I have a mssql table of names. This table contains names from A thru Z. However, I want to be able to display names by their beginning alphabet...Like first Display names A thru CThen Display Names D thru F
and ..so on....and so forth....thru ZI using asp.net and have a grid view with paging enabled.....
I have been working with this database for some time. Here is the situation...
I inherited a MS SQL database that has hundreds of tables with similar data. For instance:
FordTampa_customer is a table,
ChevyAtlanta_customer is a table, etc....
All of the columns are the same...just different tables with their own ID field. All I have done...Inside of another database id is created a table called 'Customer' and added an 'Dealer ID' column along with the rest of the other columns in the other tables...
So the combination of the 'Dealer ID' and the 'ID' field are unique.....I know...its not the best way to do things...but I cannot change the old data structure because I cannot have access to it. I am give back-ups on a weekly basis, so this is all I have to work with.
All right, on to the real point of my post...
Currently, I have an application that I use to select all of the data from the 'Ford_customers','Chevy_customers',etc... and inserts them into my new main 'Customer' table. I do this by selecting the table names, bind it to an arraylist, loop through the list and execute an insert statement.
I do this in VB.NET, but I would prefer to do it in a Stored procedure of some kind....I just am not sure how to accomplish it. I use this syntax to get my list of tables:

i am using a gridview which shows the data and a select column. when the user selects a record a detailsview is shown with the respective details and an edit button inside it. when the user clicks on the edit button the entire detailsview becomes editable and the user can now edit the selected record .here the problem starts cause when the user clicks on the update button there is an error stating that illegal variable/number or parameter not found.i am using sqldatasource to bind the gridview and detailsview with an unique RequestId fieldwhich detailsview sql datasource uses to bind the record uniquely.

I have found plenty of documentation on saving to a file and the file path to a database. But, I haven't found anything that will allow me to seperate the images into categoies.

When I call select in codebehind, after 30sec it throws timeout expired SqlException:

again , this select took up to 3 sec to be executed. In application I tried to use SqlConnection and SqlTableAdapter instead of SqlDataSource, with the same query, and again it took up to 3 sec.
If I choose tighter interval (e.g '2011-01-20 00:00:00' - '2011-01-21 00:00:00') , there is no timeout exception, so I know that sqldatasource select is executed correctly. So the conclusion is that sql server is not using index while executing query sent from sqldatasource, but is using index whenever else. I have also checked the index statistics on sql server and it is like that. In profiler i can see slight difference between this two cases. As for SqlDataSource, in events table, in first column "EventClass" after 30 sec, there is this: "RPC:Completed" and application throws timeout. If i use SqlConnection and SqlTableAdapter then at the same place there is this: "SQL:BatchStarting" and "SQL:BatchCompleted" and application does not throws timeout(the index has been used).
what is so special on SqlDataSource connection, that Sql Server performs differently compared to other types of connections?
everytime I modify an SQLdatasource using VS wizards, I have to dettach the mdf in VS's server exporer, then hit refresh in the browser, then get the applicaiton is offline error message please remove some pia file, but i usually just count to 12 and then hit refresh again and the page renders properlyhad scoured the forum on more than one ocasstiion, think it has something to do with the Admin rights within SQL, Ive tried the SQL server surface configuration tool, and add administrator stuff, but not sure if i should add (user to provision) something like the asp.net thing, or network services or ??also cant figure out where to view which administrators are actually on SQL server,
View 4 RepliesI have this working on another project I have but cannot figure out why I can't get it to work on another. I have a dropdownlist box with employee names. When an employee is selected, I display the data (address, phone, email, etc.) in a series of textboxes. User can make changes and then click on an "Update" button where I attempt to update the database with the changes using the sqldatasource. The code works without any errors, but the database does not update.

I am trying to create a smart search for a specific column in a database. the column is a short text (title of an article), so I am looking for a search that will ignores the order of the words, and mispelling mistakes. the search must returns the search results order by rellevance, and the seach is not in english, so the FREETEXT that search by meanning won't work here.
I created already a search SQL, but it is not wide range enough and won't except mispelling.

Its working fine for PDF / doc files but not working for .JPG files.
Basically i have some document scanned and stored it in varbinnary datatype in DB.
I am able to search for .doc /.xml /.pdf files .. but not able to search .jpg.
also i am not getting ".jgp" extension in result of following query

on my page I have two textboxes as starting and ending date and having Ajax Calendar Control on them
If I set date format in Ajax control as dd/MM/yyyy it raises error while searching on date period range

I have a multiList box, I'd like to add search functionality. Like if the user enters a name in the textbox, click a button and all of names like say Smith will be returned. I'm looking for articles that with help me with the client side code. Someone else will write the server side.
View 1 Repliesi have two sqldatasource controls. one i use to display data in textbox's ,filter'd by a select parameter in page behind code. Once checked, i want to copy this data to the other datasource ,by selecting checkbox.Then display this data in detailsview control.
At present the two datasource controls declared , render data to the page simultaneously during pageload. I want to first check data in textbox's from first source, before second datasource is rendered to screen. note, both are filtered by a page variable. i wish to leave the textbox datasource control in situ, as other controls and code depend on it.The other detailsview datasource is my problem?

View 1 RepliesI am writing an app that has a bit of process flow to it. On the save of a record, I need to check some fields to make sure they are not null. If they are not null, I will update a 'SectionComplete' field to true.
The thing is, I would like to store my fields in the web.config. So, I would like to have a string in the appsettings section that has a list of field names that are required. Then in my method, I would call these fields out and check each one for the specific record id, and then update the database.
I would like to do this in the web.config so we could add/remove columns without having to redeploy.
For example: my required fields are name, id, and phone. For section one to be labeled complete, all of these fields would need to be not null.
web.config would have this entry:

I am writting a custom class with which I manipulate the data for my website. I was wondering if there is a way to connect to a database and retreive the column names for a given table with out sellecting any data in the table.
Currently I am using an sql select and connection string to create an SqlComman object. Then I use the command object to create a SqlDataAdapter object which I use to fill a DataSet. At the end of all that I am able to retrieve the column names but I have select data and retreived data.
