I am having problems returning a string value through a stored procedure/linq to a label. Everything works fine if I return an integer value but I cant get a string value to bind to a label. I get the error message

I have a table added to a dbml file in my website. The website is already deployed to Live server. Now I have been instructed to a add a new field to the table. The field will be defaulted as getdate().
I don't plan to modify my dbml file for this change since the filed holds a default value. Will it cause any issue(performance related or any other). I am sure that I will not have to use the newly added field in the website. I am new to LINQ.
I have a Listview with a LinqDataSource. I am allocating a resoure called Bladder Scanners to clinicians on the day selected. The field in the database, 'Allocated_Bladder_Scanner_Id', allows nulls. The 'nullable' property of the field in the dbml is set to allow nulls.In the edit template, I have an unbound dropdownlist (drpBladderScannerDropdown) with an 'empty string' item added to cater for nulls, and
AppendDataBoundItems="true".In order to show only bladder scanners which have not yet been allocated on the selected day, I am databinding the dropdownlist to a dictionary of unallocated bladder scanners in the ItemDataBound event. I then add the currently selected bladder scanner as a listitem and set it as the selected item. So far, so good, all works well. However, if the clinician has a bladder scanner currently allocated, and then the user elects to not allocate the clinician a bladder scanner on that day by selecting 'Nothing' from the dropdownlist, the LinqDataSource fails to update the field. I am trying to allow users to grab their stored procs and call certain ones from within code. I can get the stored procedures and then fill a dropdown with them, but what I cannot find at this point is how to get the parameters that each stored procedure needs. I would like, once an SP is chosen from the dropdown to make a call to the db with that sp name and grab its paramter list so I can report what needs to be sent in to the user.

My question is that, for each control the Stored Procedure called or not? If it is yes then it is time consuming and I need to use LINQ to DataSet or LINQ to Object rather than to call SP for each control. What is difference between LINQ to DataSet and LINQ to Object?
I have a 20 to 30 fields on a form. Most of them are optional. However, the users can fill out what they want. If a user dosen't fill in a field when data is sent to the database it's sent as blank, instead of NULL. Is there a way I can generically say "for all textboxes if Equals("") then DBNull.Value". Without going through each and every textbox?

It seems to insert and not insert correctly, I just cannot get it to return the correct value.
I am developing a page in ASP.Net where I have the user enter a letter into a textbox. They then click a submit button and I all of the userids that start with that letter are to be displayed. So I need the SP to go through the database and match first letters with what was entered. Here is what I have as my code for the SP:

In my application, users fill out a form to submit a "Job Request" - once they submit the form it is stored as a new row in a table in the Sql database. Each "Job Request" that is submitted is given a "JobID" which is a number and also the primary key of the new row in the database (the number is generated by the database). Once the users hit the "submit" button, I'd like to return the value of the "JobID" (the primary key) so that the user can know what it is. How would I achieve this? In the future, I will have to expand the application so that the users would be able to edit an older "Job Request" and get a similar JobID number (so if before it was 1234, the new one would be 1234-1 or something like that), so this is not simply a matter of searching for the highest number in the primary key field in the table and returning that. I'm using Sql for my database and writing in VB.

I have a query using LINQ-to-SQL. It queries an underlying database table Rooms. It uses Where conditions to narrow down the results, namely:
Gender.
Current Occupancy < Max Occupancy
Available Flag is Checked
I know this should return results but it keeps returning an empty set. Any ideas? Code is below

UPDATE: I've verified that the issue is with the statement where sh.is_available = 1, which doesn't make sense since this is a bit field.

I'm returning one table. My understanding is that a DataSet can be made of more than one DataTable. I also understand that I can use either of these to return my one table.
Is it better to use the DataTable when I have one table to return instead of a DataSet? Is there any advantage of not using the DataSet in a situation like this? Is there a disadvantage to using the DataSet when only one table is being returned? Does this even matter?
