C# - With What Methods Can I Dynamically Set An ASPX Control Property Before It Is Initialized
May 19, 2010
I need to configure a property of a custom control I wrote, specifically before the control calls OnInit. If I assign it as part of the ASPX file, it naturally works, but if I instead move the assignment to different parts of the code-behind, it will throw an error for having an empty and invalid value. The following is what it looks like when functional in the ASPX page.
<MyCustomControls:SingleCascadeLookupMulti FilterString="Seventh" FilterByStatus="true" ControlMode="New" FieldName="Speciality" EnableViewState="true" ID="sclmDocuments" runat="server" TemplateName="SingleCascadeLookupMulti" />
The property in question is FilterString, which is just a simple string. It should be noted as well that the FieldName property (inheritted from the control's base class "BaseFieldControl") would also throw an error if it is not initialized, but if I set FieldName in the code behind's OnInit method, it works correctly. FilterString is not so, it won't actually be assigned. So I know that some methods for certain properties will work for setting the property's value, but it won't always work. I tried placing it in OnPreInit as well, to no avail.
I am taking a dynamic assignment approach because the functionality of this page needs to be replicated for a number of different lists, and the FilterString and FieldName properties will differ in every case. Rather than write half a dozen mostly-identical aspx pages all with the same code behind but differing just in what those two properties are, I figured it would be wiser to use the page's query string and some derived parameters to set those properties dynamically. As such, what methods are available to accomplish this task?

In some posts I have read on other forums, those with database connection problems (I am thinking about Access) sometimes get the error: 'Connection property has not been initialized' which might translate as 'you have not kick-started your connection'. One reason for that, according to a number of replies I have come across, is that 'you have not set the connection property of the command object' ('you have not told command how to connect').
So would something like this:
Code:
Dim conn As New OleDbConnection
Dim OleDbConnection As New OleDbConnection
Dim cmd As New OleDbCommand
conn.ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=|DataDirectory|myDatabase.mdb;"
conn.Open()
cmd = New OleDbCommand("SELECT strName FROM school WHERE strName=@strName", conn)
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@strName", UserName.Text)
cmd.Connection = conn
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
conn.Close()
a) initialise the connection property and b) set the connection property of the command object?

I have some Class A, which is data-layer in my web-application, and I'm using A's methods to accomplish Db operations. It looks like this.
[code]...
In case when my .aspx page calls 2 methods of class A during the postback, my page throws
"The ConnectionString property has not been initialized" exception for second method call.
I tried to put _sqlcon initialization into constructor, but it still throws exception.

I have been looking through the event viewer on our server and can see quite a few people with this error but I can't replicate this myself but it is causing issues for people viewing our website is there anyway I can "initialize" Command Text property?
UPDATE
So I have this query
datelistquery = "SELECT DISTINCT property_id, ' - Sleeps ' + cast(number_slept as varchar) as combsleeps, number_slept FROM openquery ("+Application("hpbDsrc")+",'SELECT property_id, number_slept FROM web_details WHERE part_full_flag = ''F'' AND location = ''"&Session("TenChosenLocCode")&"'' AND property_id = ''"&Session("passedPropId")&"'' AND pets_yn like ''"&Session("TenPets")&"'' AND number_slept >= ''"&Session("TenAdults")&"'' AND year_week = ''"&Session("TenHolStDateHP1")&"'' AND on_hold = ''NO'' AND booked = ''NO'' ') ORDER BY number_slept, property_id"
So should I put at the start sqlCommand.CommandText(datelistquery) = "Select Distinct...."

I am getting above mentioned error when I try to run the following code:
Private strConnString As String = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("conString").ConnectionString
Private con As New SqlConnection(strConnString)
Private pID As Integer
'FIRST SECTION
Dim query As String = "query"
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand(query)
[Code] .....
The error is coming from the second SQL cmd but if I comment out the first section; the second section runs fine.
I must have made another basic error but I just can't figure out what it is.

apologies beforehand for what can possibly be a daft conceptual question. I have an ascx control that has a bunch of ASP labels and buttons in the ascx page and some other public methods and properties in the code behind. When I drop this ascx control in a page it all works fine. I now have a page with a placeholder and I am trying to dynamically create an instance of my ascx control and put it there. I then reference this control in code and while all public methods and properties are available (ie MyControl.TitleString = "Hello";MyControl.DoSomething();) none of the ASP controls are. Rather, they are all null. So MyControl.buttonSave is null, MyControl.LabelTitle is null, etc. Is this by design? Am I missing something? If not, what's the point of being able to create dynamically do this?

This may be a very dumb question but I can't seem to get it working. I use at many places the following syntax for dynamically binding a property of a control in aspx file to the resource entry, e.g.
<SomeFunnyControl Text="<%$ Resources : ResClass, ResEntry %>" />
I want to do a similar thing with a class containing some constants, something like
<SomeFunnyControl Text="<%= MyConstantsClass.MyStringConstant %>" />
But this doesn't seem to work, it simply sets the text to the exact expression without evaluating it. I am using ASP.NET 3.5 btw.
I have tried the databinding approach but I get an HttpParseException saying Databinding expressions are only supported on objects that have a DataBinding event.

I am trying to setup my page with a drop down which value comes from one SQL query and item list comes from another SQL query to the same database...
what I want to do is:
read 1 line from bugs table. this line includes a projectid which will be the value of the drop down. I also read the projects table for active projects/id and load this as drop down items....
using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString))
{
conn.Open();
using (SqlCommand bug = new SqlCommand(
"SELECT bugs.id, bugs.projectid, bugs.typeid, bugs.subtypeid, bugs.version, bugs.summary, " +
"users.email AS creator, bugs.createddate, bugs.text, bugs.closeddate, bugs.history " +
"FROM bugs INNER JOIN users ON bugs.creatorid = users.id WHERE (bugs.id = @idd)", conn))
{
bug.Parameters.AddWithValue("idd", Request.QueryString["ID"]);
try
{
SqlDataReader reader = bug.ExecuteReader();
if (reader.Read())
{
String projectid = reader[1].ToString();
// read project name list...
using(conn) using (SqlCommand projects = new SqlCommand("SELECT name, id FROM projects WHERE active=true"))
try
{
SqlDataReader pr = projects.ExecuteReader(); // This line causes the exception... what am I doing wrong?
while (pr.Read()) project.Items.Add(new ListItem(reader[0].ToString(), reader[1].ToString()));
}
catch { }

I'm writing ASP.NET custom control, and I want it to have a few properties which should be visible only from code behind during run-time - I mean, these properties should not be visible both in a designer and in a aspx code of page containing this control. I've tried to use following attributes:
[DesignerSerializationVisibility(DesignerSerializationVisibility.Hidden)]
[Browsable(false)]
public List<Item> SomeData
{
...
}
but unfortunately this property is still visible in an Intellisense combobox when editing aspx page. Is it possible to hide this property everywhere besides server-side code ?

Is there a way to do something like this:
<asp:HyperLink id="MyLink"
NavigateUrl="../mypage.aspx?id=<%= pageid %>"
runat="server">My Page</asp:HyperLink>
... except in a way that works?
I want to do this inline in a normal HyperLink control that is not databound.
Edit:
Got some good answers, but what I'm looking for is how to do this specifically in a normal HyperLink (not in a DataGrid/GridView) and inline (not via a function call or code behind).

There is one user control say uControl.ascx. This has a public property Message. There are 2 aspx pages Default.aspx and Home.aspx which has the user control uControl.ascx. When a sumit button from Default.aspx is clicked some action takes place and the value for Message is set and then execution is redirected to Home.aspx. In Home.aspx the value for Message is lost.
Is there anyways that the value of Message is retained for both the aspx pages?

How do I run a function associated with my custom control after it is initialized? So for example, after the control has initialized (ie is loaded) I need to finalize some properties. But since it is composed of a number of other controls, I need to know all the controls are present. I've tried add_load but I can't seem to get the context right to see my contol's specific functions. If I place the onLoad metod in the main class (javascript) definition, the contol id dosen't exist yet, same for in the prototype.
Since the control id dosen't exist yet I need to wait for the load event but now i'm in a chicken and egg problem. How do I create a method of my control class and call it "after" initilization? Seems like a simple question but it hasn't been so easy to find an answer.

I have an asp page "A" and I've created a user control "B"
When I do A.Controls.Add(B), I would like to make an element, say a TableRow which is defined inside control "B", invisible via code behind.
When looking through Controls of "A", I cannot seem to find that table row.

I was thinking about the performance when I use code to hide some control in aspx page using delimiters or in cs file. For e.g. If I have a panel and I want it to get shown following some condition, so I can achieve this by two ways
1: Using code in aspx file, something like this
<% if(isAllowed) { %>
<asp:Panel ...></asp:Panel>
<% } %>
2: In the code file, something like this
<asp:Panel ID="pnlMyPanel" Visible="false"></asp:Panel>
And in cs file
if(isAllowed)
pnlMyPanel.Visible=true;
In my view, first way should be good as it will not at all create any Panel in the page. Am I correct here?

I have got 3 aspx page and a usercontrol on each page have an email placeholder in it. What I want to acheive is when the customer click on the usercontrol email placeholder, certain method on a particular page should trigger. See below for the code:
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Web;
using System.Web.UI;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls;
using System.Text;
using Tangent.Breakingfree;
[Code]....
Also I have got another method on a different aspx page, I want to trigger that method when the client is on that page. The user control should trigger the right method depending on the page user is currently on.

Is it possible to do something like this inline in an ASPX page?
<%= Me.SomeExtensionMethod() %>
I can't seem to figure out how to get this to work properly. I'm receiving an error saying that "SomeExtensionMethod" is not a member of the current Page object. I've added the necessary <%@ Import Namespace="..." %> directive at the top of my page. This Does work in code-behind.This isn't vitally important, but it would be good to know how to do in the future.
