Does Forms Authentication Work With Web Load Balancers
Jul 28, 2010
I'm working on a web application that is using Forms authentication.
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms slidingExpiration="true"
loginUrl="~/User.aspx/LogOn"
timeout="15"
name="authToken" />
</authentication>
I'm seeing this cookie set in my browser when I log in:
The question is what happens when I put this website in a load balanced model? Where is the ASP.net session cookie being set? I didn't explicitly do it in code, so I assume it's happening behind the scenes somewhere in ASP.Net.
Also, If the session cookie is set by web server A, I assume web server B won't recognize it and treat it as an invalid session. If this is the case, I probably don't want to use it, right?

I currently have a web application deployed on our intranet and it uses Active Directory to authenticate the user.It all works fine. But now im asked to somehow grant access to the application for outside vendors that are not part of AD, but they still need to keep the functionality of the AD as they dont want to manage all the users that currently use the application.Is this possible in some way?Currently users dont need to enter a password or username as they are part of AD, but users who are not get the " You are not authorized to view this page..."message. Is there any way to avoid that message and allow them to login using their own password?

my ASP.NET app works fine on my development PC, but when I deploy it on the server, the Forms Authentication won't work. The page is being redirected to the "login.aspx" page, but when I enter a valid username/password and hit the login button, it also goes to the login.aspx page (with no errors and no throw, it keeps like this forever).
I am using the default ASP.NET Membership provider, I have setup the hosting server to be exactly as my PC, so both have same settings of IIS, ASP.NET 4.0 Global Configuration (in IIS), and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
I searched for this problem in google and tried several suugestion (like removing the clear() in web.config, manually add the membership/role provider in web.config, change security in the physical folders, etc...) but with no luck.Below is my web.config (which is working fine in my development PC): [Code]....

I have been browing forums & googling for a couple of hours this morning, trying to find an answer to what (to me) should be a very simple issue. (I am a Delphi programmer moving somewhat reluctantly to Visual Studio C# , for web apps) I have created the simplest ASP.NET website in Visual Studio, containing a Textbox and a Button. When the website loads, I want Textbox1 to have focus. Simply doing
[Code]....
and this too does not work. However, if I press the Enter key when the webpage is displayed, then focus does move to TextBox1 (and pressing Enter again will fire any code attached to Button1). Surely it cannot be this hard to perform something so simple?

I'm trying to upgrade my mvc 1.0 application that had a custom written login. I assign the authcookie like this:
[code]...
And here if I debug _authRoles has "Admin" in it, and isAuthorized is always false.
If I check the "ticket" it has some: UserData = "Admin".
What can be wrong there? Is it the "User.IsInRole" that is different, or do I need to add something in web.config?

i have an application and a user must log-in before he/she can access pages. now once the user logs in i keep the user details in a session variable (say Session["CurrentUser"]).now if a user tries to jump to a page directly i will check if the Session["CurrentUser"] has a value or not...if not then the user will be directed to the login page...my problem is that i have done this or rather say written this "Checking Code" on almost all the pages.

I tried to develop the asp.net 3.5 by using the windows authetication and it seems to work fine. I had tried this code on my machine (local iis6):
Response.Write(User.Identity.Name.toString());
It returned correctly "my windows login usernameDomainname" however, I tried to deploy it on the windows server 2008, it returned "computer name/Administrator" Then, I tried to access this page from my computer which was redirected to 401 error. Moreover, I looked for the system property which showed that this server and my machine are on the same domain group.

I have a intranet site with Windows Authentication. I have 'Administrator' pages in an 'Administrator' folder that will only show for those in the admin group (windows security group) These pages work
I have a folder with sub folders containing reports. These permissions are broken down for each type of report. They have similar role priveleges. When I test the application, I can navigate to the pages. When I deploy the site live on the intranet the links don't return a page. Error missing link 404. Do I need to set something in IIS?

I have a page with two CollapsiblePanelExtender controls on it. The page is a multi-stage process which posts back to itself several times as the user steps through the process. All the page controls, includung the CollapsiblePanelExtenders are in an update panel and the page is derived from a master page.
When the page first loads, the CollapsiblePanelExtenders don't work properly - an open one will close on clicking, as epxected, but they only re-open intermittently and quickly reach a state where they won't re-open at all. However, once a user has initiated a postback by clicking on a form button, they work fine from there on in.
I can't work out what's causing this problem. Simply making the form post back to itself on load doesn't do anything, and neither does running the code that's initiated by the button click. I found - quite by accident - that inserting a StartupScript with an error (any error at all - just insert the the letter "a" in a script tag will do) into the page fixes the problem! But obviously that's not a satisfactory solution.

'm using the AutoCompleteExtender from the AJAX control toolkit on my aspx page - I have it wired up to a WCF service that is returning a string array and everything works happily.
If I change my service definition to include a demand for the caller to be authenticated, like so:
<OperationContract(), PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Authenticated:=True)> _Public Function GetLookupValues(ByVal prefixText As String, ByVal count As Integer, ByVal contextKey As String) As String()
Then the autocomplete extender stops working, and I get an authentication error in the service. The service is set up to use ASPNetCompatibility mode, and I was hoping that the extender would pass the authentication credentials for my logged in user - does anyone know how to make this work?

I have developed the authenticated rss feed using the basic http authentication for my site.I also have the admin module for the site which uses the Asp.net Forms Authentication .Both are in the same project.When i turn on the forms authentication module to None in my web.config.My rss feed authentication works fine(the browser pop up the dialog box for the username and password) and upon entering the username and password the rss feed gets displayed.But with forms authentication turn on when i click the rss feed link i am getting redirected to the administrator login page.
If i set my authentication mode to none than the feed works like dream but the admin module do not work as it uses forms authentication.
How can i resolve the conflict for that one.I am using the asp.net mvc filter on my feed contoller to pop up the dialog box for the username and password.

I have an (ASP.NET 3.5) intranet application which has been designed to use forms authentication (along with the default aspnet membership system). I also store additional information about users in another table which shares its primary key with the aspnet_users table.
For users who are part of our domain I store their domain account name in the secondary users table, and I want to automatically log in users whose domain account name matches a name stored in the table.
I have read the guides which are available - they're all from two years ago or more and assume that you are able to activate Windows Authentication on a separate login page that allows you to extract the domain account name. From what I can tell, though, this is not possible in IIS7 (the overall authentication method is applied on all pages and cannot be selectively deactivated, and both authentication methods can't be applied on the same page).
Is there a way of getting IIS to pass through the windows domain account name of the requesting user? I don't need proper AD authentication, just the domain name.

We have a non-SSL ASP.NET web app that allows a user to login (ASP forms authentication, inproc).
Once authenticated, we redirect their browser to an external, SSL secured page on another web site / domain altogether that we do not control.
The client is redirected back to a pre-configured url on our original http web app when done.
However, the customer is then asked to "re-login" again on our side which is undesired...
It seems the forms authentication cookie is destroyed when transitioning between HTTP and HTTPS and back again.
How can I keep the forms authentication cookie alive so that the customer does not have to re-authenticate on the round trip?

I'm developing an internal booking sytem. Users log in to the sytem and can view existing bookings and search for bookings. They can also create new or edit existing bookings. When completing such actions I need a confirmation prior to completing the booking or updating the recorded. The confirmation is based on a reauthentication of the user.... in otherwords he needs to enter his passord again.
How can I achieve this? The system is internam and I'm using Forms Authentication. I an also using roles as som of the admin forms can only be viewed by administrators.
