DataSource Controls :: Get Around The 'has No Supported Translation To SQL' For A Sortable Field?

There's an issue I'm having in several areas of my ASP.NET site, but am using the following as an example. If I can get it solved, then I'm reasonably sure it has applications elsewhere.Let's say I have a gridview based on the aspnet_membership table. Its LINQ datasource is aspnet_membership, which exists in my datacontext.By itself, it works GREAT in the grid.However, showing UserId in and of itself doesn't have much meaning; I wanted to include UserName.So, in my Public Partial Class, I created a read-only property UserName:

This retrieves and displays the correct data, no problem there.However, I'm not able to sort on that new column. When I attempt to do so, I get the following error: The member 'aspnet_Membership.UserName' has no supported translation to SQL.A workaround is, of course, to use a Sql datasource. But as I'm learning more about LINQ and the partial classes, I want to learn how to do it the correct way.

What i want is to get lists of the posts, and do a small quick calculations of the rating and then sort those from highest to low and take 5 posts only.

ASP.NET 4.0 comes up with a bulk of noticable improvements , including freshment of LINQ to Entities model. Other than this , I still remember another .net built-in ORM framework "LinqToSQL" which provides a lighter and more direct way to interact with SQL-server based db system. However, it seems no term concerns "Linq to sql" in .net 4.0 pulication announcement. So I think it might be deprecated in the furture due to .Net team's plan. I wonder if .NET team decide to just choose entity framework to fully serve as the .NET official ORM implement and no longer develop 'LinqToSQL' . Is LinqToSQL really an attemptive speck and not worth holding in the furture?

i am trying to do: Parameters.Add("@ProfileHtml", SqlDbType.Text, MAX_TEXT).Direction = ParameterDirection.Output but i keep getting this error. MAX_TEXT is integer = 2147483647 Data type 0x23 is a deprecated large object, or LOB, but is marked as output parameter. Deprecated types are not supported as output parameters. Use current large object types instead.

I have never created my own solution before now. I have always modified existing solutions and know how to do it. For some reason, this new solution isn't connecting to my SQL server correctly.
I am using VWD 2008 Express Edition.
I have MSSQL 2008 Developer Edition.
I have used aspnet_regsql.exe to create the tables in my SQL DB.
I have added the following to my webconfig:

But for some reason, when I try to use the Web Site Administration Tool it thinks it is not setup.
What am I missing?

I wanna join all the field as a new col.
but how can i ignore the empty field because i always join the field and separate by space like the following.
select (field_1+' '+field_2+' '+field_3) as new_col from TABLEA
but if the field is empty, then there is the double space
how can i ensure all the space is one space only.

I have a 20 to 30 fields on a form. Most of them are optional. However, the users can fill out what they want. If a user dosen't fill in a field when data is sent to the database it's sent as blank, instead of NULL. Is there a way I can generically say "for all textboxes if Equals("") then DBNull.Value". Without going through each and every textbox?

how to make a gridview's header fixed and sortable. All the solutions I've seen do one or the other, but not both. If I put the header in a separate table, I don't know how to make it sort. None of the CSS options I've seen work either.
My gridview isn't anything special, but it is databound via a data accessor in c#.

I need to make a large Ebay-style list of listings (think of the page that comes up when you search for something in Ebay, with a photo, title, one-line description, price, that's paged, and sortable). My limited experience with DataGrids in the past always resulted in what felt like a sluggish page to me, but I'm not sure if it would have been faster if I had pieced it together with a data reader instead.So I'm wondering before I even get started, what is the fastest / most efficient way to retrieve and manage this data.Is it more efficient at runtime to use a DataGrid, or to write the paging and sorting in more manually and use a DataReader, or another way?Ebay manages to get thousands of listings to display very quickly, but they've obviously got a lot of manpower to squeeze every last bit of performance they can out of the site, and good high-powered servers.

I have stumbled into a problem in which Im having a hard time solving. I have a linq data setup(based on a mssql) where a Purchase Order contains a number Equipments - each equipment has a price. I have a gridview that shows the summed price of the equipments that are included in a Purchase Order. This sum is currently being calculated on RowDataBound through a "listOfEq.Sum(Eq => Eq.PurchaseOrderPrice);" expression which works without any problems. My problem is that I want to be able to sort the gridview based on this summed value, which I cannot do with a normal sortexpression. My next thought was to create a function in my database to calculate the sum instead and then use this is my data basis for the summed column. I have created a function like this:

Displaying the correct information is not a problem, however creating the sorting is. Im not sure what to put in the SortExpression. Anybody got an idea of what to do? Perhaps I am forced to use a computed column for this however I dont know to create this column when its based on another table. If this is the case, any idea about how to do create a computed column thats based on data from another table?

I can't use the like'%Mary%' because it can extract 'Ma' too.

I used sqldatasouce and storeprocedure to populate DetailView. I need update few tables by pass parameters to my storeprocedure. but some value always lost (most of them is keyfield). when I checked those value through sqldatasource_updating event they are null . How can I get the correct value?

Once again, I find myself stuck!
I am attempting to compare one of ASP.NET's membership userID's with the current userID in an SQL query, however because of the "hyphens -" in the uniqueidentifier field type of userID, i am unable to compare the ids. is there a way around this? (in my example, family_id from tblFamily is the userID that has type uniqueidentifier). my code as it stands is:

I have a form that submits one entry to a 'Listings' table and multiple entries to a 'ListingLocation' table depending on how many cities the user selected. When the listing is created, I need the auto generated 'id' field to input into each of the the listing rows of the 'ListingLocation' table. This seems like it should be simple but I cannot figure it out. I currently have it hardcoded to enter '22' where I need it to enter the listing id.
