Expose WebHttpBinding EndPoint In Framework 4.0?
Oct 2, 2010
I'm trying to expose a webHttpBinding EndPoint using Framework 4.0.
<endpoint address="web" binding="webHttpBinding" contract="MyContract"/>
However, when browsing using WFC Test Client, I see nothing. If I change my Framework target to 3.5, it works fine.
Is there something different in 4.0 to get this to work?

I'm working on a web service that uses ASP.NET security model (i.e. with AspNetCompatibilityRequirements set to allowed). Like many others, I got an error saying the Anonymous access is required because the mexHttpBinding requires it and the only way to get around it is to remove the mex endpoint from each service as described here:
[URL]
I thought by removing mex endpoint I will no longer able to generate WSDL or add a reference to the service from Visual Studio but to my surprise everything still works. I quickly googled the "mex binding" but most web sites just say it's for "Metadata Exchange" without going into too much detail on what it actually does.

I'm kinda new to web services and want to make sure I am doing things correctly.
I have a custom object which has sub objects as well. (let's say Company object, sub object is collection of Employee objects)
I want the web service to return a collection of Company objects. Do I make the service return a Dataset and custom generate a dataset with datatables representing the different objects?
What is the best way to do this? I tried to just serialize it, but that doesn't seem to work either.
I tried this dll
[URL]
But the output XML doesn't seem to include the sub object.

I am using a custom membership provider. I want to expose additional properties under User class.
So in my custom membership provider class I added few Properties (FirstName, LastName, Address, etc) and set their value in ValidateUser(). However back in aspx.cs if I type User. I do not see FirstName, LastName and Address in intellisense.
Is what I'm attempting to do even possible? Or do I need to resort to using my own custom user class? In which case I wouldn't need to use custom membership provider because I can program my custom user class to do everything that custom membership provider can do. Only thing is I would need to pass this user object in session object.

I have a user control with a panel on it:
CustomControl.ascx
<%@ Control Language="vb" CodeBehind="CustomControl.ascx.vb" %>
<asp:Panel ID="myPanel" runat="server"></asp:Panel>
I'd lke to expose that panel as a property that I can use at design time.
CustomControl.ascx.vb
<ParseChildren(True), PersistChildren(False)> _
Partial Public Class CustomControl
Inherits System.Web.UI.UserControl
#Region "Members and Properties"
<PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.InnerProperty)> _
Public Property SomePanel() As Panel
Get
Return myPanel
End Get
Set(ByVal value As Panel)
myPanel= value
End Set
End Property
#End Region
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Response.Write(myPanel.HasControls.ToString())
End Sub
End Class
And then bring the control onto a page like so:
<ucl:CustomControl runat="server">
<SomePanel>
<asp:Label ID="lblText" AssociatedControlID="txtBox" runat="server"></asp:Label>
<asp:TextBox id="txtBox" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>
</SomePanel>
</ucl:CustomControl>
When I run the page, HasControls is true but nothing is rendered. What am I doing wrong?

Pretend i have an existing web-site, e.g.:[URL]i now want to expose a mobile version of this web-site:
m.stackoverflow.com
IIS, with its host-header name resolution, would normally require two web-sites to be created:
www.stackoverflow.com
m.stackoverflow.com
Except now i have two web-sites in IIS. This means i have to duplicate code/files between them. i don't need to (nor do i want to) duplicate all the "model" and "controller" code between two web-sites. i would much rather have one web-site that exposes a mobile version.
i could have the default page in m.stackoverflow.com simply perform a redirect to a mobile landing page on the "real" web-site:
m.stackoverflow.comdefault.asp:
<% Response.Redirect "www.stackoverflow.com/mobile" %>
Then the client will end up at (for example) www.stackoverflow.com/mobile/default.aspx.
This isn't what i want. i want it to appear to the browser that they are visiting m.stackoverflow.com.
So what i could do in IIS is have two host-header names for one IIS web-site:
stackoverflow.com
m.stackoverflow.com
and inspect the http-request HOST header: [URL]
Host: stackoverflow.com

I'm having trouble exposing a method to a silverlight client from a WCF service although I can expose properties.
My WCF service has a LoadDeal method which returns a Deal object
public Deal LoadDeal(int dealerId)
{
Deal d = new Deal();
d.LoadDeal(dealerId);
return d;
[Code]....
This works fine and the Refernce property can be accessed from the silverlight client.
But when I try to expose a method such as the CancelEdit method below, I can't find a way to expose this method to the silverlight client:
public void CancelEdit()
{
//Add logic to cancel changes here.
}
I've tried adding the DataMember annotation but the compiler complains. I've re-compiled without an annotation and then updated the service reference but nothing seems to be working.

What is the advantage of using a Mex Endpoint over setting
[code]....
I am not able to add the service using Add Service Reference. I am not able to get the WSDL using a browser.
2. If I add the tag <serviceMetadata
httpGetEnabled="true"
and remove Mex Endpoint, I am able to query the wsdl using browser and I am still able to add a refernce using Add Service Reference.
Then, What's the specific use of Mex Endpoint.

We've got some WCF services we're hosting via IIS. The application in general uses Forms Authentication, and we'd like to continue making that available for web service clients. We just have a <authorization><deny users="?"> in our web.config and some authentication/redirection goodness that gets everything done.
The problem is we'd like for users to be able to access the metadata for the services without authentication. Can they visit /services/v1/ArtifactService.svc?wsdl anonymously and yet still require authentication for /services/v1/ArtifactService.svc/rest/GetArtifacts?studyId=123? If so, I can't figure out the right incantation in the configuration.
The best I can think of is to set an absolute URL in the metadata service behavior, but then I have to doctor the path on install anywhere we deploy. (<serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true" httpGetUrl=[URL]

I do not understand what is happening here. If I run this same bizApp referenced from a webpage my code finds the endpoint in either my web.config file for the webpage. I copy that same section and paste it into the New version of web page that uses a new WCF that contains this same bizApp and I get a can not find endpoint.

I had to move a WCF service (IIS hosted) to a new address. This service is called by a webforms web site on a different site in the same instance of IIS. I checked the WCF service is available and working by calling it directly from a browser.
I then did the following
updated the Service Reference folder in my consuming website updated the web.config servicemodel section (it was auto updated by changing the Service Reference) re-built and deployed libraries using the WCF service to the websites bin folder Stopped the consuming website in IIS and deleted files from Temporary ASP.NET Files folder Re-started IIS and deleted *ALL* files from Temporary ASP.NET files
When I browse to a page that calls the WCF service I get the error;
EndpointNotFoundException
There was no endpoint listening at <<Old endpoint address>> that could accept the message
How can I force my website to use the new WCF endpoint? Do I need to re-start the web server?

I am migrating an ASP.NET Web Service toward WCF. The old Web Service endpoint had a nice extensive description page generated from the comment of the underlying class exposed as a service endpoint. In particular, all available web methods were listed.
Is there a way to emulate somehow this behavior with WCF? At least, how can I customize the HTML content of the WCF endpoint?

I have a project ("The Project") that references an external web service. I am then referencing that project in an ASP.Net web application ("The Web Application"). When I reference "The Project" in "The Web Application" the app.config is not copied over, which isn't a problem. Does "The Project" take care of know what endpoint to use? Can the web.config override the endpoint URL? I did a test and am not reference the eternal web service in "The Web Application" and everything seemed to work ok. I guess, can I create the same configuration section, that is in "The Project's" app.config and copy it over to the web.config file to override?
Update: I guess what I really need to find out is how to change the end point of a web service when generating the code from adding a "Web Reference". I tried adding a service reference to my code, but the wsdl is not getting loaded correclty or I am doing something wrong. Update 2.0: I forgot about the URL property of the proxy that is generated by the web reference.

I have a Web service currently in an ASMX file. I want to move this code into its own class library project which generates a DLL. I want to be able to drop this DLL into any Web application and have it work. However, without an ASMX file, I have no URL endpoint. How do I get around this? Essentially, I want to run a Web service without having to distribute an ASMX. I just want to distribute a DLL. Can I map the endpoint for the Web service in the web.config, or something? (I think that perhaps WCF might do this, but one look at the config for that, and it feels like the cure is worse than the disease...)

I get "Error: Cannot obtain Metadata from http://localhost:10093/Services/Service1.svc" when attempting to access the same address from the wcftestclient.
If I place a breakpoint in the service implementation it is hit, so I assume the svc file is setup correctly:

I am writing a custom composite WebControl and want to expose styles of child controls it encapsulates to the ASP.NET designer. The code I currently have is similar to the skeleton below (which for simplicity only has one child control).
With the code below, I can see property "ChildPanelStyle" in the designer, but when I try to modify one of the properties (e.g. CssClass) in the designer, it immediately resets itself to its default value. It looks like the designer serialization isn't happening.
What am I doing wrong?
UPDATE
I've updated the sample with an additional style property that is managed directly by the custom control, rather than simply being the property of a child control.
The HeaderStyle property is persisted properly by the designer, but the ChildPanelStyle property isn't.
Of course I could manage all my styles like HeaderStyle, and apply them during rendering, but I'm hoping there's a simpler solution whereby child controls can take care of themselves, and I don't need any custom rendering.
