Explain This Seeming Inconsistency In JQuery/Javascript? (trailing Brackets Inconsistency On Reads)
Feb 18, 2010
So, in my example below, "InputDate'" is an input type=text, "DateColumn" is a TD within a table with a class of "DateColumn".
Read the value of a discreet texbox:
var inputVal = $('#InputDate').val();
Read the value of a div within a table....
This works:
$('#theTable .DateColumn').each(function() {
var rowDate = Date.parse($(this)[0].innerHTML);
});
This doesn't:
$('#theTable .DateColumn').each(function() {
var rowDate = Date.parse($(this)[0].innerHTML());
});
The difference is the "()" after innerHTML. This behavior seems syntactically inconsistent between how you read a value from a textbox and how you read it from a div. I'm ok with sometimes, depending on the type of control, having to read .val vs .innerHTML vs.whateverElseDependingOnTheTypeOfControl...but this example leads me to believe I now must also memorize whether I need trailing brackets or not on each property/method.
So for a person like me who is relatively new to jQuery/Javascript....I seem to have figured out this particular anomaly, in this instance, but is there a convention I am missing out on, or does a person have to literally have to memorize whether each method does or does not need brackets?

In some javascript, I have:var url = "find.aspx?" + "location=" + encodeURIComponent( address );
alert( url );location.href = url;where the value of address is the string "Seattle, WA".
[code]...
So I'm getting three different representations whereas I would expect that in all three places I should see what I see in the alert. My expectation is that the url I assign to location.href should show up as-is in the browser url window, and should be passed as-is to the server in Request.Url (and I would need to decode the values on the server before using them).What's happening?

I'm attempting to import, using VB.Net, a spreadsheet from some other users than myself. In the spreadsheet with headers, the numbers I'm importing are in the first column of the spreadsheet (Excel 2003 to 2007). I've defined my datacolumn for the column with the numbers as a "string". What's happening is the trailing zero is dropped; so 1.1 and 1.10 both appear as => 1.1.My code is attatched below.I know I'm missing something, I just don't see it!I've tried both; MicroSoft.JET.OleDb.4.0 and MicroSoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 but neither seems to make a difference.

This is a near identical problem I am having to that of this query, albeit mine is a Web Forms scenario (using routing in .NET 4) as opposed to MVC.Add a trailing slash at the end of each url?The solution that someone mentions there is only half provided unfortunately as the link to the complete solution is broken.At the moment, any trailing slash from my page routes is removed when I get the route url.This is especially problematic when I want to use the following type of inline syntax on my web form:
<a runat="server" href='<%$RouteUrl:RouteName=Posts %>'>
Again here the trailing slash is removed, despite it being present in my route table.Can anyone please help provide a clean, efficient solution to this problem? Ideally, like the 'nearly complete' solution provided in the other Stack Overflow thread I've put above?

I am trying to sort out a trailing '/' problem I have. Below is what I have in the web.config. I think I need to add a line in the add input section. If he server receives a direct request for an image say /images/image.jpg then it is rewriten to /images/image.jpg/ - this is a major problem as I have customer 404 error pages to deal with all the page requests. I have had 1000's of exception errors because of this yesterday.

While passing through code in our project I came across a web method that had this code at the end of it:
thread.sleep(6000);
return true;
Now, this was done so the jQuery ajax call from the client gets delayed and the ajax animation will show for a little bit longer. This is very wrong in my eyes. There shouldn't be this kind of connection between UI and server side. If he wants the animation to take longer he can use the setTimeOut function in the client side. Here is my problem: how can I explain to the programmer why this is so wrong? Not just because the client/server thing, but why ever call thread.sleep on a website?

I have an action for which the output is fairly static, until another action is used to update the datasource for the first action. I use HttpResponse.RemoveOutputCacheItem to remove that action's cached output so that it is refreshed next time the user loads it.Basically I have an action like this:
[OutputCache(Duration=86400, Location=OutputCacheLocation.Server)]
public ActionResult Index()
{
return ...
}

I receive lists from a web service and then I convert the lists to datatable and then I add the datatables to a dataset and from there I get the xml from the dataset where I can save it into a sql database. But the problem is that the xml has /r/n between all attributes and elements. I dont know how to get this out of the xml. Can this be because of my converter. If so can anyone give me a better way to get multiple lists into a dataset.

I have a dropdown on my page that reads a value from the users session.
ddlMemberGender.SelectedValue = Session("MemberGender")
there are two choices (obviously) : Man and Woman
So when the Session value sets the DropDown to Male it works fine. But if the user changes the DropDown to Woman in my code behind it still reads "Male" as the value... for example:
Response.Redirect("/post.aspx?Gender=" + ddlSearchMemberGender.SelectedValue) will still read the selected value that was set previously instead of the value it was changed to.

I have a website hosted with sql 2008 database on Godaddy. Here's my problem descriptionbefore I actually begin implementing.Entries are made in a table named "XYZ" by a third party program. Now, there are multipleclients (could be asp.net ajax web based or vb.net desktop clients which I have not decided yet) who
read data from this "XYZ" table every 10-15 seconds. The connection string used by these clients would be same. If I have 10000-20000 clients making connections and querying same table, would that cause any breakdown? Since my connection string is same, connection pooling isautomatically in place.
What else do you think I need to take care of? Or is there any better way to implement this setup?Also, should I go for asp.net ajax client implementation or vb.net(c#) client implemtation ?Your inputs would be highly helpful to me. I am looking for a medium to long term solution to thissetup.

the result is
NO SUBJECT

why result doesn't not like what I expected? I think the result should be
NO SUBJECT
1 [MIS]
does the reason is square brackets ?

I have Unicode text being displayed on an ASP.NET page. The text is enclosed by two square brackets, as soon as Arabic text appears the ending bracket goes reverse, e.g."[Hi there]" becomes "[ [arabic". Is this a browser issue? The brackets are hard-coded and only the enclosing text is dynamic.
Here is some sample code. The variable resultString contains the Unicode text.
<%
Response.Write("[" + resultString+ "] ");
%>

I have couple of DDL's which let user choose couple of different values from it. Once the user has made his selection he clicks on the "Submit" buttion which redirects the user to the other page, which then displays table from backend SQL DB. The pages are named Page1.aspx and Page2.aspx resp. I am using Querystring to carry forward the values of the DDL's to Page2.aspx.
How can i modify the query in such a way that even if one of the DDL's is left blank the Query would ignore that and shall produce the table considering value of DDL2 in the where clause. In case both the DDL's are empty then the query will not have a where clause and shall showcase the complete table as such. I've written a query for this but it's not working the way it shoul.Here is my code for the SQLDataSource: [Code]....

I'm using the standard asp:Login control, and we have a user who recently changed her password to include an angular bracket. When she tries to login, she gets an error message, and I get the standard 'dangerous request' exception.
I know I can set ValidateRequest="false" on the page to negate this, but I was hoping someone knew of a better way.

PHP experience (which meaby is causing this problem) and Iam having small problem passing data from codebehind to view-source.
I declared string variable on codebehind side such as:
...
public string mystring = "Scotty";
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
...
So now I want to use it in view-code but when I put it in angle brackets (<%: or <%=) and put it in head element I got no access to this value. On the other hand when I put it in BODY element everything is ok.
My failing example (simplified):
<head runat="server">
<script language="javascript">
function beamMeUp()
{
alert(<%=mystring;%>);
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<input type="button" onclick="javascript:beamMeUp" value="Warp6" />
</body>
why I can't use it (the <%=mystring;%>) in HEAD but i can use it in BODY ?
