DataSource Controls :: Preventing SqlCacheDependency From Invalidating A Cache Item While It Is Being Set?
Feb 9, 2010
I think it is a problem that SqlCacheDependency may invalidate a cache item while it is being set:
function getCacheItem()
if cacheitem is empty
cacheitem = something
AND AT THIS POINT SqlCacheDependency INVALIDATES THE cacheitem
end if
return cacheitem
end function
how can we prevent this? Is it somehow possible to specify a ReaderWriterLockSlim for the SqlCacheDependecy to use?

We have a CMS system and in the production mode a number of servers only have read-only access to the content (with a few exceptions) and the editors for the site work on the content on servers behind it (which are not available to the public).
We're caching the content quite a long time on the front servers, but sometimes we want the content the editors publish to be available for visitors instantly. What is best practice for invalidating the cache in those cases?

I am using sqlCacheDependency, and usually upon any changes in the database cache items get deleted automatically. In my case everything works allright, but I had to buy a new laptop and I moved the same exact database and the same exact webapplication to the new laptop. Unfortunately, on my new machine the cache items remain in cache upon data updates on the database.
I have enabled servicebroker on the database, and started it in the application_start event in my webapplication. I also ran the following:
GRANT SUBSCRIBE QUERY NOTIFICATIONS
TO "Naji-pcNaji"
The differance I see on my laptop from my other machine is that the database is named (local). Naji-pc is the name of my machine.

I have been trying to get SqlCacheDependency working. I think I have everything set up correctly, but when I update the table, the item in the Cache isn't invalidated.
I enabled the Service Broker for the Sandbox database.I have placed the following code in the Global.asax file. I also restart IIS to make sure it is called.
void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) {
SqlDependency.Start(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["SandboxConnectionString"].ConnectionString);
}
I have placed this entry in the web.config file:
<system.web>
<caching>
<sqlCacheDependency enabled="true" pollTime="10000">[code]....
I call this code to put the item into the cache:
protected void CacheDataSetButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) {
using (SqlConnection sqlConnection = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["SandboxConnectionString"].ConnectionString))[code].....
Then I bind the GridView with this code:
protected void BindGridViewButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) {
if (Cache["Pets"] != null) {
GridView1.DataSource = Cache["Pets"] as DataSet;
GridView1.DataBind();
}
}
Between attempts to DataBind the GridView, I change the table's values expecting it to invalidate the Cache["Pets"] item, but it seems to stay in the Cache indefinitely.

In my database I have altered stored procedure AspNet_SqlCacheRegisterTableStoredProcedure that is used for SqlCacheDependency to register tables that are in different schema then dbo (original procedure allows only tables for dbo schema).
That works, but I can't register same table name for different schemas, for example dbo.MyTable and MySchema.MyTable.In column tableName in table AspNet_SqlCacheTablesForChangeNotification there are only table names without schemas.
Is it possible to register same table names and different schemas?

I have setup and SqlCacheDependency for my site and all is working well, but there is one requirement in my task that I dont' seem to be able to find the workaround for. Currently, my code relies on the following web.config settings to allow the SqlCacheDependency to know where to connect to. it is like this:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="connstring1" connectionString="......" />
</connectionStrings>
<caching>
<sqlCacheDependency enabled="true" pollTime="500">
<databases>
<add name="db1" connectionStringName="connstring1" pollTime="500" />
</databases>
</sqlCacheDependency>
</caching>
The problem is that we can't allow in our application the connectionstring to be on the web.config. I am asked to programmatically do all of that. I don't know how and I don't know if that is even possible, is it?

I had been using the "regular" System.Data syntax to create connections on web forms, like:
dim conn As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("myconnStr").ConnectionString)
dim myCommand as SqlCommand
myCommand = new SqlCommand("my sql statement", conn)
myCommand.Connection.Open()
myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
myCommand.Connection.Close()
I say "regular" because most examples I've seen use this syntax, but more recently I've started using:
Using conn As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("myconnStr").ConnectionString)
dim myCommand as SqlCommand
myCommand = new SqlCommand("my sql statement", conn)
myCommand.Connection.Open()
myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
myCommand.Connection.Close()
End Using
...because recently I've seen some examples using this syntax.Even more recently, I've discovered that I'm getting some connection timeouts on a busy website I created a couple years ago. After googling the error, I found a few threads stating that the second example above will provide immediate automatic cleanup of connections, and in looking over the website, I'm using the first syntax exclusively.
My question is, am I creating the problem by not fully tearing down the connections in my code above (merely closing them, but not actually destroying them)? Do I need to do something like "set conn = nothing" like I used to do in VBScript?
And if so, will using the second syntax take care of this problem?

I have SqlDataSource in 2 pages: Page1.aspx and Page2.aspx. I setup all SqlDataSource with EnableCaching is "True" and CacheDuration is "Infinite", same setup for all 2 SqlDataSource as below:
<asp:SqlDataSource
ID="SqlDataSource1"
runat="server"[code]....
When visitor access Page1.aspx, the SqlDataSource in Page1.aspx will access SQL server to retrieve database and cache the database.
Question-1: After accessing Page1.aspx, then the visitor access Page2.aspx. Will visitor access again SQL Server database in Page2.aspx?
Question-2: One cache at one SqlDataSource is for one page and for one user? Or, one cache at one SqlDataSource is for multiple pages and for one user? Or, one cache at one SqlDataSource is for multiple pages and for multiple users?

I have the following .NET VB code to set and read objects in cache on a per user basis (i.e. a bit like session)
'' Public Shared Sub CacheSet(ByVal Key As String, ByVal Value As Object)
Dim userID As String = HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name
HttpContext.Current.Cache(Key & "_" & userID) = Value
End Sub
Public Shared Function CacheGet(ByVal Key As Object)
Dim returnData As Object = Nothing
Dim userID As String = HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name
returnData = HttpContext.Current.Cache(Key & "_" & userID)
Return returnData
End Function
I use these functions to hold user data that I don't want to access the DB for all the time. However, when the data is updated, I want the cached item to be removed so it get created again.
How do I make an Item I set disappear or set it to NOTHING or NULL?

I'm having a real problem trying to get the SQLCacheDependancy working, whenever I add data to the Cache with a SQLCahceDependancy it is invalidated almost immediately. So when I try to access that cache key again it is always null.
My setup is as follows: SQL server 2005 (on remote machine)
Visual Studio 2005 ASP.NET 3.5 on Windows XP Machine.i have run the following script on the DB to set up permissions etc (these script are from various post):
-----------------------------------------------SQL Scripts start -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
use db_Company;
ALTER DATABASE db_Company SET ENABLE_BROKER;

Is it possible to validate a user's Username + Password without logging them in? I understand a usual login block will look like this:
[code]....
With the Membership.ValidateUser() call setting the cookie for the response.
However, there are some additional checks I'd like to perform after the password is confirmed. (Pulling out an expiry date for that user, for example).
Is there a way to do it without just calling FormsAuthentication.SignOut(); after invalidating the page?

I'm having a problem trying to delete the form authentication ticket (.ASPXAUTH) from the server side. It would be the same to delete or invalidate the ticket so the client could not reuse it.
So far, the only solution I've found is to delete the ticket from the client side (through a "Set-Cookie: .ASPXAUTH=;") but nothing seems to be implemented and/or working for doing so in the server side. The final idea is that if someone steels that ticket
In particular, I'm working in C# but as it's rellated to the Dotnet Framework any implementation of the solution would be OK; I tried all the possible things and nothing worked out, even invalidating the session but nothing.

So I'm trying to add a single item to a query I wrote. The query is then pass to the e.Result of a LinqDataSource_Selecting event. This datasource is being used by a dropdown list and label in a listview.
I am trying to add a "New" field to the end of the list.
Currently I have this working, but it seems like a really messy solution. First I make a class with the fields I need:
[Code]....
Then I build the query:
[Code]....
Then a second list and query with the new value:
[Code]....
Finally, I union the two and set the e.Result:

I'm building a Content Management website which will also include other features. When an admin member deletes an item through the admin panel, I would like this item to be moved to a 'recycle bin' for 30 days (then automatically deleted).What is the best way of implementing this feature? One idea I had was to have a 'Deleted' bit column in my table, then only show records [Code].... However this would mean having to remember to put this condition in place everytime I [Code].... from the table.
Another Idea I had was to have a second table where the records would be moved to when deleted. However I have many tables being used in my website, so this would mean doubling the amount of tables, and having duplicate table structures (which could cause consistency issues in the future).Ideally I would like to have a 'RecycleBin' table which all the records are moved to, but this could contain 100s of columns to be able to store data from all the different tables.

You know I have the way to Cache the data I've got from the SQL Server over data caching. In addition I can output cache web user controls.Whats about a web user control contains data from a SQL database? Does it make sense to cache the data and also cache the control?What is the best solution for the combination of these two components?

I have dropdownlist which items are generated using SQLDataSource. And there is a "Delete Button" next to it. When user selects item from dropdownlist and presses that button I want the item to be removed from DB. Here is the question "How can I achieve this using sqldatasource Delete Command?" I do can remove Item From Code Behind. But i believe it's more efficient to use sqldatasource delete command.

I'm trying (poorly I might add) to set up a select statement and due to my noobishness I simply have not found a way to do it RIGHT. Then again - I'm probably starting entirely wrong - but I've gotta' learn somewhere.I'm attempting to track product usage (think mild inventory tracking). In the system, I have independent parts and builds (combination of independent parts) - each has its own SQL table. Each time a "build" is completed, I want to update my part inventory with an updated count of that item.
Build_tbl
Build_ID (int/spec)B_nameB_desc
Part_tbl
Part_id (int/spec)P_nameP_cost

I have a server control that I developed which generates navigation based on a third party CMS API. Currently I am caching this control using the PartialCaching attribute. The CMS uses cache key dependencies to invalidate the cache when a user makes an edit, however in the case of my server control it does not get invalidated and the updated navigation will not show up until the cache expiration set by the PartialCaching attribute.Here is my two part question:
What is the proper way to programmatically cache a server control, without using the PartialCaching attribute, and adding a cache key dependency?
Is it possible to continue to use the PartialCaching attribute and add a cache key dependency?
