Debug Http 500 Errors
Jun 9, 2010
I've developed a fairly simple web service which receives an xml string, validates it and passes it on to our internal database. This has been written to enable one of our clients to send us idocs from their SAP system. The trouble is that, although the web service works fine from a .net program, over the internet, the client's SAP system can't access it. They either get just an http 200 back (rather than the status code that the web service should supply) or they get http 500 'Internal Server Error'. I was wondering if anyone else has had issue's with ASP.NET web services from non 1qs`asp.net applications, or whether anyone can give me any advice on debugging http 500 errors.

I am using ASP.Net + .Net 3.5 + VSTS 2008 + IIS 7.0 + C# to develop a web application. I want to use Fiddler to debug (i.e. monitor request and response Http traffic) local traffic -- i.e. when I test web application inside VSTS 2008's built-in test ASP.Net web server. Is that feasible? If yes, how to monitor such traffic? For example, in VSTS 2008's built-in ASP.Net test web application server, the Url I want to monitor request traffic sent to [URL] and its response (i.e. when F5 is pressed in VSTS 2008).
BTW: I previously think Fiddler could only be used to monitor port 80 Http traffic, not sure whether port 1870 could be monitored?

Do anyone of you know how to handle XXX.X IIS HTTP errors in a web.config file? I tried doing the following:
<customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="error.aspx">
<error statusCode="403" redirect="error403.aspx" />
<!--NOTE: The following does not work-->
<error statusCode="403.9" redirect="error403.9.aspx" />
<!--ENDNOTE-->
<error statusCode="404" redirect="error404.aspx" />
</customErrors>
But obviously that didn't worked, because the web.config file expects an integer as the statusCode value.

I have created an app_offline.htm file for an ASP.NET MVC2 application running on IIS7 / Win2008 64-bit, and ensured that it's over 512 bytes (it's 2KB right now). On my dev box running Visual Studio 2010, it works like a charm, but when I put it on the production box, all I get is the generic HTTP 500 error saying "The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred."
What's especially strange is that I don't get anything logged in the application event log, nor does ELMAH pick anything up. I've disabled custom errors, put FormsAuthentication location exceptions for the file, ensured I'm not referencing any other files (images, etc.), but nothing fixes it.

I recently upgraded from VWD 2008 Express to VWD 2010 Express. A problem has developed in that the website's graphics no longer appear in Design mode, there are "Error Creating Control" error messages that did not exist before, and also debugging errors that did not exist before. (Note: these problems did not exist when I first used VWD 2010; they may have originated with recent automatic Windows updates (I use Vista Home Premium SP2 with IIS 7)). The problem exists if I open the website either as a project file or as a website directory.

If I were to specify a page for redirect using the ASP.NET Custom Errors feature, would my application still spit out the HTTP status code for that particular error?
For example if had a line in my web.config that had all Internal Server Errors redirect to Errors/500.aspx and then I encountered a 500 error, I would then be redirected to my custom Errors/500.aspx page. Will my application still respond with a HTTP 500 at any point in this exchange?

I have a C# web forms ASP.NET 4.0 web application that uses Routing for URLs for some reason custom errors defined in the system.web section of my web.config is entirely ignored and it will fall back the IIS errors.
This gets entirely ignored
[code]....
This would be a minor inconvenience except that by the fact it falls back to IIS native instead of my application it completely circumvents Elmah logging my 404 exceptions correctly.

Debug-Start Debugging/Debug-StartWithoutDebugging OR Project ASP.Net Configuration launches Dreamweaver. It started lastnight, I had both Deamweaver and VWD 2008 express open at the same time - (I was looking at JQuery in the Microsoft and Dreamweaver enviroments simultaniously). After the first tie this happened, I closed down Dreamweaver (CS3) and it opened when I tried to run my VWD project. I reinstalled VWD 2008 express, IIS and disabled Dreamweaver (renamed the exe). Dreamweaver still came up.

When I build my program, if there's one error that prevents it from running, instead of just getting the one error I'll get around 50 additional errors in addition to the real one such as:
Error 27 Validation (XHTML 1.0 Transitional): This name contains uppercase characters, which is not allowed.
Is there any way to not show these?

When I use WatiN to go to a specific web page, how can I fake the HTTP referrer with a query string (i.e. request is from google search with query string q=search_term)? So I can verify that the response header has the 301 redirect for specific referrer URL.

Background:
We are using the Facebook API and receive back URLs for profile image thumbnails. Unfortunately the protocol is restricted to just HTTP and it doesn't support HTTPS. The page on our site that hosts the thumbnails is always delivered via HTTPS, and if we use HTTP for the thumbnails the user will receive security warnings from their browser.
Solution:
Build an HTTP Handler that "passes through" the image from the Facebook URL, but allow the handler to be called via HTTPS. Before I started coding I thought I could something like this:
Response.OutputStream = WebRequest.Create(FacebookUrlForThumbnail)
but I ended up having to save the image to an object in memory than write the image to the Response.OutputStream using the image save function.
Current Code:
[Code]....
This seems inefficient but I can't find a way of using the HTTP Handler as I orginally intended. Is there way of accomplishing the goal without creating the image memory and just "passing through" the call?

I am trying to publish an MVC 2 site in Visual Studio 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2.
As I read to do, I expand References and select:
- System.Web.MVC
- System.Web.Routing
- System.Web.Abstractions and set Copy Local to True.
Then I right click the MVC Web Project and select Publish. I select Publish Method of File System. This publishes to the local file directory I specified in a compiled down version. My first question is this: The MVC specific references whose Copy Local I set to true do not show up in the published bin file like I thought they were supposed to do. Now when I copy the files over to production it does not work.
For the top level [URL] I get: 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.
For [URL] I get: 404 - File or directory not found. The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.
For [URL] I get: 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. Can someone point me to the right way to do this?
