Jan 29, 2010I have a page with a gridview control that shows files that have been uploaded to our site. The name of the uploaded files, who uploaded them, and if they have been downloaded, etc are stored in a table. The gridview is bound to the table through a sqlDataSource control. I have a button column in the gridview that downloads the file associated with a row when the button is clicked. All that works well. I have a check box column that shows checked if a file has been downloaded. When the download button is pressed.
the file downloads and then a short routine is run to update the downloaded field in the uploaded files table to set the downloaded field to true. This is done through a command string. All this works. Here is the question. After the update is run I do a databind on the gridview to update it. The databind is run in the PageLoad event is the page is a postback. This does not cause the current row to show downloaded =true (checked). If I refresh the page in the browser then it displays correctly.

Feb 26, 2010I have a page, let's called that Parameter page, displaying data from a database table using GridView. (The database is a SQL database.) I allow editing of data in GridView. The GridView uses stored procedure to retrieve data and to update data. In my project, users need to log in before using my asp.net project. So at every page, I know who the current user is by using HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name. Now as requirement changes, I need to record who has changed what (row) in the Parameter page. The information is to be written to a new table - audit log. Therefore I do not expect to change the Parameter table structure.
I have modified the stored procedure retrieving data. It returns one more column - an empty column with name currentUser. So GridView will create one more column. After data bound, I have the GridView_DataBound() to popluate that column using HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name.
I debug it in Visual Studio and am able to see the name of current log in user as the last column in GridView. I change the update stored procedure to take in one more parameter. That parameter, currentUser, takes default value. The default value is an empty string. So if UI part fails to send in the current user name to stored procedure, it just write the empty string as the user name. I change the <asp:SqlDataSource>. I add a <asp:Parameter> for currentUser.

Jan 14, 2010I would like to ask a question on the visual basic codes to loop the gridview to retrieve the values and based on the values, it will be provided as parameters to update to the database table using stored procedure.
Firstly, I have a gridview named grvProduct. The page (ui) will be loaded with data from the database with the use of stored procedures. And only certain values can be edited through the use of template in gridview. So based on those edited values, I'm supposed to pass these values as parameters to the stored procedure which will then update a database table.
Let say, I have 3 records retrieved from the database and displayed in the gridview. And I would like to edit a values in the 3 records, how do I do batch update and pass those parameters to the stored procedure? I went to debug and step through the visual basic codes and realised there were too many arguments specified because I actually loop the gridview.

with the "Enable Editing" option check and what I want to do is to get the values of areaname and costcenter and assign them to a label control so I can use the values for something else, for example:
ID AreaName CostCenter
1 Multiconector 1025
2 One Conector 2065
3 Plug & Play 1445
4 Splitter 1598
5 FNI 4298
and if I hit the edit button of the row with ID 4, assign the values to the labels lblAreaName = Splitter and lblCostCenter = 1598
Before I edit them, and so on with the rows I want to edit.

Jan 20, 2011I'm new to ASP.net (and coding in general) and I was very impressed about how easy is to learn enough to create something useful :)
Unfortunately, now I'm stuck on a problem involving gridview sorting and paging: I created a master gridview bound to an sqldatasource, I enabled sorting and paging and then I linked it to a detailsview to enable editing and inserting.
In addition, I set up two other gridviews whose datasources depend on the master gridview.
When a user selects a row and modifies it in the detailsview, the sort takes place and the row is often moved to another page. This can be a little confusing, especially because there are other controls relying on the selected row of the master gridview.
There's a way to find and select the page of the selected row after gridview's databind and sort take place? I tried creating a dataview to search the index of the selected datakey in the databound event of my gridview, but it doesn't work, because it seems that the rows aren't sorted yet. Maybe I should choose another event?
