Feb 9, 2010I have an asp.net web app that uses forms-based authentication, a SqlMembershipProvider (using an encrypted password format), and a SqlRoleProvider. I need to know if it's possible to administer the users (create new users, assign them to roles, etc.) from a windows application - the powers that be don't want any administrative functionality in the web app itself.

So, obviously, I have a Sql Server database that contains the users and roles for the web app. I'd like to create a separate windows app that references the web app assembly, and use the configured MembershipProvider, RoleProvider, and machineKey to create users, assign users to roles, etc. If that's not possible, I can duplicate the configuration settings from web.config within the windows app. But I don't know how to do this either.

Mar 25, 2011I need to stop users users using the browser back button and potentially submitting an old version of a form.
I'm storing a guid in a session variable and also writing the value to a hidden form field and then checking the session value against the hidden field value if a user does try to navigate back and submit an old form.
If the form is submitted and the user wants to complete a new copy of the form then a new guid is generated both to the session and to the hidden form field. Now, if the user decides to hit the back button a few times to get the old form and tries to submit it again, the page checks the current guid in session against the guid stored in the form field and it finds a mismatch and prevents the form being submitted.
This works as expected in Chrome and Firefox, but in IE6, when the user hits the back button to view the old form, the new guid value appears in the hidden field of the old form! This means the user can submit the old form again, which we definitely do not want.

Feb 28, 2010I'm developing an ASP.NET application which has allows users to search for other users based on their name. This search is done using Linq to SQL. At the moment, I've only got 10 or so users in my database, so I can't really test the efficiency of my search query. I'm new to testing and such, but what is the best way to simulate 100/1000/10000 users on a query? Is there a tool (preferably free) that would allow me to perform tests to see how quickly the database can be searched if it had x number of users?

My Idea is to read each row from database from existing users table in a datatable and then iterate through each row and add it to new database. I cannot directly copy the rows from existing users table because the password stored in .Net Membership provider is in ir-reversible hash code and hashing is done through encryption algorithm present in front end code. Jul 12, 2010I restored a database from another server, and everything looks good except the users.
I'm managing all this from SQL Server 2008 Management Studio as SA.
The users are present in the [u]databaseName > security > users[/u] section, and they exist in [u]databaseServer > Security > Logins[/u]. However I can't change anything in the [u]databaseName > security > users[/u] section, because when I try and make a change, and then I hit OK to apply, it says "[i]login name must be specified[b][/b][/i]". But the login name field is grayed out and I can't modify it(even though I'm logged into the machine as Administrator and SQL as SA).
Also, in the user mapping section, when I try to map one of the users to a database, it says '[i]create failed user already exists[b][/b][/i]'...but I don't want to create the user, I just want to map that user to the appropriate databases...

Jun 20, 2010I downloaded the complete web dev 2010, asp.net and sql from your site, installed everything went ok, created site, published again everything ok. Asked in forum about images got answer and everything workedok.When I first set the site up, I could login and register new users, great I thought, however I then tried to create a page with a data set on it to view those users, I created a connection string with the wizard, tested connection which worked.When I published the page it came up with a ton of errors and after that I couldn't login or register any users, anyone got any ideas.

Does Static Reference To HttpContext.Current.Session Return Same Session For All Users
Feb 4, 2011Is there room for issue in the following code in terms of multiple users of the same web application? I mean, I know that a purely static string will be shared across all sessions for a single ASP.NET application, but since this explicitly refers to the Current.Session, even though it is static it seems like it would always refer to the session instance of the "current user." But an error is happening that could be explained by everyone sharing the current value of Mode and thus the most recent change overwriting everyone else's mode value. (As a background: This string is in a Helpers class that is used throughout the application. I do not want to make references to Session["Mode"] throughout the application and do not want to have to pass Session["Mode"] in every method call from an aspx.cs page.)

Mar 9, 2010In my organization we use nested groups. For a particular usage, we have a group (let's assume that the group name "kuku"), and the names of all the nested groups under it contains "kuku" as well.
We may assume that no other group in the LDAP has "kuku" in the name.
I need to create a filter which will return all the users which belong to one of the "kuku"s group.
Obviously, using this filter will bring only the head kukus
(&(&(objectclass=user)(objectclass=person))(memberOf=CN=kuku,cn=...rest of the group DN...))
How can I use wild card to fetch all users which belong to any kuku?
For example: (&(&(objectclass=user)(objectclass=person))(memberOf=CN=.*kuku.*))
