Forms Data Controls :: GridView - Databind To A Collection Within A Custom Datasource?
Jun 14, 2010
I'm trying to databind my GridView to a custom datasource where one of it's members/fields is a collection.
Custom object Entry
public List<EntryHour> Hours { get; set; }
In practical terms, one row consists of some normal text fields which is easy to handle. However, the Hours field is the nut to crack.
How do I, in the GridView markup bind my textfields in question to the Hours field (which consists of 7 items allways)?

In a GridView control ASP.NET
OnRowDataBound="gvTest_OnRowDataBound" followed by
protected void gvTest_OnRowDataBound(....){}
OR
Text='<%# BindMyData(DataBinder.Eval(Container,"DataItem.Price"), DataBinder.Eval(Container,"DataItem.CurrencyID")) %>'
followed by
protected string BindMyData(object price, object currencyID)
{...}
Which one is best in terms of performance and coding best practice?

I have a list of objects that I want to bind to a gridview. Creating that list and binding it works fine for most of the public properties in that list.
There are some objects contained in each of those objects... for instance there is an Address object.
object.Address.Line1;
object.Address.Line2;
When I bind this to my gridview, I have no issues with stuff like object.DateRegistered, but how can I access things like object.Address.WhatEverProperty? I always get this error:
"A field or property with the name 'xxx.xxxx' was not found on the selected data source."

in datalist templatefield, i want to bind an imagebutton's visible property. the scenario is .. it is a picture comments page like one in facebook. if its your own comment, the delete button is shown, otherwise not. the problem is .. for the imagebutton i want to set visible = false, if the user logged in is the same user as the one who commented. how can i do that ?
currently im using this code on datalist databind event. but the label is returned as null
public bool set_visibility()
{
Label lb = DataList3.FindControl("Label7") as Label;
if (lb.Text == Session["user_id"].ToString())
return true;
else
return false;
}
findcontrol dosent return the control.

am having trouble figuring this one out. Am using stored procedure and using databind for the gridview . i got the codes off other sites. I'm guessing its the code that i've underlined, how or what do i use as the datasource for the sorting event. I used the Session for the paging event and that works but not for sorting.

Using VS2005, VB code behind,
I am extending the GridView control to include a custom pager for a custom paging scheme (only one page returned from the database at a time rather than all records). In my testing a discovered an issue - on my last page of data, the GridView's rows property always returns a collection of PageSize page, rather than the actual number of records on the page, with non-data fill records being empty rows.
For example, suppose I have 23 records in my database. Assuming a PageSize of 10, when I page to the last page of data the gridview it properly displays the last 3 recrods - but when I handle the GridView's CommandName="Select" event the GridView's Rows collection contains 10 records, the last seven of which are empty.
I set a break point in just before I call GridView.DataBind and verified that the DataTable used as the DataSource for the last page of data does in fact only contain the 3 expected records. But when I set a breakpoint on the Sub that handles the "Select" GridView command, the GridView.rows collection contains 10 records, the last 7 of which are empty.
This post[URL] and comments make note of the issue but the solution prescribed by the author does not seem to work.
Attached are some snippets of my extended GridView and the two methods from my page where I mentioned setting breakpoints above.

Here is the situation I have, I have a repeater inside a Usercontrol. The datasource is a IEnumerable<Investor> Exposed through a UserControl's Property. I have overridden the UserControl's databind event to set the Repeater Datasource before databinding the repeater. When it's not a postback, it databinds find and the events on the repeater item's controls fires up fine. But there is one event on repeater items (Delete Investor) which call back the DataBind of the UserControl after removing the Investor from de datasource. When this Event is called, it does all the work (deleting the investor and so on...) calls back the usercontrol's databind but when (within the usercontrol databind) the repeater is databinded again, the repeater items doesn't update (repeater items for investor not on the DataSource anymore still appears). My ItemDataBind doesn't even fire by then.

I Tried with both the Repeater Item Command and each LinkButton Event to see if it would make any difference, but none worked

I got 2 listboxes in a window form, one on left and one on right. The 1st listbox have some items while the 2nd listbox is empty. Also there are 2 buttons between the 2 listboxes which used to move item from/to the 1st and 2nd listbox.My problem here is that after I bind the data to the 1st listbox (from a dataTable, using DisplayMember and ValueMember) , and I try to move 1 of the item from this 1st listbox to the 2nd listbox and I want that the selected item is also removed from the 1st listbox by:
lbMembers2.Items. Add(lbMembers1. Text);
lbMembers1.Items. Remove(lbMembers 1.Text);
But the selected item is not removed from the 1st listbox.Also on deselect button when i move item from 2nd listbox to 1st listbox,it displays error message "Items collection cannot be modified when the DataSource property is set."

I'm working on a project where I have to create a page that displays the "health" of a system. I run a query and display the results in a gridview with a red or green icon next to it. This works fine when the page is first loaded. My problem is that I have a thread that runs a query every 30 minutes and rebinds the gridview but the gridview never refreshes even though the data has changed. How do I get the gridview to display the new results? The databound event never fires a second time even though I can clearly see that I have received new data. I assume I am missing something simple but I just don't know what. What am I doing wrong?

So I have a GridView and several events that can be triggered (such as filtering and inserting a new record) to manipulate the GridView. I want to make sure that I'm not calling DataBind on Page_Load, especially since I might have to call it again when certain events fire. Is there a way I can make it so I only have to call DataBind once on the GridView after Page_Load and anything else has fired? Like some event that will absolutely fire last where I can put my DataBind?
The reason I need to do this is because the DataSource for the GridView is set programmatically from a DataView when the page is loaded, so DataBind needs to run every time. Just, hopefully, not multiple times each time...

I have a gridview positioning issue that may have been answered elsewhere, but I couldn't seem to find a similar post...
I have a webforms app containing a paged gridview (e.g., 200 records - 50 rows and 4 pages).
When the user clicks on a button in a specific row, another web page is launched to process that button click. When the user closes that page to return to the main gridview, the databind event is rerun and the page redisplays the gridview starting at the top. However, I want to have the previous position maintained (like an html bookmark), so that the grid will automatically be scrolled to the the previously clicked gridview page and item.
Setting attributes such as "MaintainScrollPositionOnPostback" do nothing in this case.

i'm opening a new window and passing on to it variables in a querystring, the values are loaded into a function that is filling my dataset and then filling my Gridview. after i press the button field in my grid to delete an item, the databind doesn't show the updated grid but remains the same. i've noticed that if i navigate back and refresh i see it correctly. in FF btw no problem.

I am have a page with a couple of dropdowns which serve as criteria for a select SPROC. Once a selection is made in a drop down a panel is shown which contains gridview whose rows have been returned by the select SPROC.If you close the panel and change the drop down selection and then redsplay your panel the data from your prior selection is still displayed in the gridview,
unless you page to the next group of records.

I have spent most of my time writing ASP.Net web pages, using VS 2005. I am now developing some client function for Windows, so I'm relatively less expert in VB.In my Windows program I have defined a DataGridView and linked this to a data table (within a tableadaptor). Now I want to populate it: on a web page's code-behind I would write Gridview.databind(). What is the equivalent with a DataGridView.

I have a drop down menu that is populated on page load. Below that, I have a gridview that has a select parameter based on that drop down menu's value. I can't get the gridview to populate with data based on the drop down. If I fill in the parameter with a constant, the data pulls fine, but when I switch the parameter to a form parameter, it won't pull.
Here is the relevant piece of the aspx page:
