is it possible to have a button defined outside a grid view and give it a command name of "select" and somehow attach it to the gridview, so the grid recieves a select command when clicked without writing code?

I want to access the cell values in the GridView from the Click event handler of the Button.
I have a grid with three columns, two of which contain drop-downs, all of them getting filled from a web service result set. Now I want to allow the functionality of adding a new record in the grid by clicking an Add button present outside the gridview.
Whenever the user clicks the Add button, a new record should be created in the grid with value list filled in the drop-downs with the available options.
What is the best possible way to achieve this considering extensibility in mind.
I have a Listview that is connected to an EntityDataSource. What I'm having trouble doing is showing fields of an association in the Item Template rather than just the id.
For example, what it currently shows:
Name: John Doe
Race: 3
What I wish it would show
Name: John Doe
Race: Caucasian

Obviously, I'm getting the number because Race_ID is an integer. What I'm less sure about is how to bind it or Eval it in some manner that will let me match that id to a name in the other table (which is associated). I've tried <%# Eval("Race.Name") %>' and a few other things to try to get a name rather than an ID but I always get either the id or nothing at all.
Here is what I need to to. I have a gridview which I have a column that has a link to a pdf file on our file server. When I click the link I need to go into a database and update a column that they clicked the link then I need to open the file. by usinga HyperLinkField I am able to put in the link that I want to go to and when the page is running I can click on the link and it goes to the page and everything works fine except for being able to update the database part.

I tried using a ButtonField where in the code behind in the GridView1_RowCommand I pull out the file path and put it into a response write statement the problem I'm having with it is that when it opens the file it removes all the ""s so I get the error file cannot be found.
I'm customizing a NopCommerce store, and am using a gridview to display and sort the products. All that works well. I like how the external pager (user control) works with the gridview, with one exception -- it uses the hyperlink control, so I lost viewstate, which I need to retain for both the search page and to retain the gridview sort options. Based on the page selected (from the pager control), I query the database and rebind the gridview. So, I switched the user control to use LinkButtons instead of Hyperlinks. I set a breakpoint inside the lbCommandClick method, but it never gets hit. Reading other posts tells me that I would have to add the dynamic controls in the OnLoad method, but since this all happens based on other data on the page (say search results), I don't think I can do it onLoad. However, the link buttons do work to cause a postback, and my viewstate is saved correctly. The only problem is that I do not know which button was clicked. I could check Request.Params["__EVENTTARGET"] onLoad, but that is kind of a hack -- I'd much rather be able to set the event handler in the user control and use the CommandArgument property. But, what I have tried so far fails.
Especially one that would allow me to set the EventHandler in the User Control? (e.g. OnlbCommand="PagerLBPageChange" )

I have a databound Gridview (with a LINQ datasource). The gridview displays questions from the SQL DB to the user. I've inserted a radio button list into the gridview with 3 horizontal radio buttons with fixed values of 1,2,3 for the user to select. I have a question ID, a tempuserID, and AnswerValue columns set up in the database. It all works nicely.
After the user selects radio buttons, I would like for them to push a button to submit the QuestionID, the associated Radio Button Value (AnswerValue) and their tempUserID into the DB. How do I do this? I'm not sure what to do next and what VB/LINQ code to put in the code behind file in the button click event handler. I'm also not sure on what to use for the tempUserID, can I use the sessionID? I'm using VB and here's my code:

I have a page with 2 update panels
UpdatePanel1 contains a gridview1 and a standard panel, pnlForms. gridview1 has a linkbutton which is processed in the gridview1_rowcommand
UpdatePanel2 has gridview2.
There is also a Submit button that isn't in either UpdatePanel but may be a candidate to go into its own UpdatePanel. The Submit button is a trigger for both update panels
The behavior I would like is:
1-Initially, all visible except pnlForms and Submit button 2- When linkbutton in UpdatePanel1 gridview1 is clicked, pnlForms and Submit button become visible. 3. When Submit button is clicked, both gridviews should be refreshed, and PnlForms and the Submit button should both become not visible. I believe I may have to put the Submit button in its own UpdatePanel3 but am not sure how to proceed.
In my present code, everything works as desired except Submit button (not presently in any Update panel) is always visible. Assuming Submit button is initialized to not visible, how do I get it to appear when I click the link button in gridview1 and to disappear when it is clicked?
We need assistance with a portion of a major web application project scheduled to begin user testing within 10 days. The troublesome part of the code calls an external application when a button is clicked in Web page. When run from a command prompt or bat file, the external application, App.exe, runs perfectly producing the desired result. We created a test page and a small console application, Con.exe, to test the button code with a known quantity. The test application runs perfectly when the button in the Web page is clicked. However when we change the code to run App.exe instead of Con.exe, the App.exe code will not execute. We even tried creating a bat file to execute App.exe. Like the exe, the bat file executes from the command prompt or when double-clicked,but fails to run when called as a process from the button click event. Can anyone assist us? I am not looking to work with a Sqldatasource as I use a data access layer. So the sort would have to be from a datatable and databind or directly with the gridview.

problem is: When any last row is left in Gridview, its Delete button is disables that time (as per requirement and functionality). But when user clicks on Gridview "Edit" button, update section opens, and at that time "Delete" button gets Enabled, so that time user can delete the last row of Gridview which should not be done.I had fixed this problem for "Cancel" and "Update" button of Gridview using below line:

View 1 RepliesI have a gridview that does a select statement against a sql database, there is not editing, inserting or deleting just the select statement. What I want to do is have the data in the gridview refresh upon either hitting the back button or the forward button.
If the back button is pressed it should give me yesterdays data from the table. If I hit the forward button it should give me tomorrows data, at the same time i want the forward button to be limited to going forward only 5 days from todays date.
I figure that I have to do this in a Updatepanel however I am unsure as to how to do this.

Is there a way that I can pass the non databound item to the postBackUrl query string.
I don't want to use the built in "Select" hyperlink that's in the gridview, I'd like to just use the first data column, is there a way to do that or are we forced to use the automatically generated "Select" column.

Now I want to change this paging facility and would like to show a "more" button at the footer(just like [URL] has). The moment user clicks it, the next set of data will be retreived. This will go on till all the records are fetched.
I have a gridview with 20 records and I have scroll bar to scroll down to view the records.I m displaying respective row data when click on the select button in grid view. The problem is whenever I select the
row, the gridview refreshes and scroll bar is going up. Ofcourse it is displaying correct data. but the gridview refreshes and scroll bar goes up.I want the selected row to be shown when I select that row.
What i would liek to do is add a new image to my image button if a cell in the gird has the word no, I want to change the image button to somehting else and add a tooltip to it. Heres what i have but I get a blue underline under button and the tooltip does not seem to work.

I got a function to load a grid view and works fine. Then, I got a button, when click, I wanted to add a new row into the grid, what I did is I add a new to to the dataset and rebind the dataset to the grid view.
The problem I faced is that is it able to add a new row, but it only shows ONE column only, which is the most left column.
