Use Thread.sleep For No Reason And Explain It To Programmer?

Nov 10, 2010

While passing through code in our project I came across a web method that had this code at the end of it:

thread.sleep(6000);
return true;

Now, this was done so the jQuery ajax call from the client gets delayed and the ajax animation will show for a little bit longer. This is very wrong in my eyes. There shouldn't be this kind of connection between UI and server side. If he wants the animation to take longer he can use the setTimeOut function in the client side. Here is my problem: how can I explain to the programmer why this is so wrong? Not just because the client/server thing, but why ever call thread.sleep on a website?

Javascript - Assigning Location.href, Explain Url Encoding (in Asp.net And Firefox)?

Jan 22, 2010

In some javascript, I have:var url = "find.aspx?" + "location=" + encodeURIComponent( address );
alert( url );location.href = url;where the value of address is the string "Seattle, WA".

[code]...

So I'm getting three different representations whereas I would expect that in all three places I should see what I see in the alert. My expectation is that the url I assign to location.href should show up as-is in the browser url window, and should be passed as-is to the server in Request.Url (and I would need to decode the values on the server before using them).What's happening?

Explain This Seeming Inconsistency In JQuery/Javascript? (trailing Brackets Inconsistency On Reads)

Feb 18, 2010

So, in my example below, "InputDate'" is an input type=text, "DateColumn" is a TD within a table with a class of "DateColumn".

Read the value of a discreet texbox:

var inputVal = $('#InputDate').val();

Read the value of a div within a table....

This works:

$('#theTable .DateColumn').each(function() {
var rowDate = Date.parse($(this)[0].innerHTML);
});

This doesn't:

$('#theTable .DateColumn').each(function() {
var rowDate = Date.parse($(this)[0].innerHTML());
});

The difference is the "()" after innerHTML. This behavior seems syntactically inconsistent between how you read a value from a textbox and how you read it from a div. I'm ok with sometimes, depending on the type of control, having to read .val vs .innerHTML vs.whateverElseDependingOnTheTypeOfControl...but this example leads me to believe I now must also memorize whether I need trailing brackets or not on each property/method.

So for a person like me who is relatively new to jQuery/Javascript....I seem to have figured out this particular anomaly, in this instance, but is there a convention I am missing out on, or does a person have to literally have to memorize whether each method does or does not need brackets?

Best Practices For Using MVC With A Dictionary-like Model?

Feb 11, 2011

I'm about to begin an ASP.NET MVC project and I'm not sure how to approach an aspect of the design. Basically, there is a user site and an admin site. In the admin sites, administartors design a form and send an e-mail link out to a handful of people. When the users click on the link, they are sent to the form.

Essentially what I'm wondering is what are the best practices when the model resembles looks more like a dictionary than a table?

In other words, instead of:

CREATE TABLE FormResponse (ResponseId, FormId, UserId, FirstName, LastName, BirthDay, Comments)

...containing 1 row per complete response

It's more like:

CREATE TABLE FormResponse (ResponseId, FormId, UserId, QuestionId, Value)

...containing 4 rows. 1 for the FirstName, 1 for the LastName, 1 for the BirthDay, and 1 for Comments.

MVC :: Modify The Routes Dictionary?

Feb 16, 2010

how to do routing. My problem basically relates to "logged in" and "logged out routes" and having both as "/".

i.e. I have home/index for logged out user which appears as "/" but this has got me confused as to how I can have home/home for logged in user and still have "/".

I keep getting 127.0.0.1/home/home

I could modify like 127.0.0.1/home - but I want it like "/". My confusion relates to the fact that the "/" [127.0.0.1/] is bound in the routes collection to home/index.

how I can modify the routes dictionary (which will be binded ONCE at the start) so that the "/" can be shared for logged and non-logged users ?

C# - Display Dictionary In ListBox?

Jan 10, 2011

I've got a little problem with displaying my Dictionary in ListBox.

public static Dictionary<String, List<String>> MyDict = new Dictionary<string,
List<String>>();
...
if(MyDict[value1] == null){
List<String> Temp_List = new List<String>();
Temp_List.Items.Add(sth);
MyDict[value1] = Temp_List;
}
else if(MyDict[value1].Count < 4){
List<String> Temp_List = new List<String>();
Temp_List = MyDict[value1];
Temp_List.Add(sth);
MyDict[value1] = Temp_List;
}

and I'd like to display in Page_Load (after logging) a ListBox which will have List from MyDict for this login. Eg.
Login is : sally
And list contains of: she, no, then
And after sally logging I'd like to see result like this:

she
no
then

and I cannot use BindingSource

C# - Bind A Dictionary To A Gridview?

Jan 7, 2011

Is it possible to automatically bind a Dictionary to a Gridview? The closest I've got is:

Dictionary<string, myObject> MyDictionary = new Dictionary<string, myObject>();
// Populate MyDictionary here.
Grid1.DataSource = MyDictionary.Values;
Grid1.DataBind();

This binds the properties in myObject to the gridview, but I'd like to get the key as well. If it's not possible, is there an alternative, e.g. use a repeater?

C# - Storing Dictionary In Session?

Jan 29, 2011

How do you create a dictionary of objects in the session? More specifically, I have a list of objects: MyList stores MyObject as the result of a linq query with the date as a parameter.

List<MyObject> Mylist;
MyList = GetObjects(TheDate);

Now I'd like to store MyList in the session object in a dictionary with the date as the key. When the page needs a MyList for a specific date, first search the dictionary and if it's blank for that date, get the data from the GetObjects query and store the result in the dictionary in the session.

var d = new Dictionary<int, MailAddress>();

ddl.DataSource = d;
