Why method FindControl() returns null on FormView until call DataBind(). After that it returns everything correctly? What workaround are there? Call DataBind() before first call of FindControl() ?

Basically, I have a repeater control, and a Linq query that retrieves some items. Ordinarily I would databind straight to the query and use Eval to populate the template with the results.
However, it doesn't come through in quite the right format - for example, if EndDate is null (it's a DateTime?) then I want to substitute it with "Present". I am using only a couple of the properties in the query result objects.
I am wondering if there's a solution like:
[pseudo madeup code]
var query = getResults();
List<anonymous> anonList = new List();
foreach (var q in query)
{
string myEndDate = "";
if (q.EndDate.HasValue)
{ myEndDate = q.EndDate.ToString(); }
else
{ myEndDate = "Present"; }
anonList.items.add(new { name=q.name, enddate=myEndDate };
}
repeater.Datasource = anonList;
then
<div><%#Eval("enddate")%></div>

in datalist templatefield, i want to bind an imagebutton's visible property. the scenario is .. it is a picture comments page like one in facebook. if its your own comment, the delete button is shown, otherwise not. the problem is .. for the imagebutton i want to set visible = false, if the user logged in is the same user as the one who commented. how can i do that ?
currently im using this code on datalist databind event. but the label is returned as null
public bool set_visibility()
{
Label lb = DataList3.FindControl("Label7") as Label;
if (lb.Text == Session["user_id"].ToString())
return true;
else
return false;
}
findcontrol dosent return the control.

I need to build an address list gridiview that has 3 search boxes - First Name, Surname, Address. How do i set it up so you can use one of 3 different where clauses? or possible 2 where clauses prior to the databind??
I dont want to search / filter a gridview that has already been databind, i want the search to go straight to the DB if possible.

i'm opening a new window and passing on to it variables in a querystring, the values are loaded into a function that is filling my dataset and then filling my Gridview. after i press the button field in my grid to delete an item, the databind doesn't show the updated grid but remains the same. i've noticed that if i navigate back and refresh i see it correctly. in FF btw no problem.
the code:
this is used to open the new window

I am trying to call a Page Method using AJAX.
See the code
<asp:Button ID="btn_upload" runat="server" CssClass="btnEffects" Text="Upload"
onclick="btn_upload_Click" OnClientClick="return Validate();" />
Validate method is supposed to return true/false. The code for Validate method is
<script language="javascript">
function Validate()
{
var filename = $get('<%= txt_filename.ClientID %>').value;
PageMethods.IsValidFile(filename,OnSuccess, OnFailure);
// IsValidFile is a Page Method of bool return type
}
function OnSuccess(result)
{
if ( !result)
{
alert('File '+ $get('<%= txt_filename.ClientID %>').value + ' does not exist');
return false;
}
else
{
return true;
}
}
function OnFailure(error)
{
}
</script>
My problem is that even after showing the alert 'File somefilename does not exist'. The whole page refreshes (i.e, postback happens)

I currently have two roles like this:
[PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand,
Role="DomainAdmin")]
[PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand,
Role="DomainAnotherRole")]
The problem is that this inherited code is specific to the domain, and I want to eventually get the roles from the web.config file, so I can work on a VM not in the domain. have seen an example like this:
PrincipalPermission permCheck = new PrincipalPermission(
null,
@"DomainAdmin");
permCheck.Demand();
Since this throws an exception if user is not in role, how do I change this example to allow either of the two roles? I could use multiple IPrincipal.IsInRole() and then throw my own exception, but seems like there is probably a way to use the .Demand method with multiple roles. Update 12/21: Sample Code based on Union link from Ladislav's answer below:
PrincipalPermission ppAdmin = new PrincipalPermission(null, @"DomainAdmin");
PrincipalPermission ppAnother = new PrincipalPermission(null, @"DomainAnotherRole");
(ppAdmin.Union(ppAnother)).Demand();

I have the following statement, I want to turn it into a Public Shared Function :
If isEmployee Then
Dim employeeInstance As New Employee
employeeInstance = GetEmployeeInstanceByUserId(userId)
Return employeeInstance
Else
Dim studentInstance As New Student
studentInstance = GetStudentInstanceByUserId(userId)
Return studentInstance
End If
Public Shared Function GetWorkerInstance(Byval isEmployee as Boolean) As ...(not sure what to write here)...
There two possible return Type. I'm not sure what I should declare for the function return type.

I have a Web Forms app that uses forms authentication. I have a Crystal Reports Server 2008 V1 server with InfoView .NET installed and working. I have some Enterprise accounts setup. EDIT: I should mention that my Web Forms app is on a different server from Crystal Reports Server.
I need to know how to log on to InfoView .NET programmatically on my custom ASP .NET page (C#) and then transfer the user to InfoView without them having to type in the logon information.
Something like this would be nice (C#):
string username = "blah";
string password = "asdf";
// create logon token for crystal reports server
// .. // this is the code I need
Response.Redirect(url);
I did find this question, which gets me partway there, but it doesn't tell me how to pass the token to InfoView .NET. Some older docs also mention needing a cookie. I've also found other sites that show how to pass it to Java InfoView, but I need the .NET version.

I have advice that this might work for programmatically filling a set of literals from a set of object properties:-
[code]....
However, the line: ctl.Text = pageData.help(i).trim() fails because it's not understood that pageData.help(i) should translate to pageData.help1, pageData.help2, etc.

In a recent post, I expressed a need to access the properties for the body using declarative syntax, see
Contentplaceholder for replacing attributes?
But, the syntax confuses the editor which is not acceptable.
My hypothesis for a workable solution is to make the change in code. To derive a class from System.Web.UI.Page with extended functionality. However, I want for the designer to be able to still use declarative syntax to set the body tag.
I do not want to have to change any code in my aspx web pages except that they derive from base I want to be able to set these properties using declarative syntax, merely by adding a tag in the derived page I'm not immediately sure how to go about doing this because it doesn't exactly fit the OOP paradigm and I'm not sure where the changes need to be made.
I can use a findcontrol in the base to see if the placeholder has been added. But, not sure exactly at what point in the page processing lifecycle that I can use this findcontrol. I need to set the body before it renders but also be able to grab something from the declarative code.

I am databinding a SqlDatasource to a GridView in 2 different ways.
1) Declaring the SqlDatasource in the .aspx page and setting the DatasourceID property on the GridView to its id
2) Creating the SqlDatasource in the code behind and binding to the datasource property
When I use the declarative method (1), sorting works fine without any extra work on my part, but If I create the SqlDatasource in the code behind and try to sort, I get an exception saying 'The GridView 'myGridView' fired event Sorting which wasn't handled'.
I assume that there is some sort of extra plumbing that occurs when using the first method. Does anyone know what the datasourceid method does that the programmatic one doesn't? I would like to duplicate the logic in the code behind if possible.

I need to POST to an external HTTPS url from my application. I am looking for a 'robust' way to do this, in code if possible.
I would just like to use error handling etc, rather than just blinding doing the normal post and hoping it works.
Can you do HTTPS POST from some page event using server side code?

Is there a way to do this in either scalar function form or in an aggregate function form? The problem I'm dealing with is building a security system with multiple tiers of inheritable permissions. Like you'll inherit certain permissions form the department level and then certain permissions from the supervisor level. I'd like to find a way to produce these resultsFor user permissions I pull these binary values and get these results, (they are sorted by their tree node depth level in the hierarchy.

I want to create a function which would have two parameters
public **XYZ** GetOputput(string strToConvert, **ABC**)
What I want from this function, that I will send a string to this function and the datatype in which I want to convert this string [Ex: Int32,Int64, datetime etc..] and the return will be the same as the datatype I have sent as the input parameter.
I want to have something like this in my function:

Does it look like I will be stuck with manually compiling the tables of departmentpermissions and supervisorpermissions base on every possible outcome of inherited permissions or is there a way to do this on the fly in an efficient manner?

I have a Save button in my page. When user clicks it, the program will do some checking. If it passes the test, the record will be saved. If not, it will fire another button's onclick event. The 2nd button has been set with both height and width = 0 and it has an extender AJAX ModalPopup.
Here is the code for the 1st button (the visible Save button):
[Code]....
Problem is that setting height and width = 0 for the 2nd button can make the button invisible in IE. But it shows a very small button in Chrome. If I set the 2nd button to invisible, it simply won't function at all.

I have a SQL which is running good at SQL Server Mgm studio:
"select d.EmployeeID, CONVERT(VARCHAR(10),d.LogTime,111) as Date1, MIN(CONVERT(VARCHAR(8), d.LogTime, 108)) as FirstIn
from LogTable d where d.dwStatus=0 group by d.EmployeeID, CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), d.LogTime,111)"
However, When i put it into my code (Entity SQL):
"select d.EmployeeID, CONVERT(VARCHAR(10),d.LogTime,111) as Date1, MIN(CONVERT(VARCHAR(8), d.LogTime, 108)) as FirstIn
from IGPSiteEntities.AccessLogSet AS d where d.dwStatus=0 group by d.EmployeeID, CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), d.LogTime,111)"
I got error :
'CONVERT' cannot be resolved into a valid type of function. Near simple identifier, line1, column 200.
LogTime is a DateTime format e.g 05/05/2010 14:12:12
I want to select ONLY the Date (e.g 05/05/2010) and select ONLY the time (e.g 14:12:12) so i use CONVERT function.

Sorry, not sure if this is the right place for this. I have a requirement to convert Word, Excel and HTML docs to PDF format programmatically, but most information online seems to be talking about client side. What is the best approach for this. I think there would be about 100 conversions a day in production. It's not high volume.

I am trying to write a function that can be called to run a stored procedure. I pass the stored procedure name, followed by as many parameters as I need to run the procedure. I am able to do this by using the params keyword, so my function looks something like this;
[Code]....
How can I determine what the data type of the parameter is? Maybe I need to alter the string[] part, above?

i have the following scenario: one formview. when in editmode there is a child formview linked to the other by a column value. i need to take the value of one of the values of parent formview controls and set it to a textbox of child formview in insert mode. I wish to know which event should I use in codebehind to bind both controls? (that escenario will have paging and must keep the binding as if it was master detail)
