DropDownList AutoPostback Fires When Asynchronous Postback Occurrs?

Well I have a strange problem.I have a page with 2 DropDownLists on it and a custom web-user-control. The custom web user control has an UpdatePanel within it, and an Ajax Timer control within the UpdatePanel to periodically update a listing of stuff.When I "drop-down" one of the DropDownLists and hover over (not click on) an option while the Timer control within the UpdatePanel asynchronously posts back to the server, the DropDownList "autopostbacks" to the server!

I'm trying to figure out why an asynchronous postback would cause the DropDownList to act as if I selected/clicked on an option so that I can find a way around this issue.Now it's really simple to reproduce this problem. Create a Web User control called "TimerUpdatedListing"...this is the ASPX code markup for the web user control:

<%@ Control Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeBehind="TimerUpdatedListing.ascx.vb" Inherits="MyNamespace.TimerUpdatedListing" %>
<div style="width: 150px; height: 150px; overflow: auto; border: solid 1px navy;">
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="anUpdatePanel" runat="server">

DropDownList Always Does Full-page Postback, The First Time It Fires?
I have an ASP.NET page using the AJAX library. There is a dropdownlist inside an UpdatePanel, which on index changing is supposed to update a different UpdatePanel to modify a grid control.But after the page first comes up, and you adjust the ddl, the entire page postbacks, followed by a (correct) partial postback. After this one time, every other usage of the ddl performs correctly, trigger partial postbacks.

Both the panel and the ddl are being added from code. The UP is Conditional updates and ChildrenAsTriggers = true. The dropdownlist is AutoPostBack true and has an event set up on SelectedIndexChanged.So what is going on? I've tried adjusting every setting I can think of and still the page completely refreshes once, then works fine after that.

Jquery - Delay A AutoPostBack So JavaScript Fires First?
I've got an odd situation with a text box and an autocomplete setup on my page. I'm using a JQuery based autocomplete on a text box that has AutoPostBack="True". This works perfect if I use the keyboard to select an autocomplete item, which then fires Jquery to fill in the text box, and then when I tab out of the box the AutoPostBack fires. If, however, I click on an autocomplete item, my text box loses focus first and the AutoPostBack fires before the Jquery has a chance to change the text in my text box. Is there a way to delay either the PostBack or the Jquery so that they don't fight each other? I'm thinking it may have to be the PostBack that gets changed, since the JQuery would lose it's state on the PostBack

TextBox And Calendar Extender When Using AutoPostBack=true Never Fires?
I have the following sample code

[Code]....

[Code]....

When I place a value in TextBox1 and then click inside TextBox3 (which is there to have a place to go to get out of TextBox1 and TextBox2) the value from TextBox1 remains and is displayed in the MessageBox.Show correctly.

When I pick a value from the drop down calendar extender in TextBox2 for a brief micro-second the value from the calendar displays in TextBox2 and then the MessageBox.Show displays and the value in TextBox2 returns back to the orginally set value. The MessageBox.Show shows the orginally set value.

For TextBox2 if I set AutoPostBack=false then the TextBox2 works correctly and keeps the date picked from the calendar extender but theontextchanged="TextBox2_TextChanged" never fires.

Second Postback Fires - Stops First Running In Track?
I understand that asp:link button is a control with JS that forces a postback. I have code that runs on OnClick in codebehind of this linkbutton. I placed a counter (with the aid of viewstate) within this code to count the number of times the event fires. The first time it fires the code runs, but as the process is a little long, when the second postback fires it stops the first running in its tracks, so the execution is incomplete. I have googled this issue, and found that some say an img tag with out a complete src address forces a postback, I examined my source and I have no bad src's. The link button is on a complicated ascx page with many controls etc, so I cant post it here. Is there a way to CANCEL the link button immediately OnClick so it only runs once?

AJAX :: How To Change GridView Page On Asynchronous Postback
I am working with a GridView that is inside of an UpdatePanel. The sorting and paging asynchronous postbacks work properly. Each row has a delete link that causes an asynchronous postback. The record representing that row is deleted, and the GridViewRow has its 'Visible' property set to false.

When the row being deleted is the only row on the current page, I would like to have the GridView return to the previous page, but I am having problems.

On my masterpage, I have a ScriptManager:

[Code]....

And the UserDeleteControl only has one LinkButton:

[Code]....

With this method, the deleted row is hidden, but if it is the last row on a page, The GridView sits on the empty page. Doing a full refresh of the page will remove the empty page from the pager and return to a populated page, but I would like to avoid a full reload.

Setting applicationUsersGrid.PageIndex does not work
Calling applicationUsersGrid.DataBind does not work
I even tried ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript to call the previous page postback on the pager link, but no luck

Web Forms :: DropDownList Loses Selection On Autopostback?
I have a DetailsView that contains a DropDownList, bound to an objectdatasource, and I need to show/hide other fields in the view based on the DropDownLists's selection. So the ddl is set to autopostback and in the detailsView Load handler I show/hide the fields as needed, which works. But each postback clears any text field data input or selected.

On the first postback, the DropDown loses its selected value and goes back to default. On subsequent postbacks, it retains its choice, but is the only field to do so.

How To Prevent AutoPostBack When DropDownlist Is Selected Using JQuery
I want to show a confirm dialog when the user selects an item in a DropDownList. If the user presses "Cancel", I want to stop the postback. Here is the function I add to the onchange event:

function imitateConfirmUnload(event) {
if (window.onbeforeunload = null)
return true;

return confirm("Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page?

You have unsaved changes

Press OK to continue or Cancel to stay on the current page.");
}

And this is the relevant bit of code in my startup script to add the handler to the event:

[code]...

The problem is that the postback occurs even if the user selects "Cancel". If I move the handler on to the click event, it works. But it feels clunky to me.

Edit

Correction: it doesn't work onclick, because the dialog prevents selection, so when the user selects OK, no change has taken place, and no postback when you want it!

Edit 2

The DropDownList is inside an UpdatePanel so that may affect behavior.

RenderControl Method Not Rendering Autopostback For Dropdownlist?
why asp.net does not render a dropdownlist with the autopostback property set to true when using the RenderControl method.

eg

Dim sw As New IO.StringWriter

my output renders the dropdown list without the onchange="javascript:setTimeout('__doPostBack(ddl1','')', 0)" that is generated by asp.net when using the dropdownlist normally.

AJAX :: Asynchronous Data Load In Dropdownlist?
first i'll describe my problem:

I have payment form with a clients dropdownlist that is populated from a database on form load with:

value field = clientIdtext field = nameId
<asp:DropDownList ID="selClients" runat="server">
</asp:DropDownList>

When user makes a payment, it's necessary to chose a client from selClients, and so i get the clientsId value and build my insert SQL query.

Until here, no problems.

The problem with my UI has started since i had a lot of clients been registered: My dropdownlist became huge and it's taking too much time to load it's contents on page load. Also the dropdownlist area is taking a large area from page screen.

So i tryied a solution with jquery autocomplete plug in. I put a textbox with autocomplete for client name and another hiddenfield to receive the clientId when user select a item.

That solves both problems:

No more large amout of data loaded on page loadThe dropdownlist doesn't take a large area from page screen
But it gave me another problem!

With a textbox, there is a possibility for wrong input client name. So if i don't have a valid clientId in hiddenfield, it will generate a database INSERT exception because it doesn't respect the client table constraint:

payment table REFERS client table

I'm trying to find kind of dropdownlist where the user can type text with autocomplete. Like this, the user will be able to select only data within the possibilities of the dropdownlist and i always will have a valid clientId.

Forms Data Controls :: Dropdownlist Autopostback Updates Label
I'm working with a detailsview and havea dropdownlist within my detailsview in one oftheedititemtemplates. I want the selected value in the dropdownlist to edit what is showing in alabel.For example:

CategoryName (ID=categorynameDDL)
CategoryDescription (ID=CategoryLabel)

The above are linked via a sqldatasource to a table that has CategoryName, CategoryDescription and CategoryID as fields. When the CategoryName is changed in the dropdownlist I want the CategoryDescription in the label to update to theDescription associated with the same CategoryID. So let's say the user selects "Calculators" from the dropdownlist the following would be displayed:

CategoryName = Calculators
CategoryDescription = A vast array of widely used calculators.

Whereas if the user selected "Monitors" from the dropdownlist the following would be displayed:

CategoryName = Monitors
CategoryDescription = A wide selection of monitors for your viewing pleasure.

So when the CategoryName is changed (using the dropdownlist), the autopostback updates the label. How is this done?

State Management :: Disabling ViewState For DropDownList And Using AutoPostback With SelectedIndexChanged?

I've done a lot to remedy this but I have an issue relating to DropDown lists that use AutoPostbacks.I have a dropdown list with a lot of list items and a good part of the ViewState usage is to hold the list item data. If I disable ViewState and set the AutoPostBack property to true, the page will post back and in the page load I am trying to repopulate the dropdown list with cached data. However, it seems that the SelectedIndexChanged event doesn't fire when EnableViewState="false".Is it possible to make this work without enabling ViewState for the drodown list?

Forms Data Controls :: DropDownList And AutoPostBack: IE8 Vs Chrome And Firefox?
I have a DropDownList in a GridView with AutoPostBack="true" and on SelectedIndexChanged fires an event.

[Code]....

Everything works fine across browsers as long as the user is scrolling through the DropDownList using a mouse.In IE8, things start to go haywire when the user is navigating the DropDownList using up/down arrows on the keyboard. The SelectedIndexChange event is fired with nearly every up/down key pressed. In Firefox 3 and Chrome 9, the behavior is more like what I would expect, that the event isn't fired until the user stops on DropDownList selection and hits the enter key.

Is there something that I should be doing in IE, short of setting AutoPostBack="false", so that the event is fired every time the up/down arrows are used on the keyboard?
