I have a gridview with two textboxes (first name & last name) and a linkbutton to search results inside the gridview.
I have made select parameters as well and the search works if i write in both textboxes. However, if I leave one textbox blank, i don't get any results.

I am new to LINQ but not >net. I do understand SQLDataSource, etc. I was just told by a coworker not to use a LINQ to SQL Class for my new project (Bank.dbml). I was told to use instead the ADO.Net Entity Data Model (bank.edmx).

When only using ADO.Net Entity Data Model I try to associate a GridView with a new LinqDataSource I get no options. When I add a LINQ to SQL Class I get the option to use it but it is empty. Is this because all my LINQ classes are mapped in the ADO.Net Entity Data Model (bank.edmx)? Can someone tell me (or point me to) what the differences are in these two?
I wanna join all the field as a new col.
but how can i ignore the empty field because i always join the field and separate by space like the following.

but if the field is empty, then there is the double space
how can i ensure all the space is one space only.
I have a simple sql server table with around 20 fields in it. I have created an asp.net page which shows the ecords in a gridview & then the selected record in a formview. There may be cases of multiple users editing the same record so i wanted to use the conflict detection in a sqlDataSource to inform users of the conflict. I managed to get this working where i replicated all 20 fields to create the equivalent original_XXX parameter.
BUT i was wondering whether it is possible to show all 20 fields but only use 1 (the date modified field) to check for data conflicts? I have tried to implement this in the following way:

But i've had no luck in getting it working. The conflict detection simply overwrites the changes instead of not allowing the changes and showing the specified error msg (in the onUpdated event). The examples and tutorials i've seen all seem to indicate that each field would need to be compared BUT why can't i simply compare a datetime field which records the last time a record has been updated? Surely, there has to be a better way of resolving the data conflicts than comparing every single field with it's original value?
It is about ASP.NET MVC3. I have a page with at the top some search criteria and at the bottom the resulting data. The user can type some criteria and use a submit button to retieve data. In my controller, I have an ActionResult function for managing these criteria and return to the same page with a ViewModel class filled.
The problem: the user can click on a line in the resulting table for viewing a detail page. On the detail page, he can navigate to an edit page for editing data. On this page (edit data) I would like to able the user to go back to the search result page (in fact: navigate back two times). What is the best way to proceed? If I "simply" use an ActionLink (without posting data) to my search result page, it will simply display an empty result page with empty search criteria. Maybe I need to keep my search criteria in a session variable? I don't like this kind of thing...

I have gridview that I am filling with records from SQL database. However, I want to populate the gridview with records that match text search criteria. In other words, I want to be able to key in a word like "network" in a text box, pick up the text, read records and pick up on the records that match that criteria. What is the best approach for keeping a user's search criteria saved in case they navigate back to the search page in MVC 2?
I was thinking of ViewData or creating a model that would keep that type of data.
Requirements call for the ability to save search values so that they can select them at later times to return the results without having to re-enter the values. They have the ability to search on 4 different types of data (Date, Time and Lat/Long), so they would like to capture what was entered and ONLY if they chose to save those values, it will be saved and next time they login, if they are searching, they can pick an old search and submit it again.
Im thinking that i add a checkbox next to each button, if they check it, it saves the data into a table with there values and username. Next time they login and go tothe search page, if there are any records for them in the table, i present them with a link that displays all the values stored and if they select one, it will run the search again and present them with the results. does that sound like the right way to handle this request?

The keyword can be null or something the user inputs. The type will be chosen from a drop down and can be all or a specific category. I know how to search the date, but the other two create complications. I have created a stored procedure trying to figure this out:

Is there a way to say if the keyword is null then don't use it as a search criteria. If that is possible then type can use that same logic I suppose.
I have a form that searches for images in a database. I have several DropDownLists with various search criteria e.g. Genus, Photographer, State, Project.I'd like the user to be able to filter using any combination of these. For example they might pick a specific photographer and a specific genus but choose not filter by project or state.I'd like to find a good, clean, elegent way to do this.Here is an example of the code I have now, it has only two possible criteria. I have a sql database that on some field will have a empty string/field. I am using a Datalist to display my results. How do I not make the labels that are empty not display? Currently if the field is empty it will leave a space there which my goal is if the field is empty do not leave a white space instead move the other colunms up.

I've got a query joining three tables....accounts, payments, and a table linking the two (there is a M:M relationship).I'm trying to pull a list of all accounts in the account table that have a payment that needs to be resequenced, and also the maximum payment priority if there are any payments that haven't been fully paid. If all payments HAVE been fully paid, I want to return a 0.
It's that last bit of logic that I can't get right. If I include that in the where clause, I get only the accounts that have a payment that hasn't been fully paid. If I take it out, I get all the accounts I get, but I get the highest payment priority whether or not the payment has been fully met.
Here is the query....how do I include the where clause criteria but still include all accounts?

Its working fine for PDF / doc files but not working for .JPG files.
Basically i have some document scanned and stored it in varbinnary datatype in DB.
I am able to search for .doc /.xml /.pdf files .. but not able to search .jpg.
also i am not getting ".jgp" extension in result of following query

I have a aspx page with a ascx control inside an ascx control and the required field validator is not hit on the action of the page.
The issue is with the 2nd nested ascx control. The field validators in the first ascx control validate correctly, but with the ascx control inside the ascx control there are issues.
The nested ascx control is a repeater control and this may be the reason, but I am unsure.
I'm not exactly sure what question to ask, but I'll list a few below.
How do I attach the field validators up a level to the 1st ascx control?
Is it possible to put required fields into a nested ascx control?
