I am a very new learner to asp.net. guide me with some example. My problem is that when we use formview with some sqldatasource bind to it. want to use Dropdown list in it to select the item.... i.e if using some employees list... data to be displayed on the EMPLOYEE NO selected in the dropdown list. Further in the edit/insert/update mode values to be updated on the values selected in in other dropdown lists like post from Dropdown list showing posts which is fetched from any other table.
I have an Index view that shows a list of employees and a Create partial view with a form and submit button to create employees. In the Index view, I have:
@{Html.RenderAction("Create");}
A user sees a blank form to create employees and a list of employees. After the user has typed data in the form and clicked the submit button, the form should become blank and the list of employees should be refreshed, showing employees plus the new employee.
The problem is I don't know what to return from the Create action:
public ActionResult Create(Employee employee) { return ??? }
I have 6 form all include jobnumber n in 1st form name creative it is primary key and in remaining form its is foreign key i want to pu drop down aganist job number in remaining form so user can easily access the job number how can i?
Alright so I want to create a form, where the text in the textboxs will be sent to my database, after the user hits sumbit. The problem I am facing is i am used to using a detailsview or formview to do this for me, but how can I do this myself, where I manuelly update my database.
I have a list page that show a list to records base on the search value entered in a form on the top of the page. When I click on one of the record to go to the edit detail page, and then click on "Back" in the browser or the "Cancel" button on the page, it will go back to the list page, but the form on the list page will not retain the value entered earlier.
How to retain form value in MVC's view after went to another page?

I am integrating ASP.NET MVC in an existing ASP.NET web form project. I have added required references and folders in web form project. However, when I right click on View folder to add a new view I don't get Add  View option.Is there a way to get MVC wizard/template in ASP.NET web form project.
I am building a DropDownList control dynamically. Constraining this discussion to within just the OnInit() method / state in the asp.net lifecycle, is the only way to see the dropdownlist's posted value to look at the Request.Form NameValueCollection? I m aware that the dropdownlist's viewstate is restored by the time OnLoad() is reached, but I need it's value before then (im pretty sure LoadViewState($object) is of no use?)
I have been trying to figure out what the proper method is to be able to have a dropdownlist on the same form that holds a number of textboxes for properties. I am using a strongly typed typed view which was generated by the Visual Studio IDE so it contains textboxes for all of the properties of my strongly typed class. The class has a few properties that can have a set of possilbe answers; I'd like to displat those possible answers in a dropdownlist and then when the user fills in the form and clicks the submit button the selected item would be transferred to the correct property. I have a solution but think there must be a better solution out there and was wondering if anyone might point me in the right direction.So say I have a model with 3 properties, FirstName, LastName. and MaritalStatus.If I generated a view for this then I'd get an aspx file with the following:
I'm trying to figure out if there's a good way to remove the duplication in this scenario. Here's the model ... a Person that contains two Addresses:

The entire Address block is duplicated ... one for the Home address, one for the Work address. To remove duplication, I tried factoring out the Address block into a partial view, and doing this in place of the two divs above:
[Code]....
And the page renders fine, but when it gets posted back on form submit, the model binding doesn't work. (Of course it doesn't work ... the <input> tags for the address blocks both have name="Street", so there's no way for the model binder to know whether to shove that into HomeAddress or WorkAddress.)

I am currently working on my first ASP.NET project - a basic blog site. I based it upon the default project in VS and the NerdDinner tutorial. I can create posts, view posts, etc.
I now want to write the mechanism to comment on a post. I created a CommentForm.ascx which allows a comment to be created, and then added

into View.aspx (the page to view a single post). However, this View inherits from the Post model, so this doesn't work. How can I have a view which displays one model (the post) with a form to edit another (the comment)?
I have a formview that I want to prepopulate some values based on some dropdowns that the end user chooses.
The formview is in insert mode tied to a datasource so the insert will be easy because it is tied to a dataset.
Just thinking of best way to prepopulate these fields. I am going for a best practice these days.
The one way I planned on doing it, was after they selected the dropdowns I will grab the values from the datasource and do a findcontrol on the formview to populate them.
I have a form written in C# with a SQL database to hold the data. At the end of the form, there is a DropDownList control that is blank upon the initial entry. If a user selects anything in that drop down box, upon saving the form, a new form with the same format will be created and the last form will be locked for editing. I have no idea on how to implement this or how to start on this.I'm kinda new to ASP.NET so bare with me please.
i have a multiline textbox on the form for the user to enter some description. On its OnTextChnaged event, i m using the text in the textbox and populate a dropdownlist with some values.

i dont want the page to go back to the server to populate the ddlist, which does take a considerable time.

Long story short, I'm trying to add a few extra items to ViewData to make my life easier, and its an edge case that doesn't really justify its own model just for this one case. Keep reading for more specific details.
So I have a strongly typed edit view for one of my objects, everything works great until I try to put a dropdownlist on the view with an ID that does not match a property of my class.

My expectation is that in the controller action that accepts the POST, I will manually use the FormCollection[] to read out that ID and populate MyOtherModel with the correct ID.
I have an EditTask View for editing the following properties for a Task that I am modeling.
[Task Name] [Project Name] [Assigned Employee]
Task Name and Project Name are just simple text boxes.
I want Assigned Employee to be a selection from all the available Employee's currently in the database. Dropdownlist is not really an ideal option because there could be hundreds if not more possible employees.
I'm thinking a link to show a select employee grid listing in either a popup or another page where filtering can take place (b/c employee has other properties such as Dept) and the selection is made and the EditTask view is updated would be ideal but not sure. I'm new to ASP.NET MVC so I'm a little lost on where to start to implement this.
What is the best way to handle this UI scenario in ASP.net MVC?

I have a view with a form strongly typed to MyViewModel This view allows you to enter values for the properties of MyObject, as well as create a list of MyList objects. The List part works fine although I thought that would be the more difficult of the two. Assuming MyObject has a property Description I create a textbox to enter the value as such:
@Html.EditorFor(x => x.myObject.Description); The text box renders with an id of MyObject_Description...The problem is when I post this to my controller action, MyObject does not get bound at all(althought the list items do as they recieve the appropriate IDs of "MyViewModel_MyList[guid].myListValue") What am I doing wrong here?? EDIT: more info The first line of the view is: @model MyApp.ViewModels.MyViewModel And the Action method: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(MyViewModel myViewModel) { } I am passing a new MyViewModel into the partial view to begin... public ActionResult Create() { MyViewModel model = new MyViewModel(); return PartialView(model); } EDIT 2 Ok When I render my partial view that contains the forms I call : @{Html.RenderAction("Create", "MyController");} this is called from within a View of type @model IEnumerable<MyApp.Models.MyObject> (this view displays a list of currently existing MyOjects, and at the bottom the partial is rendered to allow the user to add another MyObject to the DB)
