How To Invalidate A Single Data Item In The .net Cache In VB
Jun 3, 2010
I have the following .NET VB code to set and read objects in cache on a per user basis (i.e. a bit like session)
'' Public Shared Sub CacheSet(ByVal Key As String, ByVal Value As Object)
Dim userID As String = HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name
HttpContext.Current.Cache(Key & "_" & userID) = Value
End Sub
Public Shared Function CacheGet(ByVal Key As Object)
Dim returnData As Object = Nothing
Dim userID As String = HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name
returnData = HttpContext.Current.Cache(Key & "_" & userID)
Return returnData
End Function
I use these functions to hold user data that I don't want to access the DB for all the time. However, when the data is updated, I want the cached item to be removed so it get created again.
How do I make an Item I set disappear or set it to NOTHING or NULL?

I read few xml files from a location and cache them using Http context cache. Anytime the xml files changes i have to do a IISReset to view the latest changes.
I use this
System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Cache
I have to use the caching as i don't want to read all the xml files all the time. i read it once and caches them for a day. They get reset whenever apppool recyles or anyone manualy do a IISReset.
Is there anyway in asp.net to invalidate the cache if someones changes the xml file.

My web application is using the asp.net cache object to store data from the database. I am looking for an elegant to invalidate cache objects but haven't come up with anything elegant yet. It is easy to invalidate a single record or a list of all records in a single table, by keeping track of their cache keys. However I may have any number of lists of subsets of a table's data. I would like to invalidate only the cache records of the lists that contain a particular record, when that record changes. I don't want to have to invalidate all the lists of data for that table if only one of the lists contain that record.

I am trying to use a repeater control that will display a hyperlink control. For the text of that Hyperlink control I would like to concatenate to fields from my data source (lets say First Name and Last Name). How would I do this appropriately for the Hyperlink control within an ItemTemplate?

I think it is a problem that SqlCacheDependency may invalidate a cache item while it is being set:
function getCacheItem()
if cacheitem is empty
cacheitem = something
AND AT THIS POINT SqlCacheDependency INVALIDATES THE cacheitem
end if
return cacheitem
end function
how can we prevent this? Is it somehow possible to specify a ReaderWriterLockSlim for the SqlCacheDependecy to use?

Currently I update a single item in a database as follows:
var master = (from tmi in db._Masters where tmi.Id == Id select tmi).FirstOrDefault();
master.logPosition++;
db.SubmitChanges();
This strikes me as inefficient, as (I think) I am pulling out a full DB row to just update a single value. Is there a more efficient query I can use?

We have a data driven ASP.NET website which has been written using the standard pattern for data caching (adapted here from MSDN):
public DataTable GetData()
{
string key = "DataTable";
object item = Cache[key] as DataTable;
[code]...
The trouble with this is that the call to GetDataFromSQL() is expensive and the use of the site is fairly high. So every five minutes, when the cache drops, the site becomes very 'sticky' while a lot of requests are waiting for the new data to be retrieved.
What we really want to happen is for the old data to remain current while new data is periodically reloaded in the background. (The fact that someone might therefore see data that is six minutes old isn't a big issue - the data isn't that time sensitive). This is something that I can write myself, but it would be useful to know if any alternative caching engines (I know names like Velocity, memcache) support this kind of scenario. Or am I missing some obvious trick with the standard ASP.NET data cache?

i've got a website that uses OutputCache attribute to cache pages. Works great.
Now, I'm in the middle of R&D'ing scaling up this site to be in a web farm. Along with the usual suspects for webfarm pain ... I've noticed (pretty quickly/obviously) that the OutputCache from Server_A doesn't invalidate the OutputCache from Server_B .. if a try and invalidate a single server's OutputCache. This makes total sense -> how can S_A 'tell' S_B to invalidate when they are physically 2 seperate machines, etc?
So - what are our options?
Velocity? I understand this will move the caching to a different layer .. which means that the final result (output) will always be required to be determined .. as opposed to the OutputCache whic remembers the final output content (yes, varby gives different versions, etc.. which is totally fine). So even though the poco or business objects are all sync'd, there's still that last rendering effort required (even if it's tiny .. compared to the effort to generate/sync business objects).

I am using an asp.net details view. I added an entry into the details view like so...
<asp:BoundField DataField="DTMON_F" HeaderText="Monday Start:" InsertVisible="False"
ReadOnly="True" SortExpression="DTMON_F" Visible="false" />
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="*Monday Start: " SortExpression="DTMON_F">
<EditItemTemplate>
[Code]....
Now I need to FIRST concatinate the values from the dropdown then bind the data gathered in the edit template form the 3 dropdowns. How might I do that?

The title pretty much explains it. I want to bind a single item to a detail type control. I can bind to a repeater perfectly fine and obviously only one item will be displayed. It seems like there would be a better suited control for this. I know about FormView and DetailsView but they both generate a table which I don't really want. Something similar to the Repeater since it doesn't generate any content other than what you put in the template.

I've got this gridview. The gridview uses TemplateFields as the number of fields in the database's table. What I do next is use an ItemTemplate to present the correct column info.
Now, problems rise when the user click's Edit. Since I can only use EditItemTemplate to edit I am resulted with a control in each column. What I really want is to have a single row with no columns so I can easily style the edit mode (having a table with a different layout for example).
Is this possible?

I have this code which takes a value from a dropdown control as a parameter.
[Code]....
I'm now changing to a list control so that multiple items can be selected. So far I have some code that places the items selected into a string that looks like this:
'item1','item2','item4'
For the above example I would need all the the records returned when the field action_ref contains either item1 or item2 or item3.

Context: In an ASP.NET application, I need the behavior of the ItemTemplate / EditItemTemplate that the DataList control provides. However, I only need one item in my control, which makes the DataList seems like overkill.
Question: Is there a control in ASP.NET made to store a single item that has the template content behavior of the DataList and DataGrid? Should I use a DataList for only one item?

I have a stored procedure that returns 3 tables within the single recordset it returns. If I set a SqlDataSource to get data from this procedure, it works, but it only returns the first table. I want to have a GridView display the data from the 2nd or 3rd table using a SqlDataSource, but I can't figure out how to specify a particular table.
While there are some posts discussing this out there, I can't get a definitive answer about whether or not this is even possible (?). In a worst-case scenario, I can create another SP that only returns the 3rd table - but that creates a little maintenance headache that I would prefer to avoid.

We have a wfc layer that wraps the business classes and database access and use a client that lives on the database layer. Amongst our group we are attempting to form standards. Some want to have the client call the web method and pass the page they are requesting and the page size. Pass that to the database and then page in SQL Server use RowNum.Some want to cache the full list of objects in http cache on the service tier and page in memory. They concern here is memory use on the server.
Which would be best for a medium number of users with potentially large number of records to manage (say 30K) Is it better to cache them all in memory and work from there or page at the database as the application scales?

What are the "optimal" parameters for creating an AppFabric cache when you will be storing session state in the cache? MSDN Cache-Related Commands
Powershell command line:
New-Cache [-CacheName] <String> [-Eviction <String>] [-Expirable <String>] [-Force [<SwitchParameter>]] [-NotificationsEnabled <String>] [-Secondaries <Int32>] [-TimeToLive <Int64>]
[code]...
Since I don't want my sessions to be removed unless the session has been abandoned either via code or Session Timeout...For eviction, I would think "None" and for expireable, I would think False.I have tested and calling Session.Abandon does remove the object from the cache. I have also tested to see if by extending my session, the session object in cache is also extended. This does seem to work the "correct" way.
