On my DetailsView for inserting, I have a field "manager code". When the user types in the code, I want another field "manager name" to be populated based on a lookup table in the database. I have done this on a FormView using code behind and "ontextchanged". How can I do this in DetailsView?
View 3 RepliesI have a SQL DB with just 2 fields, ID and TEXT.What i was trying to do, was placing a Detailsview in EDIT MODE, then selecting from the DB like SELEC TOP 1 Text FROM DB.Then i placed a Ajax HTML Editor in the template field.How can i, keep the HTML Editor on the page, and use it for INSERT and/OR EDITING ?e.g.: on the first time the user opens the site management page, it will be blank, so it will show the HTML with no text on it. but the bottom button will be UPDATE and CANCEL. So when he enters the TEXT he clicks on UPDATE.
View 2 RepliesFor ASP.NET, I'm using a DetailsView for insert and edit of a record. For edit mode I don't want to display the primary key field because it should not be changed. For insert mode, I want to display the primary key field because it doesn't exist and the user can specify it via a DropDownList that insures they will pick an unique value. A TemplateField is used in the DetailsView markup for the primary key field (hence the DropDownList for insert mode).
My problem is that I cannot get the primary key field to not display for edit mode and to display for insert mode. In the markup I have:

With the TemplateField Visible="True", the HeaderText="name" always displays which I don't want for edit mode. With the TemplateField Visible="False", the field never displays which I don't want for insert mode.How can I achieve the display behavior I want for insert verses edit mode. How do I set the value of a field in a detailsview to the selectedvalue of a gridview on the same page? I am also trying to set today date as value of another field in the detailsview as well as UserID. I wrote the following codebehind for the date setting:

First off - here's what I need - - when the user clicks on the NEW button in the detailsView, I have the User.Identity.name captured in a variable and I need to set one of the textboxes (InsertItemTemplate) named 'txtNew' to that name.
I've tried using the ModeChanging (and ModeChanged) event:

I have one GridView called GV_IssTypeDesc and one DetailsView called DV_IssueLog.
The scenario is that i only want GV_IssTypeDesc gridview to appear when DetailsView DV_IssueLog is in edit mode. How do i accomplish this?

The "e.NewMode" is underlined blue in color and it is stated "NewMode is not a member of System.EvntArgs".

I have a gridview and detailsview that are connected. When I delete records everything works fine except when I delete the last record in the gridview. I want the detailsview to revert to insert mode when I delete the last row in the gridview. Instead the detailsview shows up blank. I want to show the detailsview in insert mode after last row in grid has been deleted? How can do I this?

A DetailsView in Insert mode has all fields cleared after events such as the following:
1. Clicking New.
2. Clicking Cancel.
3. Clicking Insert (if the default mode is Insert).
I have some fields linked to ViewState and they are populatd at PreRender event handler. I am wondring if there is a single place where all relevant ViewState elements can be cleared instead of doing this in all possible relevant handlers such as ItemCreated, ItemCanceled, ItemInserted, etc.
I have a detailsview on my page binding a table with information about the employees. They can update their information. Some info should be visible but not updateable. I could change the update command not updating but I like the control where I can set the column to read only. In that way the employee will find the data visible and they will see that the field/column cannot be changed. But having the column read only will return a null-value into that column when editing and updating anything. Why is that? Shouldn't it just update it's read only value?

I have a insert into statement thats inserting my numbers from a numeric text box on my aspx page. I am choosing the Amount Type then putting in a a number.
So i have a drop down that i select example Direct Charge then i enter 600.00 and click add it puts that in to the databse for me woot..
I then put in say Misc Credit and enter 200.00 it inserts in that into the database woot.
The look up table that has my amount types has a field called numeric opperator which is either + or - the Credit being a - and the Charge being a + then my stored procedure takes all my + numbers and adds them up and subtracts all the - numbers.
I want to change that so that it actuall be inserted into the table as a - number form the start. So I want choose Misc Credit enter 200.00 and click add then my event says o yea thats a credit insert 200.00 as -200.00
How can I do that?

I have a template field in datagrid. The field shows in insert mode. I do not want to show it because it is a thumbnail to an attachment. The regular bound fields have a setting "Insert Visible" which could be set to false - that is supposed to hide them in insert mode. The template field has no such thing. I have even tried to put Insert Visible = False in to the source but to no avail.
My definition of the template field looks like this:

A TemplateField of a DetailsView can be assigned a value easily at any of many event handlers such as Load, PreRender, etc. when the page is loaded. However, after Insert or Cancel is clicked, all the fields are cleared. I cannot figure out how to assign a value to the field again in code-behind.

View 2 RepliesI'm new to ASP.net 3.5 and trying to create a test site so I can figure out how to use it in the real world. I have created a FormView (Formview1) based on a Client table using Linq Data Sources. The page includes a DropDownList to lookup Clients. I have added a list option (<asp:ListOption value="" Text="(Select Client)" and set AppendDataBoundItems=true so my added option is displayed. I decided to try to use Formview with only the Edit and Insert Modes, and I have set the Default Mode = Insert. When you open the page, a blank Client record is displayed.
The Client record contains serveral lookup fields and they have drop down lists for each. When I select a client from the Client DropDownList, is get the following message 'ddlClientType' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items I had this problem before and decided the best way to handle this (in the interim) was to turn off foreign key constraints for each of the lookup fields (e.g. ClientType) in SQL Server. That worked for 2-3 days. Now the problem has started again.
When I develop in other applications, I would simply create a lookup data source based on a Union Query with the actual data and a blank record. How can you do this using Linq DataSources. Can you get access and modify the queries?
I use GridView & FormView to update a record. but when I click the "save" button, throw an except : FormView must be in the insert mode to insert a record. The record has been updated success, and I didn't change the mode of the FormView, how this error comes?

The GridView provides me with a list of musical artists (from the tblArtists)
In the Grid, I have a field, FKGenreID, that is a Foreign Key value for music Genres.
(An example of the data in that field would be "7", which upon lookup would mean Classical in the
tblGenreList table.)
What I'd like to do is add a DropDownList control that looks up the tblGenreList table and populates the DropDownList with the ID and Description from the tblGenreList Lookup table.
Now the tricky part is that if the GridView field (FKGenreID) has a value, then I'd like the corresponding Genre Description to be displayed in the DropDownList
Alternately, if there is no value for FKGenreID in the GridView, then I'd like the DropDownList to show that nothing was selected, but have the list of Genres available.
Most importantly here, when the user makes a selection, I'd like the GenreID (from the DropDownList) to be entered into the FKGenreID field in the GridView field.
My thought is that a gridview record may or may not have a value in the FKGenreID field. Either way, the DropDownList is bound to that field. The DropDownList would display a list ofGenre Descriptions for the user to select from. Upon selection, the GenreID column of the DropDownList becomes the value in for the FKGenreID field in the GridView.
Is this possible?

I have a DetailsView with several fields. On the same page, I have both LinkButton that enables to go in edit or insert mode for the DetailsView.
When I click on a button, linked code-behind is doing the following :
