DataSource Controls :: Storing Required Field Names In Web.config?

I am writing an app that has a bit of process flow to it. On the save of a record, I need to check some fields to make sure they are not null. If they are not null, I will update a 'SectionComplete' field to true.
The thing is, I would like to store my fields in the web.config. So, I would like to have a string in the appsettings section that has a list of field names that are required. Then in my method, I would call these fields out and check each one for the specific record id, and then update the database.
I would like to do this in the web.config so we could add/remove columns without having to redeploy.
For example: my required fields are name, id, and phone. For section one to be labeled complete, all of these fields would need to be not null.
web.config would have this entry:

I have been working with this database for some time. Here is the situation...
I inherited a MS SQL database that has hundreds of tables with similar data. For instance:
FordTampa_customer is a table,
ChevyAtlanta_customer is a table, etc....
All of the columns are the same...just different tables with their own ID field. All I have done...Inside of another database id is created a table called 'Customer' and added an 'Dealer ID' column along with the rest of the other columns in the other tables...
So the combination of the 'Dealer ID' and the 'ID' field are unique.....I know...its not the best way to do things...but I cannot change the old data structure because I cannot have access to it. I am give back-ups on a weekly basis, so this is all I have to work with.
All right, on to the real point of my post...
Currently, I have an application that I use to select all of the data from the 'Ford_customers','Chevy_customers',etc... and inserts them into my new main 'Customer' table. I do this by selecting the table names, bind it to an arraylist, loop through the list and execute an insert statement.
I do this in VB.NET, but I would prefer to do it in a Stored procedure of some kind....I just am not sure how to accomplish it. I use this syntax to get my list of tables:

I have a DetailsView on the page and I have made one of the fields a TemplateField. In the EditItemTemplate and InsertItemTemplate I have a DropdownList that is databound to a table in my Sql Server database. I wanted to add an initial value to the DropdownList
namely "- select -" .
I set the AppendDataBoundItems property to true and added the initial value as a ListItem.Markup of the DropdownList

AppendDataBoundItems="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource_HP" [code]...
This works fine for new input. The problem is however that the database already has records that were entered through a Windows Application and many of these records has a null value in this field and exceptions are thrown when I tried to open these records
and the system tried to set the SelectedValue of the DropdownList.After some more searching I found this help

So I changed the ListItem in the DropDownList markup to the following:
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownList_RefHospDV4" runat="server"

This now solved the problem of opening a record where the value is null in the database, BUT now the RequiredFieldValidator is not validating anymore to make sure that a databound item is selected for this field and not the initial value "- select -". So basically now it is not checking anymore to see if valid input has been entered for the DropDownList and it accepts "- select -" thus it acts as if the field is not a required field anymore.
In short what is required is that I want to make sure that the user enters a valid selection in the DropDownList, but it must also cater for old records that do not have this field entered yet so that those old records can be opened in the DetailsView .Opening Old records (with null in that field):When these old records are opened in the DetailsView the DropDownlist should show "- select -" when the value in the database is null.
Saving records (old or new records):When saving the record in Insert mode or Update mode the RequiredFieldValidator should show that a valid input is not selected if the DropDownList is still on "- select -".

I have a gridview that is dynamically created based off a csv file I'm importing.
Since I don't know what the column names are ahead of time, I can't pre format the gridview and use the "findcontrol" method to get the text value of the labels that are populated b/c I don't know the column names.
I know I can get the row index like this by iterating through the gridview...

but I'm not sure how to get the text value of the first column label? Not sure of the syntax?

Is it possible to have "Required Field Validator" controls to validate more than one field (example I have 12 textboxes that are required. I want to try an avoid having 12 RFV controls. If a validation does get triggered, is there a way to display a customized message ("textA is empty" or "textB is empty") etc.?

I have a aspx page with a ascx control inside an ascx control and the required field validator is not hit on the action of the page.
The issue is with the 2nd nested ascx control. The field validators in the first ascx control validate correctly, but with the ascx control inside the ascx control there are issues.
The nested ascx control is a repeater control and this may be the reason, but I am unsure.
I'm not exactly sure what question to ask, but I'll list a few below.
How do I attach the field validators up a level to the 1st ascx control?
Is it possible to put required fields into a nested ascx control?

I'm trying to use a field validator to make sure one of my list boxes has a selection before the user is able to proceed to the next page. i'm having is that if the validation message is triggered, all of the buttons on my page loose functionality.Meaning, if I purposely trigger the validation control, I can't get rid of the error message and none of my buttons do anything when clicke after this.

Is it possible to make it so that a particular field in my gridview is made mandatory based on a session variable and the value of a dropdwnlist located outside of the grid itself...so
If Session("location") = "HOME" and DropDownList3.SelectedValue = ("5") then
"fieldinmygridview" cannot be null (i.e is required)

I am using TinyMCE Editor for textarea in my webpage.
I also use RequiredFieldValidator for the same textarea, and when I click submit button the RequiredFieldValidator fires even the textarea has some text entered in it.

i am using the required field validation and Reqularexpressioncontrol in gridview. Fields are in the gridview are in template, but only the edit button it is not templeted, this edit buton is of type Imagebutton and same goes with canel and update.
1_ Do i have to use the Templeted fields for edit/cancel/ and update as well in order to use the validation?
2_Validaiotn should only work when user clicks on the Update button, it should not trigger when cancel button fired.

I have a gridview on my aspx page having templatefields. In one of my templatefield i have a textbox with requiredfieldvalidator for validating input in textbox. I have another templatefield having checkbox in it. Now i want whenever user check the checkbox and then click on insert button, then first of all requiredfieldvalidor validates the textbox input for that particular row and then perform the insert operation. I m trying like this-My aspx code-

I have some controls on the asp.net page that can be required on certain senario and can be not required on others.
So we enable/disable them dinamaically depending on the current transactions.
Now I am thinking of a way where I can check the required field by Javascript on the click event of save button. Remember control not be required at all time.

I have a repeater control and inseid it's ItemTemplate and AlternateItemTemplate, I have the following code (toy code):

The problem is, when I click the button it shows a '*' in front of every textbox in odd or even items, instead of validating only the textbox in that item.
How can I validate only the text box inside the item in which the button being clicked resides?

in my module there are data of students for H.S.C., C.E.T, AND H.S.C+C.E.T. so when i run the gridview page all the data of all streams together is displayed so i sort the data using a dropdownlist...means if 1 select the H.S.C in dropdownlist only the H.S.C students are being displayed.so the problem is when i sort the data by selecting a stream in dropdownlist at that time the error message of required field validator is displayed...
1) I wil select the stream from Dropdownlist and click the "sort button"
2) After the data is been sorted and i will enter the values in the TextBox and if i'll miss any of the textbox blank and i click on the "submit button" after dat the error should be displayed
as "Required".

When your web.config or app.config file has an appsettings entry, what is the best way to refer to its key in your code file? Developers I have worked with have differing opinions on this. Some say to hard code the string and others suggest that there should be a file containing string constants and in your code, you use the constant as the appsettings key. I would be interested in hearing other opinions on this. What do you do? Why is it the best?

I'm trying to find out how i store user names and passwords in the web.config file. I have tried looking for documentation on this but haven't found any so far.
I see in the class library it says that the Authenticate method of the FormsAuthentication class is for use in authenticating credentials against those stored in the config file, but i don't know how to store them there to begin with. I want to store two username:password pairs in the web.config file preferably encrypted.
one of these username:password pairs i want to be hard coded. The other i want to be able to be reset with a password reset form which I will code later. I guess there maybe a method for creating a sername:password entry in the web.config which could be used with my password reset form if such a method exists. But I need to know how to hand code the username:password entries into the web.config file to begin with and to beable to create the hard coded pair.

I wanna join all the field as a new col.
but how can i ignore the empty field because i always join the field and separate by space like the following.
select (field_1+' '+field_2+' '+field_3) as new_col from TABLEA
but if the field is empty, then there is the double space
how can i ensure all the space is one space only.

had a look around and a couple come close to the problem I have, but there more evolved than me, so it seems quite basic.I basically, want to store the current DateTime of when a button is hit. In order to achieve this I have a field in the table of SQL DB called 'TimeStamp' (Although strictly speaking its not, thats just what I've called it) using Datetime Datatype. I think I'm skipping some stages in order to accomplish it, although I'm not sure what it is I'm missing/doing wrong :SHere is my code:

I just have DID have "obj.TimeStamp = DateTime.Now;" but states I need to convert it (unsure how to do) Adding "ToLongTimeString" after .Now asks if I invoked the method. I've also tried a few other ways (saveNow.Now etc... ) but to no avail.
