Feb 4, 2011I've inherited an asp.net web solution, which has business logic and data calls as seperate assemblies. In the business layer there are a small number of calls to get/set HttpContext session values. I've looked around for an example that will allow me to abstract this away from the business logic as I'd like to be able to reuse these assemblies in non-web projects, could anyone please give me an example of the best way to do this. I was thinking of some sort of session factory that will obtain values from some sort of persistant store depending on the usage scenario but I'm new to architecture really and would appreciate a pointer or two.

Jan 4, 2011I have an C# ASP application I am writing that needs to have the capability to import a generated excel or a comma delineated sheet each day. A clerk will have this job each morning so it doesn't need to be automated. My problem in trying to understand the solution to this is that the 1 sheet contains loan information, including customer information all in the same sheet. I would like to send certain columns to update information in the loan table and send other information to update the customer table. I need it to create relationships when new loans appear in the spreadsheet.

Requirement is to process inputs files and generate a single excel report.
After report gets exported, data in tables in should be deleted (i am using global temp tables for this).
But the problem is, two users are unable to generate report simultaneously.
Is this problem with global temporary tables?

Jun 18, 2010I was wondering if setting a default value for a SelectList is considered to be presentation logic or business logic? For example, if a requirement is that an Employee cannot be saved without a Location, but 99% of the time the location that would be selected is a particular item -- say Atlanta. Because of this, the location SelectList should be defaulted to Atlanta when ever a entry screen for a new employee is displayed. Should I be defaulting the location in the model or in the view-model? One thing I realized is that the unit tests become awkward because in both cases, I'd be forced to test against a location that will always be present in production but I cannot create a unit test with my own test dataunless "Atlanta" was in the set of locations being used in the test.

Sep 29, 2010I have a C# problem I need to synchronize two MS Access tables from two different databases(two databases over a network) which is quite similar, I thought of using two different OleDbConnections and two DataAdapters to fill a Single DataSet and then manipulate the data in the DataSet, I think the source table (database with the primary data) should be loaded first (into the DataSet) then the secondary table from the remote database should subtract the existing records in the DataSet to get the difference then the difference should be Appended to the remote table, but I don't know how to remove the same records from the DataSet and to send the remaining records to the secondary database.

Jan 14, 2010I have access to two seperate databases (mySQL) located on two servers. I need to get the data, link the tables on a key field and display the results in a datagrid. My challenge is that if the search criteria changes for the display it affects rows returned from on table and should thus automatically affect the linked table and resulting data returned.
what the best approach would be to achieving this? So far I have set up a dataset with a dataadapter and table for each connection and then linked the tables in the dataset. The problem that I'm having is getting the linked resultsets to work.
On my form I have the datagrid with two Objectdatasources one for each dataadapter and i believe that's where I'm going wrong...

I have following sample trigger which uses SQL Server built in tables "deleted" and "inserted" tables. But Oracle we do not have equivalent. Oracle has only :OLD, :NEW, which represents only one row, but not table contains set of deleted/inserted rows. what would be the equivalent trigger in Oracle?

Configuration :: .net App That Calls An Exe Under Alternate User Context?
Mar 28, 2011I'm banging my head against a wall here... can't get to the bottom of this issue. I have code that works fine when debugging in visual studio but breaks when deployed to both IIS 6 and IIS 7.5. Basically, it uses Process and ProcessStartInfo to start a program
(a command line tool, exe) and redirect the output to the web page. It uses the username and password properties of the ProcessStartInfo class to run the exe tool as a specific user. The tool requires admin privelages so I need to run it as such, but certianly don't want to run the IIS service or the asp.net app pool under an admin context.
No exception occurs when run on IIS, but it does not work, when trying to run on IIS 6 I get this error dialog: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on ok to terminate the application." It's obviously a security/config issue, but what specifically is the culprit? For IIS 6, an application pool was created for this, runs under 'network service', as usual, but again the process being started by the system.diagnostics.process class is run under a different account, which is an administrator account. For IIS 7.5, same thing,an app pool was created, so it runs under the 'iis appPoolNameOfPool' context.

C# Storing Alternate Text In Session Variable Or Retrieving From Db?
Mar 2, 2010I'm building a web system and various clients will have alternate text for default instances throughout the site. One place is the main nav but there are others. The default may be "project" but they may want to call it "event".I'm heading down the road of calling all the terminology settings (there's a list of about 15) and creating an ArrayList that has the id and either the default or their replacement as the items in the ArrayList.I've also got a enum key list called TermKey that has the defaults and the corresponding ID number.
Throughout the code I'll reference TermKey.Project and then do one of these things that I see as options.
1-pull the text from the session (if the client has set it to "event" then the text "event" will be waiting for the call there)2-pull the text from the database every time I need it.3-pull the client's list each time a page loads.Some thoughts on the impact each way or if there is a best practice for
Generating Images: Alternate Font By User Agent (OS)?
Jun 7, 2010I need to generate small images for certain parts of text. Those will have to fit into the text seamlessly. I know I can not make up for every browser font settings available, but how do I have to check for Linux, Mac and Windows users depending on the user agent? I want to use the right font (of the three "Verdana, Arial, Helvetiva") for the right user agent OS.
So:How do I check for the OS? What do I have to compare to in the user agentWhere can I get the other two fonts. Does the Windows-included Verdana look the same as the one used on Linux (or, is it free anyway? I don't know much about fonts)? Where do I get Helvetica? Is it Mac OS licensed?
Any code examples can be in either c# or VB.NET. I can read both.
