Connection Property Has Not Been Initialized

Dec 27, 2014

In some posts I have read on other forums, those with database connection problems (I am thinking about Access) sometimes get the error: 'Connection property has not been initialized' which might translate as 'you have not kick-started your connection'. One reason for that, according to a number of replies I have come across, is that 'you have not set the connection property of the command object' ('you have not told command how to connect').

So would something like this:

Code:
Dim conn As New OleDbConnection
Dim OleDbConnection As New OleDbConnection
Dim cmd As New OleDbCommand
conn.ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=|DataDirectory|myDatabase.mdb;"
conn.Open()
cmd = New OleDbCommand("SELECT strName FROM school WHERE strName=@strName", conn)
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@strName", UserName.Text)
cmd.Connection = conn
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
conn.Close()

a) initialise the connection property and b) set the connection property of the command object?

Connection String Property Has Not Been Initialized Error

Aug 1, 2012

I am getting above mentioned error when I try to run the following code:

Private strConnString As String = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("conString").ConnectionString
Private con As New SqlConnection(strConnString)
Private pID As Integer
'FIRST SECTION
Dim query As String = "query"
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand(query)

[Code] .....

The error is coming from the second SQL cmd but if I comment out the first section; the second section runs fine.

I must have made another basic error but I just can't figure out what it is.

what I want to do is:

while (pr.Read()) project.Items.Add(new ListItem(reader[0].ToString(), reader[1].ToString()));

C# - With What Methods Can I Dynamically Set An ASPX Control Property Before It Is Initialized

May 19, 2010

I need to configure a property of a custom control I wrote, specifically before the control calls OnInit. If I assign it as part of the ASPX file, it naturally works, but if I instead move the assignment to different parts of the code-behind, it will throw an error for having an empty and invalid value. The following is what it looks like when functional in the ASPX page.

<MyCustomControls:SingleCascadeLookupMulti FilterString="Seventh" FilterByStatus="true" ControlMode="New" FieldName="Speciality" EnableViewState="true" ID="sclmDocuments" runat="server" TemplateName="SingleCascadeLookupMulti" />

The property in question is FilterString, which is just a simple string. It should be noted as well that the FieldName property (inheritted from the control's base class "BaseFieldControl") would also throw an error if it is not initialized, but if I set FieldName in the code behind's OnInit method, it works correctly. FilterString is not so, it won't actually be assigned. So I know that some methods for certain properties will work for setting the property's value, but it won't always work. I tried placing it in OnPreInit as well, to no avail.

I am taking a dynamic assignment approach because the functionality of this page needs to be replicated for a number of different lists, and the FilterString and FieldName properties will differ in every case. Rather than write half a dozen mostly-identical aspx pages all with the same code behind but differing just in what those two properties are, I figured it would be wiser to use the page's query string and some derived parameters to set those properties dynamically. As such, what methods are available to accomplish this task?

The Connection Property In The Web.config File Is Missing Or Incorrect?

Nov 10, 2010

I have myConnectionString and it's working fine. In the Server Explorer, the Data Connection is even using myConnectionString to connect to the database. When I created my .dbml, it uses that same yConnectionString. However, now whenever I opened the .dbml file, pops up with the following message:The connection property in the web.config file is missing or incorrect.The connection string from the .dbml file has been used in its place.After this message is display and I clicked okay (because that's the only option), it creates myConnectionString2 in the web.config file with a different ID but no password provided. What is this all about? Why is it creating a second connection string with a different ID?

DataSource Controls :: Unable To Alter Connection Timout Property?

Feb 22, 2010

Im using two stored procedures to write and update values in a SQL DB. Im using the SQLDatasource update method. When I run the webpage on my development server everything runs fine. When I try and run the web page on my Live server I get the following error :System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding This always takes 30 seconds to fail - and looking at google it seems that this is a connection timeout error.In my web.config file I have updated the connectionstring line to include a timeout setting :

connectionString="Data Source=myserver;Initial Catalog=ReportServer;Integrated Security=True;Connect
Timeout=10000"

But this hasn't helped at all.

AJAX :: ERROR: The PageRequestManager Cannot Be Initialized More Than Once?

Nov 19, 2010

I'm loading a .aspx page via fancybox (ajax loading mode).I was using fancybox 1.2.6, working fine, then upgraded to fancybox 1.3.4 and IE now triggers the JS error above (in the subject of the post). Then why am I posting on ASP.net forum you might ask?!?... read on...Debugging the JS code, the error happens inside jQuery in the .html(data) function where it does a evalScript .each scripts inside data. jQuery version is 1.4.2.I'm able to resolve the problem by editing fancybox-1.3.4.js at line 265. I just use innerHTML to circuvent the evalScript that occurs inside html()... and it works:

//tmp.html( data ); <-- original code commented out where JS error occured
var tmpDiv = tmp.get(0); <-- new "plaster" kind-of fix
tmpDiv.innerHTML = data; <-- new "plaster" kind-of fix

Why I'm posting on ASP.net and not on jQuery nor fancybox groups is that I consider that the proper fix would be in the .aspx that is loaded via ajax.To summarize the problem. There is a base .aspx page that has a couples of text and buttons. When you click a button, it loads via AJAX a new .aspx page (using fancybox). You end up with two ScriptManager js code and it triggers an error when executing :

//<![CDATA[
Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager._initialize('ctl00$ScriptManager', document.getElementById('aspnetForm'));
Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance()._updateControls([], [], [], 90);

Initialized From A Static .js File Using A Selector?

Mar 23, 2011

I'm using jQuery tabs, which are initialized from a static .js file using a selector:

$()
.ready(function () {
$('.jqTabsStandard').tabs();
});

I'm using ASP.NET (not that it makes a difference I think), but when I click a button in one of the tabs, is there a way I can re-select that tab when the page reloads. I was thinking of sticking the tab section in an UpdatePanel. I was hoping there's a way I could trigger the tab to reselect.

Controls Initialized With Their Design Time Values?

Jan 19, 2010

Am I right in assuming that only after controls on Master page are merged into the control tree for the Page, can controls ( both those in Master page and in a content Page ) be initialized with their declarative values ( values set during design time)? b) If my above assumption is correct, then these controls cannot be initialized with their design-time values during Page.PreInit, since during Page.PreInit event stage we're still able to dynamically set a Master page?! So if that is the case, when are controls initialized with their declarative values? During Init event orâ€

AJAX :: Run A Function Associated With Custom Control After It Is Initialized?

Mar 31, 2010

How do I run a function associated with my custom control after it is initialized? So for example, after the control has initialized (ie is loaded) I need to finalize some properties. But since it is composed of a number of other controls, I need to know all the controls are present. I've tried add_load but I can't seem to get the context right to see my contol's specific functions. If I place the onLoad metod in the main class (javascript) definition, the contol id dosen't exist yet, same for in the prototype.

Since the control id dosen't exist yet I need to wait for the load event but now i'm in a chicken and egg problem. How do I create a method of my control class and call it "after" initilization? Seems like a simple question but it hasn't been so easy to find an answer.

When I run my code, I get the null reference exception on grid object in the base control. I missing something in control inheritance? at what point do inner controls get created?

C# - Show And Position An Image Initialized In The Codebehind On Page?

<% SendImage("DKBygMiniLogo.gif", "True"); %>

Here is the simple method:

protected Image SendImage(object Image, object Approved)
{
bool approved = Convert.ToBoolean(Approved);
Image img = new Image();
if (approved)
{
img.ImageUrl = "~/images/Ads/" + Image.ToString();
img.Visible = true;

img.Visible = false;

return img;

Web Forms :: Dynamically Creating Instance Of Ascx - Controls Not Being Initialized?

Jul 29, 2010

apologies beforehand for what can possibly be a daft conceptual question. I have an ascx control that has a bunch of ASP labels and buttons in the ascx page and some other public methods and properties in the code behind. When I drop this ascx control in a page it all works fine. I now have a page with a placeholder and I am trying to dynamically create an instance of my ascx control and put it there. I then reference this control in code and while all public methods and properties are available (ie MyControl.TitleString = "Hello";MyControl.DoSomething();) none of the ASP controls are. Rather, they are all null. So MyControl.buttonSave is null, MyControl.LabelTitle is null, etc. Is this by design? Am I missing something? If not, what's the point of being able to create dynamically do this?

Web Forms :: Use Master Page - Controls Created During Design Time Initialized?

Jan 18, 2010

a) Assuming a page has a master page associated with it, then all controls (those declared in master page and those declared in content page) created during design time are assigned declarative values only during an Init event? I'm assuming this since to my understanding controls need first to be put into the control tree before they can be assigned their declarative values? And when page has a master page associated with it, then aren't page's controls put into the control tree only during the Pre_Init or perhaps even during the Init event? Then if that is the case, then isn't the earliest that these controls can be assigned their declarative values during Init event?

b) Assuming our page is associated with Master page and also uses a theme --> skin files are also applied during an Init event, so I assume that during an Init event Asp.Net first initializes controls to their declarative values and only then applies skin rules to them?
