access Not Granted?

Dec 8, 2010

I have a directory of images that I can't allow to be accessed by a user guessing and directly typing in a correct image URL. This image must be available to my ASP.NET application if it decides the user is okay to see the image. My first thought on how to do this is to block a regular user from the directory but allow the user that ASP.NET uses to have access. I'm using IIS on a Windows 2003 server and developing in ASP.NET 2.0. I was under the impression that this setup would use the NetworkService account. We set permissions to only allow the NetworkService access to the directory. When we first tested this it seemed to work... the ASP.NET app could load the images into a page and direct URL typins of an image's location just prompted the user for a password. Later we noticed even the ASP.NET app pages were prompting for a password. We checked and the account being used was no longer the network service account but an anonymous user instead. I tried using impersonation and setting up another account with read access. The impersonation worked but access was not granted (maybe impersonation isn't good for this sort of thing?). I am stuck at this point with no clue why the account being used changed and everything we try failing. Does anyone know what might be going on or have a better solution to my original problem?

Configuration :: Server Trust Level And Twitter Application Interface - Error "System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, Mscorlib"

Oct 14, 2010

There seems to be an issue with the "Trust" level when executing within a "Cloud" environment. In order for the following app to work it needs a trust level of at least "Medium." This web app is developed using VB.NET 3.5, and Visual Studio 2008. The app works perfectly on my local sever but when deployed/published to the "Cloud" it returns the error: System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I have added all 4 required values, ConsumerKey, ConsumerSecret, OAuthToken, and OAuthTokenSecret to the web.config file in the "appSettings" section of the "configuration"

[Code]....

If found that by going to [URL] and signing into the account that is using the application, then go to the "Settings" page, go to the bottom of the page and click on the "API" menu option. Once the API page appears you will clik on the button "2", Register An App. On the right side on the new page, you will see a button "View Your Applications." If you have previously registered your app, click this button, If not fill out the appliction for a new app. Now at the View your Applications page, select the app you want to get the authorization keys for where is says "Edit Details". Now click on the button to the right that says, "Application Detail." Here you will find your Consumer Key and your Consumer Secret Key. On the right side of this page you will see the menu option "My Access Token", click it and you will find your oauth_token and your oauth_token_secret keys! Not that you have all the keys, put them in the "appSettings" section of the web.config file. Add "Dim twConn As New TwitterVB2.TwitterAPI" at the top of the page.

I then created a subroutine where I pass in the Tweet:

[Code]....

This code works great in an enviornment that allows at least a "Medium" trust level. However it appears that many of the "new" hosting envrionments such as "Cloud Hosting" and others do not allow this trust level automatically! However if the trust level is less than "Medium" on your host you will likely receive the error message: "Twitter Returned: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed." If anyone has found a fix for this "Trust Level"

SQL Server :: An Insufficient Number Of Arguments Were Supplied For The Procedure Of Function

Feb 1, 2011

I am maintaining a sql proc someone else wrote long ago. Basically I have a stored procedure which calls a function. If I try to run the stored procedure, or to make changes to it, and then run it, I am getting an error message which says "An insufficient number of arguments were supplied for the procedure of function dbo.GetRecentComment

This is very odd, because the stored procedure runs successfully when called via the C# code. Yet if it is run within query analyzer with the correct parameters, I get that error message. Here is a little peice of the stored proc which calls the function. And below that is the function which is being called. It appears that the second parameter passed to the function is optional, yet I am not sure. Anyway, here is some of the code from the proc, which calls the function.

SELECT CompletionDate, dbo.GetRecentComment(Request.RequestId) AS Comments -- This line is where the function is called FROM Request

Here is the function which is being called

ALTER FUNCTION [dbo].[GetRecentComment]
(
@RequestId int,
@SmallTag bit -- smalltag appears to be optional.
)
RETURNS VARCHAR(500)
AS
BEGIN
